Sergeant Stubby is a devoted stub-tailed Bull Terrier, who gives his loyalty to Robert Conroy. When Conroy is shipped into service during World War I, Stubby goes along. The short version is that Stubby is "smuggled to France...wounded in battle...returned victorious...met three Presidents...decorated by Pershing...honored and loved."

Much of the war stories in the book are only a generic telling of events that occurred to the 26th Yankee Division. There are no letters to or from the Conroy home describing actual events about Robert and Stubby. The bulk of the story is written from a scrapbook that Robert kept about Stubby, newspaper stories, and the memories of extended family members.

This book gives a vivid memorial to, not only Stubby, but the many other animals who served with bravery and devotion during WWI.

This little chap worked alongside soldiers in the trenches, a place he did not choose to be in as were so many animals. Nonetheless, he was treated like the hero he was and saved many lives. His presence brought hope and comfort to the soldiers whose lives he touched. This was a difficult read for me as my strong opinion is that it is unforgivable to use animals in war, they give unconditionally and often die as a result. This book pays tribute to such a brave little soul, but it also serves to reminds us that so many unsung hero's like him died, and still die, as a result of our need for which there can be no justification, we simply assume we are the important species on the planet!

Great Story

Another example of how important and special a dog can be. Always there to give support and comfort when we needed it most and expect nothing more than a pat on the head.

A hero

This is a wonderful true story about the best between dogs and humans. If only all dogs had such wonderful friends and were valued as Stunt was.

Informative easy read

Worthwhile story that many have no idea ever happened. Be sure to read all about Stubby and his heroic actions that go beyond a normal canine. He was truly amazing.
