Obsession is a perfect name for this romantic suspense with a touch of the paranormal because it reflects character motivations, drives the plot, and emphasizes the overall theme of how our own obsessions have the power to stain our souls and destroy the lives of others.

There are numerous literary aspects of this book that I found enjoyable and well-executed. I chose to read this book because of its unique storyline that integrates the corruption of religious cults and drug cartels in the overall quest of one woman to rescue her kidnapped son. Throughout the book, Buchbinder describes how a position of leadership can lead to manipulation and disregard for others. She gives a glimpse of cult mentality that blends in nicely with the plot. She also provides a look at the overall greed and selfishness of a fictitious Mexican drug cartel’s desire for power and dominance. Here, the cult leader and drug lord both use human trafficking for their own gain. Buchbinder also provides a list of sources for her research in case readers want to learn more, which is helpful.

I love and admire Angie Edmonds, the heroine of the story. She grew up with a delusional father who leads a religious cult that gives him the freedom to abuse her and other members as well. However, when she is introduced after the prologue, we see a strong, confident, and resourceful woman who is determined to find her son, Jake . Her father has escaped prison and taken Jake because he thinks Jake is “the chosen one” with the power to heal others. I like that Angie isn’t a passive protagonist who plays the role of a victim and sits back to let others take over a rescue attempt.

Angie has experienced devastating abuse and trauma that may have broken others. Even though she isn’t perfect and she’s made some mistakes, Angie has been emotionally strong enough to break away from the constraints and abuse forced upon her by her parents and, she has overcome her drug addiction to become a successful defense attorney.

By getting her backstory which is described over the course of the novel, I was able to understand her fears of having her son in the hands of a madman. When she sees the futile efforts of the FBI to rescue Jake who is being held in Mexico, she takes the initiative in forming a plan for rescue no matter what it takes, even working with a ruthless drug lord in her quest.

After being betrayed by parents who are supposed to love and protect her, Angie has learned to rely only on herself and she’s taken defensive steps to ensure her safety. She has been trained in martial arts and knows how use a gun when necessary. Now she is forced to put her skills to use as she becomes immersed in a world where trust and loyalty are constantly in question. Her success depends upon whether she can learn to put her faith in others. Having Alejandro at her side and guidance from an angel give her the support she needs.

Overall, Buchbinder has created a well-rounded three dimensional character whose personality and actions are realistic. Angie doesn’t always make the best decisions and this creates more complications and reveals her strengths and vulnerabilities . However, I did find it hard to believe she has 3 NDEs in such a short amount of time.

Alejandro is the hero of this story, and I the author’s physical representation of him in the book trailer is exactly how I pictured him. Alejandro is working undercover for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATFE) to expose the illegal activities of drug lord Isabel Rameriz. Yet, Alenjandro also has a personal interest in this job as well and getting revenge is one of his goals. I wish there was more development with his character so I could get the full story behind his emotional wounds.

I can see why Angie and Alejandro are drawn to each other. Both are in emotional pain and seek revenge against the ones who hurt them. Their obsessions play a major role in driving the plot. Both characters have to come to terms with their pasts before they can have a real relationship. Although I didn’t pick up a sizzling passion between them, their growing affection and love for each other is definitely shown.

There are several antagonists in the book who use people for their own benefit and are motivated by greed and power. Angie’s parents Zeke and Miriam are two clear antagonists. They are two-dimensional characters without virtue who elicit no sympathy from me. Also, I found a few instances in the book where their actions seemed exaggerated and unrealistic.
Although I get an idea of why Miriam blindly follows her husband, I needed more details to help me understand Zeke’s behavior. In contrast, several other characters’ have questionable motives, and this kept my interest in what happens next.

