Awakening

Rate this book
Elizabeth is a brilliant loner with a troubling secret she doesn't even know. As if the trauma of her mother being abducted before her eyes as a young girl wasn't enough, the small town she lives in thinks she’s crazy. That all changed when she met Michael, a mysterious and handsome man who identified with her like no one else before.

Michael’s long time friend Vincent visits and drops the bombshell of a lifetime on Elizabeth and her world becomes completely unraveled. Vincent’s information has revealed the world for what it is; a place where the impossible is real, and myths and legends walk slyly in shadow. A world that Elizabeth will learn she too is a member.

Now, the three are caught up in a thousand year long conspiracy they never could have imagined. The three must rely on one another and the secret connection they all share if they have a chance to survive.

If you like books like The Vampire Diaries or the Southern Vampire Mysteries, you will love this. It's an exciting and intelligent take on paranormal that leaves you anxious for the next book in the series

Painful

I liked the way it started, but the dialogue got more and more inane as the book went on. The plot seemed to be planned so that you would read the next book. However, I do not like any of the characters well enough to read the next book.

"The first and most important thing: forget everything you've heard or read. Forget everything you thought you knew."

Wow, what is that? The beginning lines they forced you to start with in your creative writing class? But I'm going to go with this, by first forgetting the opening lines to this book and giving it a fighting chance.

First, the dialogue: Moments of, dare I say, exceptional talent, intertwined with areas that could certainly use some tightening up. Still, it shows promise. I keep reading.

The author displays total command of first-person narrative voice, none of that "yo-ismo" which is a term I learned in Spanish class about a millennium ago. It means the text isn't burdened down with "I's" and, to give the author his due, it's not even heavy on the "me's". What the author doesn't display is mastery of the thesaurus. The overall vocabulary seems limited; I wasn't sure if this was supposed to be Young Adult Fiction or not, but it definitely reads at about the eighth grade level. That's okay, because I like YA Fiction, at least, until we start coming across little gems like this one found at the beginning of Chapter Two:

"He's funny and charming...and as much as I really hate to admit it, he's a pretty smart guy. I don't know him well enough to admit it..." *shudder*

So far, it sounds like a decent book. So why did I downgrade it to nothing? Because this author has NO SENSE OF CONFLICT. Our heroes are pretty much the two most powerful creatures on earth, stomping around and kicking butt then entire time. Oh look, you have super speed, super strength, telepathic abilities, mind control, impervious skin, and you're immortal. Everything always goes according to plan, and no one double crosses anyone, or could, because everyone's too smart for that. I felt like I was watching someone play a video game after they'd turned on cheat mode.

Sure, you've got a Twilight-style love triangle, which is sure to have the fan-fic crowd slobbering on your shoes, but did you have to set it up in such a way that not a single person is jealous of anyone else? The girl likes both guys, they're friends with each other, and both pretty much agree that whoever gets the girl, it's okay by the other one, "hey, we'll still be buds forever!" There wasn't even a paragraph of angst when they asked mom if it was okay to kill her evil son. Of course mom is going to agree, because, you know, her son is bad. What?

Who wants to read a book in where your protagonist has the obvious advantage in all ways against a lesser force, and then wins? What's next, hero slays fencepost? I wasn't even tempted by book two, and I'm the queen of OCD completionism. In fact, I had to force myself to finish book one, because I knew what the ending was halfway through, the heroes had already planned it out and told us. And, as I expected, everything went just like clockwork.

This was a great book.. Truly addicting. I like that OL keeps all the supernaturals that we know and love but also introduces us to something new. A keeper is a new supernatural species to me along with other surprise's that OL adds in the book.

Izzy has been trying to find out what took her mother and everyone thinks that she is crazy. Her father is no help since he has become a drunk. She has to see shrink after shrink since everyone thinks that she is crazy. Then she meets Michael.

Michael is the first boy that she has ever been attracted to. They eventually start to become close and she tells him about her mother and he is the first person to believe her and not think that she is crazy. Then she meets Vincent.

Vincent is rude and sarcastic and Izzy can't seem to figure out why she likes him. Along with meeting Vincent comes the truth. Michael has been keeping secrets and Vincent is all to willing to tell what those are. Michael is a Werewolf, Vincent is a Vampire and Izzy is a Keeper. Along with these truths comes the fact that Izzy is in danger.

They need to find out what danger and put a stop to it. Come to find out the danger is a lot bigger than they thought.

I highly recommend this book and I'm getting ready to start book two myself. I can't wait to read it and find out what else OL has in store for us!

