Alfa Mail

Rate this book
Alfa Mail is based on 20 open ‘Letters from a part-time petrolhead’, written over a period of three years,
Alfa Mail takes a deeply personal look at the Alfa Romeo marque, plus other cars - good, bad and appalling - and a variety of aircra, motorcycles, tractors, places and people.
Some of the less controversial content originally appeared in the award-winning magazine,
Alfa Romeo Driver; indeed, its readers prompted the decision to develop the theme.
With approximately 63,000 words and well over 100 illustrations, the tone ranges from fact-packed to conversational, from deeply concerned to unashamedly prejudiced.
History includes the true starting date of what was then ALFA and recalls the day Alfa
Romeo humbled the Nazis.
Anecdote links TVR with Spike Milligan.
Heroes range from Stirling Moss to Italian partisan fighters.
Solid data includes Morris Marina survival statistics.
Pictures reject pristine studio shots, in favour of spontaneity: views of real life vehicles and
events. Many of the unique action/news pictures are snapshots - taken everywhere from
Brooklands to Bombay.
Alfa Mail is a car book for people who also love life.

About the author

Born just after World War 2, I grew up in the Dorset countryside among cars and planes, motobikes and tractors, guns and horses.
From early childhood, I recognised their aesthetic, emotional and social significance
When I left a local public (i.e. private) school at 16, I spent my Old Boys membership fee on a well-used Tiger 110 motorcycle: 99% as fast as a Bonneville, with about 45% of the stabilitity. Way to go.
Since then, I’ve serviced electric milk floats, worked in scrapyards and on farms , rebuilt a supercharged 1934 AC, a 1930 Riley 9 and studied Architecture.
1n 1970, I joined a famous London advertising agency as a copywriter. Still love the work. Have won several awards as a freelance copywriter, creative director and journalist.
Apart from Alfa Mail, my other writing includes journalism, for publications such as Alfa Romeo Driver, poetry (Commended by The Thomas Hardy Society) and limited-edition art books, such as Relatively Virginal.