This story is full of action and suspense right from the start, but there are a couple of events that seem a bit too convenient and contrived to unify the story, and I was also disappointed with the easy resolution of Alejandro’s conflict in seeking revenge. The last part of the book seems rushed, but I was glad an epilogue is included that provides resolution and lets readers know about the future direction of other significant characters. The conclusion is too abrupt for my satisfaction; I still wanted to know more about Jake’s abilities and what the future holds for him. Yet, I’m sure others may believe the conclusion wraps up the story very well.

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

Angie's father didn't care if she lived or died, only that the Chosen One should be born. Her labor was difficult and she thought she would die from it, or her father would butcher her to save the child.

She was ready to go with the angel, but the angel turned away and she was sucked back into her body.

Angie's father had been imprisoned after he was arrested for kidnapping her newborn son, Jake. No one could have foreseen that he would escape from prison and kidnap her son again. This time, he moved the cult to the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico, far away from any form of civilization.

She was frantic. She must get her son away from her father and the cult. She had always known that she was on her own and she was not going to let anything stand in the way of getting her child back.

The FBI could do nothing. They were so busy with the Mexican drug wars, they had no time for the kidnapping of a child.

She called in every favor she was owed. She would be working with the top drug kingpin in Mexico, who sent Alejandro Torres to meet her.

Would he be her savior or her downfall?

5 STARS - Would Buy It For Them (lol)

I thought this would be a great book just from the book blurb, but it far surpassed my expectations very early in the book. I thought a child being kidnapped, the Mexican cartel, a cult along the lines of Jimmy Jones and a sexy undercover operative - Awesome. Then she adds some other elements I didn't see coming and WOW. It blew me away.

Her writing is excellent and the story has so many layers that it kept my mind racing as I tried to figure out what would happen. I have this insatiable need to try and figure out the ending before I get there. LOL

Good and evil. The age old story. Angie's father believed he was Satan in human form, she was Jezebel and her child was the Messiah.. Her father wanted to raise Jake to rule the world.

I was pissed off from the getgo. A scenario such as this is why I believe in the death penalty. Some people are so evil, I believe they shouldn't be walking the earth and breathing the air.

Some fantastic quotes:

"Tried to keep her eyes off his crotch." "

"She pretended he had a giant python in his pants."

"Please put on some freaking clothes and cover up that snake."

"Womb with no view."

"The man was without a doubt a humongous danger to anyone with a vagina."

Priceless. Amongst all the badness a laugh emerges.

I received this book for an honest and unbiased review in conjunction with the tour.

If you prefer your romance steamy, served with a heaping helping of danger, you will love Obsession, which promises to be author Sharon Buchbinder's breakout novel.

Single mother Angie Edmonds fears the worst when her infant son is kidnapped by her father, a psychopathic cult leader. She has battled her own demons--drugs and alcohol--and overcome them to become a successful defense attorney and mother, but when her father eludes the authorities and escapes to Mexico, Angie teams up with a drug cartel to find her child.

While searching for her father's hideout, Angie partners with sexy, hard-bodied Alejandro Torres, who serves as the drug cartel's "accountant." He's on the wrong side of the law, and although she resists, Angie is immediately drawn to him. As they work together to plan her son's rescue, the sexual tension builds--and it's delicious!

During the harrowing rescue attempt, their passion flares white hot as Angie and Alejandro embark on a demanding trek through the most remote, undeveloped areas of the country. In a plot full of twists and turns, they must battle fanatical cult members, back-stabbing thugs, and the elements. She knows their affair can't last, yet the more she learns of Alejandro, the more Angie wonders if there's more to him beneath the surface.

Despite its pulse-raising fast pace, Obsession offers well-developed characters--and invites the reader to explore the good and bad that's in all of us. The duality of characters also brings about surprising plot twists that are sure to delight. Fans of James Rollins will particularly enjoy the climactic scenes, which these strange bedfellows encounter life-and-death scenarios, explosive action, and haunting bits of the unexplainable. Book: Obsession
Author: Sharon Buchbinder
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Length: Approximately 246 Pages

OBSESSION by SHARON BUCHBINDER is a fast paced romantic suspense that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. This book has all the elements that I, as a romantic suspense lover, really enjoy. The plot is complex with two very gripping storylines coming together flawlessly and sexual tension that will have the reader sweating. Whew!