What a bombshell of a book! This is one paranormal read that left me saying witches, vampires and werewolves... oh my! The Keepers Awakening is not your run of the mill paranormal romance it has kicked it up a notch or two. Lizzy is not your normal average girl she's seen things that make her question her own sanity including the abduction of her mother right before her eyes yet she has no clue as to what or who took her it's all just a blur. Michael enters Lizzy's life and he is a total gentleman that makes Lizzy's heart beat a little faster. The mystery behind this handsome man that can connect with her like no other will leave her on her toes trying to figure out his secret. Vincent drops in unannounced bringing with him a whole whirlwind of information that leaves Lizzy's head spinning all the while releasing a world where the impossible is real. Between the three of them they take us on a paranormal journey like no other I have ever read and I loved it! I want more of The Keepers Series and can't wait to see what author O.L. Ramos has in store for us next! This story pack one heck of a spiced up punch with just a touch of true romantic elements that totally make it a "keeper".

I was given this book in place of an honest review.

I will start by saying that if you read this book have an open mind and be ready to hear a bunch of stuff that you have never heard of before. All the technical stuff in this book just blew my mind. I also had to pick which guy I liked best, I mean you don't have to but I picked mine. I will tell you that this is a book about supernaturals and living in a world that we are just barley living in each day.

This book is mainly about a keeper, werewolf, and vampire. I am going against everything I usually pick because vampires are my favorite but this time I am going with Michael the werewolf. There is just something about him that I just can't let go of. I know that Liz has to decide which one she will pick and she feels something different for each one.

This book was more than an adventure. There were so many things going on that I stayed excited all the way until the end. The author made sure that I would want to read the next book by the ending in this one. Now I will be going crazy wondering when the next book comes out and what other mysteries I will find out. I am still asking myself questions and I want answers. I can't go and have something not finished.

So read this book and join me on my wait and I will have someone else to go crazy with.

Awakening by O.L. Ramos is genius. Werewolves, vampires, witches, slayers and so much more. And they all need The Keeper! I was so enthralled with this book. I never put it down. The characters are as deep and fascinating as you would expect for one who has lived for centuries. There are no holes in the plot or inconsistencies in the characters. I cannot wait for the saga to continue! This book was an experience!

A book that gets your heart beating, takes your breath away. It drags you into the paranormal world and surrounds you with your own fantasies. You want to just keep reading and not put the book down because if you do it warps you back into the reality of our own real world. This author has was it takes to put you into your own world when reading.

O gods, I couldn't get past the first few pages of dialogue, dialogue!? That's cutting it close. Liz is annoying, obtuse and hearing her thoughts is painful and inane. "Oh no I think he can read me like a book" thankfully we can judge this book by its first few pages, open and shut it quick.

The Keeper: Awakening (The Keeper Series) O.L. Ramos

I received an ARC in exchange for honest review.

I was contacted by the author and asked to review this book. As usual I looked and read the Amazon sample and decided it was something I'd like to read. Its a very good début book from Mr Ramos and I'd love to read next in the series – hope you don't keep us waiting too long!

It begins with Elizabeth (Liz, Izzy) talking to her therapist about her background. Liz saw her mum taken by something – right in front of her in their kitchen but the action was so fast its a blur. Of course no-one believes her and she gained the reputation of being “odd” and she's become a slightly prickly, defensive character. I found her difficult to like at first, she seemed almost aggressive to people. When she first meets Michael (and Vincent later) in the café where she works she's fairly rude to him and if I'd been him I'd have walked out. Still he knows more about her than we do, or than she does herself. The story reveals slowly that there is a supernatural element alive and kicking in the human world and Liz becomes part of it along with Michael and Vincent. There are plots and battles and its a book with a lot of action in. Its not a book to be bored with :) though I felt a little less action and a little more description would have been better. There was a lot of working up to each action scene, but it was over too quickly and I feel it could have been drawn out longer to make it the bigger part of the book it deserved. Still, better than those with pages and pages of dull action, as some books do just to fill pages.
The story line was believable, although of course fantasy means suspending belief to a degree there needs to be some form of realism, and I’m always sceptical when the main character such as Liz developers special powers right in the middle of a crisis. Thankfully Liz doesn't and in fact often says how she feels the weak link having nothing special to fight with. I felt it easier to relate to her for that and it made a great change from the novels where the characters are in a battle and the newbie heroine gains powers to save the day ahead of those supernatural who are hundreds, even thousands of years old. I really struggle with that concept.
There's a scene at the beginning where she is chatting with Michael about the supernatural world and the possibility of it being real, and Michael says how in history even though there was no contact between people in different countries they've come up with very similar otherworldly creatures – its something that's crossed my mind many times too ;)
I liked both Michael and Vincent – more so as time went on and we learned more about them. I like the way they are very different characters with Michael being the planner and Mr responsibility, and Vincent being the fly by the seat of your pants person....Liz was attracted to them both and I can see why – she has a hard decision ahead of her though I think I can see which one its going to be :) but I need next book to tell if I’m right.
On the subject of next book – I have a dire horror of cliffhangers – I love series but the recent trend for trilogies with cliffhanger endings leaves me cold and puts me off buying the book as its often months, even a year before we readers learn more by which time the impact has lessened. Mr Ramos doesn't fall into that trap thankfully! The next book is clearly a continuation of this one but though there are lead ins as to what will happen this book of course, the ending to this one is tied up neatly as I'd expect and much in line with conventional series novels – a big Hurrah for that! Hopefully more authors will take note – I know from emails and comments that I’m not alone in HATING cliffhangers, so an end to them will be well supported by many of us.
Overall a really excellent first novel and I'd love to read next part. Its excellent value for money at just £2.01 for 282 pages, I have a kind of arbitrary 1.5p per page guideline on the VFM front, and this falls well into that especially as its one to join the keeper files for re reading.
Stars: brilliant start -there is room for improvement as with many first novels but I'm giving it a solid four stars.

