If I could give higher then 5 stars I would. As an avid reader I've read it all from mystery to suspense to romance and Amish in between but this set of books left me eager to turn the pages awaiting the next turn of events. I cheered and cried with all the ladies. It almost felt as if they were real and I knew each one personally. For me to feel this way is the highest compliment I can give the author.
Excellent book. All three novels in this trilogy grasped your attention with a plot line to lure anyone in. A wonderful illustration of old west Christian romance, suspense, and peppered with enough humor to keep things light. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a wide variety of emotional turns and a happy ending.
Kelly Eileen Hake writes this triolgy, "Husbands for Hire".
I loved reading these stories. First was Rugged and Restless about a logger Jacob Granger who is looking for his brothers murderer and as his cover he courts the lovely Evelyn Thompson. The women come to Hope falls after a mining accident and they choose to save the town by starting a sawmill, of course they will need men to get it started and to work it so one Lacy Lyman who is sister to mine owner whom they had thought dead after a mine explosion comes up with idea to write an ad to hire husbands like men do to get mail-order brides. you are going to love reading these stories as each finds her man....
Tall Dark and Determined is when Chase Dunstan returns to town and meets the feisty Lacy Lyman...sparks fly. Chase had been hunter and guide when the mine had began earlier and now was looking for answers to the explosion that killed many.
Strong and Stubborn is the story of a carpenter, Michael Strode who has a son that in laws wants to raise after the mother dies so he is looking to hide away in a remote place and raise his son without interference. Michael meets Naomi Higgins and they have much in common, when he learns the women are looking for husbands he likes what he sees and knows she would make a good mother for his son along with wonderful wife to him.
Another of the women Cora had been finance to mine owner Braden before the accident and she yearns to have the relationship they once had, throughout all three stories he is a bear after the mine explosion when he is hurt badly and must heal with much pain. He wants to free Cora from their engagement but she is having nothing to do with it and works at helping him adjust and come back to a real life again even if it is slowly.
Like all Kelly Eileen Hake's books, she deals with issues in a down-to-earth yet humorous way. I enjoy her books and this one certainly didn't disappoint. Adventure, romance and threading through it, learning to love and respect your fellow men (or women!). The whole 'Husbands for Hire' was an interesting concept, a kind of reverse mail-order bride scenario. Of course, it created many difficult, and funny situations. Behind the main story line of 4 women choosing husbands, there is also a more serious and intriguing plot to be uncovered. The ending was quite a surprise, but I think that makes the story all the more entertaining.
I read the 1st 2 books in the series but the 3rd book didn't really keep my interest. I liked the storyline, characters and the humor. But some of the scenes were repeated almost word for word, kind of like a refresher. I felt it was unnecessary and would have preferred the story to seamlessly keep going instead of feeling like I was going backwards and rereading.
I was looking forward to this one, but it honestly has me so confused I'm not sure if I'll end up finishing. It has some editing issues as well. Disappointing.