I must admit that the subject matter in this book is not something that I would normally read. Mexican drug lords? Well, I live in Arizona, so I get to hear enough about them on the news. Fanatical religious cults? This is something I personally find so taboo that it's just never been a priority to use my reading time on. I mean, really, what fun is that? Well, I'm here to tell you, you won't be able to put the book down. It's just that good.

There were also some supernatural elements introduced in this book that I really enjoyed. Getting down to the very basics, Good VS Evil? You bet, and I LOVED every minute of it. Even if this is not a subject matter that you normally read, take a chance. You won't be let down. I highly recommend OBSESSION by SHARON BUCHBINDER.

Angie’s infant son is kidnapped by her cult leader father and spirited off to Mexico. When the U.S. authorities can’t locate baby Jake, Angie goes looking for him through the friend of a friend.

Enter Alejandro, the drug cartel boss lady’s right hand man, a hunk if there ever was one, and a man with a secret. He’s an undercover agent looking for a little justice of his own. Bad weather keeps them from setting out to the cult’s mountain hideaway immediately, giving rise to lots of chemistry between this pair.

Buchbinder’s story held my interest and kept me turning pages. Enjoyed it!

Obsession is a gripping, heart pounding, heart wrenching story. Angie has had a life from hell, in the hands of a religious zealot, psychopath, who just happens to be her father.
Finally thinking herself free of her father, she is thrust into a worse nightmare when he kidnaps her son.
Alejandro is a good man, forced to play a bad man. Undercover with a Mexican drug lord, he is caught in the middle. Falling for Angie, desperate to help her, but unable to blow his cover.
Their attraction for each other has to take a back seat to Angie search for her son. A search that she know may lead to her death or worse re-imprisonment by her father.
You can't help but love Angie. She's made a lot of mistakes in her life. But the fact that she survived at all is a testament to her strength. She is frankly amazing.
This book was a long time in the making, and it shows. It is well written and takes you on an incredible journey of love, with just a little bit of mysticism that really makes you think.
I highly recommend you stock up on the tissues, find a quiet corner, and be prepared to read Obsession from beginning to end, because you won't be able to put it down.

Phew, this book has a TON in it. Where to begin? Angie is a kick-a$$ and that continues throughout the story, even as she's had a truly horrific upbringing. Her parents are not just part of a cult but the leaders of it. Her dad, who goes by "Father" is no kind of father or leader at all. He uses her as an example to his followers all throughout Angie's childhood. He beats, starves, abuses and secretly rapes her. It's amazing Angie comes out as solid and strong as she is. After a mistaken foray into drugs, Angie got clean and had a son. A son that her parents kidnap as he is the "Chosen One" whom they use to manipulate their followers. They disappear into Mexico to a secret compound that his followers built. It is here Angie goes to find her son and it's here she meets Alejandro. He is working for a woman drug cartel boss, Isabel, who is willing (for complicated reasons) to help Angie get her son back. From the start they have a ton of chemistry and finally as they are on the move to rescue her son, it explodes between them in a hot union. It isn't until the end of the journey that Angie finds out there is more to Alejandro and his mission in Mexico than she knows...

This book touches on cult leader's abusing their power and how brainwashed their followers can be. It highlights the drug trade from Mexico and the violence that surrounds it while diving into how destructive human sex trafficking is. In the end, there is an epic rescue and resolution of "Father" and Angie's mother. Wonderful, exciting book. Highly Recommend it.

This book had so many twists and turns that kept me turning each page with anticipation. A mother's worst nightmare comes true when her child is kidnapped. How far will this mom go to save her son? It's a simply answer for Angela Edmonds, till death.