I absolutely loved this book....getting to know Lizzy, Michael and Vincent was a blast. I understood Lizzy, and could relate to being a loner and feeling like I didn't belong. I love how when she met Michael and trusted him with her story, that he handled her compassionately and gently and didn't make her feel alone anymore.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like Vincent, to tell you the truth. His immaturity and constant sarcasm truly got on my nerves at first. By the end of the story, I was smitten. Altho I could have done without some of the snark, it truly made Vincent's character stand out.

I do have to say tho that I wasn't sure about the LOOOOOOONG conversations, but you really have to pay attention! I caught myself starting to skip thru some of it, but made myself go back and read it as there were things that I missed! I have to say that I loved OL's twist on things, and the way he made me look into his world. GREAT FIRST BOOK!!!

I received a copy of this book as a ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review this is my review an my opinion.
O.L. Ramos has written two books so far in this series of the :Keeperone is the The Keeper Awaking , and the other is the The Keeper Revenge. Both of these books are excellent works. I highly recommend them to everyone. When I first picked up the the Awaking an started reading the book. I could not put the book down until I had finished reading it 3 hours later. For me , that was a none stop read; which I do when I can't put a book down. If a book has over 500 pages or more than I pull an all niter.
At any rate, let me tell you about this book a little- you have a young college student by the name of
Elizabeth ( who goes by the name of Liz) her mother Mary was suddenly snatched from her at a very young age in their kitchen ( which she saw and no one believes her)Her father is trying very hard to raise his daughter without his loving wife who he loved very much and now with out her is causing him to drink all the time. Liz works at the family restaurant for her uncle as waitress. It is there she meets the handsome hunk Micheal ( who is a werewolf) and Vinnie ( who happens to be a vampire) -see they came to protect Liz because she happens to be a Keeper.
This book has it all witches, vampires, water sprites, werewolf's, slayers, and more. I am not going to tell you anymore about this book as I don't want to spoil it for you. However- I will say this it is a must read for all!!!

LOVED it and already bought the rest in the series that's out!

Loved the spin of the 'Keeper' in this book along with the usual Vamps and Were's and 'Others'. It kept me turning the pages to see what Lizzy was getting into next and what Michael and Vincent would do to catch her attention and what they would do to keep her safe. This was a well written, thought out book. I really liked Vincent and his blunt sarcastic comments, he made me LOL alot. I didn't know who to root for, him or Michael, and still don't!! :) As soon as I finished reading this book I was already looking for the next in the series and then purchased them all so I can continue the Saga. There are a couple spots that you really feel a YA vibe from, cause LIzzy is only 19 and she acts it, BUT you won't be disappointed with this read.

Wasn't sure what to expect but pleasantly surprised. Fast paced reading.. dives into Elizabeth who at first glance you may think she's a bit nuts. Stories of her mothers disappearance right in front of her lands her with a dad who dives into alcohol to forget. Elisabeth is brilliant well above her age level and almost has a masters. While in the diner she works at things begin to unravel...a mysterious man who she's drawn too enters her life and she unfolds and bears all and he doesn't run... first hint. Another gent Vincent enters handsome in his own right yet even more mysterious then Michael... till Michael is forced to divulge. I was hooked from start to finish!

What an incredible read. After reading many Paranormal books, sometimes the genre can get stale. Mr. Ramos has refreshed and added to! The characters are very specific and relatable,Vincent is my favorite. The story is packed with great fight scenes. The plot has some very interesting twists and turns and kept involved and interested the entire time. Also, Mr. Ramos has added a NEW paranormal Species that I, for one, have never heard of. The book is well written and flows easily.

I am a huge new fan and will be definitely buying the next one.

Holy smokes this book was amazing!! At first I was thinking maybe Michael was the vamps but as soon as I learned about the notorious Vincent I knew exactly what he was. Werewolf or not Michael is a gentle kind soul keeping watch over the balance between humanity and supers. This book explodes into conspiracy between supers and secrets are revealed. The cliff hanger at the end ensures interest and determination to dive right into the second book The Keeper: Revenge, which I am about to do :)