Angela has had a rough life of abuse, sex and drugs. But when she gets pregnant she changes her life around and becomes a lawyer to raise her child. Her parents are religious fanatics who are planning on escaping to a Mexican compound with her child. Many a paranormal story of psychics claim that when they are born with a membrane on their faces at birth foretells of their gift.

Little Jake is named the "Chosen One" as the cull is removed from his face at birth. The grandparents do not bother to care for Angela after birth, but she has an otherworldly visit. Does she have a guardian angel or was it the stress from labor? She chose to believe in the stress. Little Jake is a happy healthy baby who supposedly cures an elderly cult member, thus proving to the rest of the followers of his power.

Recreationist cult leader is Zeke Edmonds and his devoted naive wife is Miriam Edmonds. The father has visions from God and it is his job to lead them into the End of The World. Miriam follows by his side as his faithful and fearful wife. Zeke uses brute force to gain control and Miriam uses a paddle.

Alejandro is working for a drug cartel and is trying to keep himself alive. When he meets Angela his world spins out of control but only can focus on her. He is afraid of falling for a woman even if she can outrun and out shoot him or his friends. Alejandro promises to rescue Jake even if it costs the life of everyone that he cares for.

So many threads in this story come together to form a larger picture that gripped me till the end. These details make this story so fluid in reading and understanding.

The ending of the story left me wanting to know more about their life and is there a Guardian Angel watching over them or does Jake truly have the power? I thirst for more from this author!!

In this story there is violence, sex, death, hope, paranormal, and a deep mystery. I would definitely label it as adult content. I was given this book to review from the author/publisher through Reading Alley and in exchange I give my unbiased opinion.

I couldn’t have thought of a better name for this romantic suspense novel by Sharon Buchbinder! It was such a fantastic read that held me on the edge of my seat the entire time! The plot is complex with two amazing storylines coming together flawlessly and sexual tension that will leave the reader sweating and panting. Okay, maybe not panting, but that’s a possibility!

I truly felt for Angie. Her newborn son was kidnapped and taken across country lines to Mexico. I can’t even imagine the pain and fear she felt. There’s good vs. evil in this book and I absolutely loved every single minute of it.

OBSESSION by Sharon Buchbinder is an amazing story full of edge-of-your-seat suspense, complex characters, and a gripping storyline that kept me turning the pages late into the night.
Sharon. Buchbinder did an incredible job developing her heroine, single mother, Angie Edmonds. Angie thought her childhood was a nightmare, but nothing prepared her for the day her own psychopathic parents kidnapped her son. Reeling from a mother’s worst fear, Angie sets out alone on a dangerous mission to get her son back—until she meets Alejandro Torres.
I’m not sure I would describe our hero, Alejandro as the good guy, but he is definitely the man for strong-minded Angie. I was immediately drawn to this spicy alpha male. Even his name is steamy.
As an undercover agent, Alejandro is forced to lie to Angie to keep his cover and to protect their lives. I especially loved watching the sparks fly as our hero and heroine dance around each other. Their chemistry sizzled right off the page. Honestly, I have no idea how Angie was able to resist Alejandra for as long as she did.
The supernatural element in this story is just plain ingenious. It’s the classic good vs evil, but I loved how Sharon Buchbinder carried this off in the story. Sorry, no spoiler alerts here. I don’t want to ruin the thrill of discovery. Believe me; you will be cheering as loud as I was in the end.
I wouldn’t be doing this story justice without mentioning what I found so remarkable about Obsession. Sharon Buchbinder was able to weave some of today’s front pages issues, human trafficking, the violent consequences of Mexico’s drug cartel, and fanatic religious cults into a brilliant, complex plot. To cover one of these issues in a romance novel is remarkable, but to combine all three is in my opinion was what made Obsession one of the best stories I have read in a long time. Obsession is one of those stories that when you turn the last page, you can’t stop thinking about it for days, even weeks later. I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.

Angela has had a tough life and when her son Jake came into her life it was the best thing to happen to her. Until her barbaric cult leader parents kidnapped him and took him to Mexico. Since the US FBI wouldn't help she gained help with a notorious drug lord in Mexico. Isabella (The drug lord) is a mother and sympathetic to Angela and is will to use her sources to get the baby back.

This is another one of those books that are out of my comfort zone for reading but I took the chance and found this book great.

I loved the strength Angela had, she managed to come from a total abusive past, went through her own issued and made her life better. With a past like hers she could've easily just continued with her drug use, become a horrible parent, or abuse her child. But, she strived to be better and do everything in her power to be a better mother and get her child back. She went against her beliefs and seeked help from drug dealers when all else failed.I loved that the characters were complex which made them more real. I loved that I got to know some of the back story of what happened to Angela in the past to backup for the readers to care for her. I loved that there was more point of views to see what was happening on Angela's side and and what was going on on her fathers side.

This book is a real page turner, full of suspense, and had me till the end. I also like that it had a supernatural element in there.

Overall I loved the book, you lovely readers should check out this great book. Highly Recommend.

A Very Moving, Informative Story

In this revealing novel, Angie Edmonds is suffering the struggles of childbirth. Not in the hospital, but in her parents' home where her mother is skilled as a midwife. Things go wrong and while her life seems to fade, she envisions herself rising above the room, walking a long, black tunnel with a bright shiny angel beckoning her. A son is born, his grandfather holding him high announcing that he is the Chosen One. Though Angie wants to stay with the Angel, she soon drifts back to reality where her one mission is to care for her son and to get him very far away from her father's cult. Now she was Jake's mom and with the help of the boy's father, Dan, and a support group, she gets away from her father and the cult. After a year of her father being held in a maximum security prison, he escapes, kidnapping Jake who is now one year old. The FBI believes that Jake is now in Mexico, and Angie is going to seek him out herself. This is an amazing story which reflects many horrendous groups that exist in our world today -- cults, drug cartels, and human trafficking. This is the story of one woman's struggle of finding her son, and also finding love along the harsh path. This paranormal story is excellently written, edited, and grabs you right from page one. It has many twists and turns, sadness and joy. It's unforgettable; highly recommend.

Gripping and Compelling Book

Right from the beginning, the way Ms Buchbinder describes Angie Edmond's childbirth you know it's going to be an emotional read. The pregnancy was a result of her turning to someone in time of need.
Having been raised in a cult with fanatical parents, Angie finally breaks ties with her family and strikes out on her own, having gained her independence and an education she creates a life of her own.
She gives in to her parent's request to visit them, and it is during her visit that she goes into labor far from any medical facility. Her mother AIDS in her childbirth but not as a mother should, but rather with threats to " cut the child out" if she had to (at the father's insistence).
Her father believes that this child is "the chosen one" for his own reasons, and for his followers.
The child is kidnapped and what ensues is an ordeal that will require expert help. In comes Alejandro, the man who will move not just mountains to aid in the recovery of the child, but in moving Angie too.
This may be difficult for some to read as it may have a trigger effect. Topic include human trafficking, drug cartel, incest and abuse.
I got lost in the reading of the book, it was that compelling.

From beginning to end, Sharon Buchbinder engages the reader with a story you’d find in the day’s headlines. From cults, to kidnapping, to human trafficking, to drug cartels, all are woven into a story that keeps you turning the page.
The reader is pulled in from the first page, learning about Angela and her horrific experiences with her own parents. Her father, leader of a cult only wants one thing, the child that Angela is carrying, even if her mother has to cut it out of her. A year later, Angela has started a new life for herself and her child only to have him ripped away and kidnapped by his grandparents.
In efforts to find and rescue her child, Angela is thrown into the world of a powerful drug cartel. Finding assistance with known drug dealers, gives Angela pause, but her son’s life is on the line. The end justified the means, as any loving mother would agree.
Sharon Buchbinder’s research and abilities to develop characters with personalities that light up the page draw the reader in. The plot turns and twists keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens to this group that on the surface would be natural mortal enemies, joining forces for the Chosen One and his mother.

Angela Edmonds is in Mexico trying to find someone to help her find her son. Her crazy father is the leader of a cult that is in hiding in the Mexican wasteland. The authorities in USA won't help her. Only Isabel Ramirez who is in charge of the underworld in the region can provide the men and weapons needed to rescue her baby.
Alejandro Espinosa Santoyo is a crooked accountant working for the Mexican boss lady.( Or is he ? ). He can't help but feel sorry for the desperate mother, but he must keep his eye on the bigger fish.
A really good romantic suspense with lots of danger for our protagonists. Our heroine has had a very difficult life, and thought she had sorted it. That was until her crazy parents kidnapped her son. She doesn't realise her son is a very special boy. The indigenous people will also play a big part in this story. Our hero is hiding a big secret, and personal reasons for his work.
I was hooked from the first page until the end. I couldn't see how this was going to work out. I also liked the boss lady, I want to learn more of her story. A very intriguing story. I loved it.

Didn't want to put the book down, even when it was done! I fell in love with the complex, background-rich characters and wanted to know more, more, more about who they are. Why is this mother and child apparently gifted by something supernatural? What exactly is the history between the drug-lord (or would she be called a drug-lady?) and the friend back home? How is the hero going to adjust back to "normal" life?

If you like suspense, strong, inspirational female characters, and a bit of moral questioning (just who is good and who is bad???), you'll love Obsession!

I liked that this book handled some very sensitive topics - human trafficking, occult/fanatics, incest, rape, police corruption (in Mexico) and a hotbed of other issues. Unfortunately I wasn't really keen on the main character, but I do think she was well written. I think I mostly didn't like this book because the action dragged out and things were too easy to figure out. That said, things are quite realistic and thus frustrating. The happy ending did make things better though!

This book was definitely more than I was expecting. I had never read the author before but was pleasantly surprised by the story. Angie's baby has been kidnapped and taken into Mexico by her parents. Angie's parents are leading a over zealous religious cult. Her father has many crazy beliefs. I don't want to give away the whole story line. Think Jim Jones meets David Koresh. Angie's parents in reality are pretty sick people. Angie meets Alejandro who is a undercover American ATF agent. Alejandro is working for a female Mexican drug lord that has promised to help Angie get her baby back. Everyone thinks Angie's dad is the worst, but truly her mother is the most manipulative one, if you ask me. This book has drama, suspense, kidnapping, cults, religion, drugs, romance, brothels, and human trafficking just to name a few. This book shows what lengths a great parent will go to, to get their kid back. Angie happens to fall in love along the way too. There was a lot of obsessions in this book. Most were the wrong kind.

I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily left this review.

It was an okay read. Sedated, dragged a little and didn't hit all the spots. I will say this, if you are religious I advice against this book. There are something that were a little 'blasphemous' and it would be a real turn off an offensive to religious readers. There is one part where they mention Yahweh that quickly made me want to quit reading. But I chose to skip those parts instead and read the rest of it.This review was originally posted on Cocktails and Books.

The writing was fairly pacy, keeping going throughout the story.
The story itself had lots of highs and lows - between drug lords, human traffickers, extremist cults, barbaric practices, kidnap, corrupt officials, inst love affairs, second comings - I'm sure there are more I've missed as well.
The issue of drug cartels and the extremists are hard thought provoking.
The rescue is more out of the A team!
Then there are the calls to god and out of body experiences.
So quite a mash up of different themes.
Not quite my cup of tea 2.5*

I have been trying to finish it for a couple months. I realized I stopped in the middle of the fial fight and didn't really care how it ended. I finished it. Pretty unbelievable. Good story though.
