In four weeks, Atlantis -- the prize jewel of Ancient Greece -- will slip under the glittering surface of the Aegean Sea. But 16-year-old Artemis doesn't know that yet.
She's more concerned with her impending engagement to Troy, the son of her family's archenemy. Artemis has enjoyed a life of privilege on Atlantis, but debts have swamped her home life. Her marriage has been arranged by her parents, who hope the union will put to rest the feud between their families. Artemis desperately wishes to chart her own course, but her loyalty to those she loves complicates her yearning for freedom.
When a boating accident plunges her into the arms of Egis, an enthralling merman from the undersea kingdom of Aegon, Artemis learns of Atlantis's doomed fate. She must decide whether to follow her head or her heart as she races against time to save the lives of her fellow islanders before Atlantis sinks into the sea forever.
A coming-of-age tale of first love and free will, "Immersion" will leave you breathless.

I was immediately captivated. Loveable characters and a wonderful balance of moving plot and descriptive narration. Honestly, very impressed by this authors debut novel.
I enjoyed this from front to back. Or, I suppose more accurately in the world of electronic media, left to right. With many choices obviously made in deference to the teen-aged female readers, (neither demographic remotely fits me) nonetheless I was absolutely enchanted by this book within the first ten pages.
The mark of a really good book in my mind is combining a well-wrought story with a description of a world that is vibrant and...larger than life isn't quite right. Perhaps richer than life?
As intense and with all the things that jump out to you in the way you take in the world at fourteen, MJ Prest painted a world that was comfortably donned like one of Artemis' cloaks throughout the telling of the tale.
When I catch myself mentally hanging collections of adjectives on the surrounding world, I know I've been reading a good book.
I really enjoyed this book. The plot moves along at a good pace -- slowly enough so that scenes and characters are described in vivid detail, but quickly enough that suddenly a chapter had ended and I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. I've found that some YA novels can really drag (or else be so vapid and poorly written that I end up skimming because they're not worth my full attention), but that wasn't the case here. While Immersion has key YA features like first love and [perhaps a requirement nowadays] a supernatural component, my favorite aspect was the in-depth portrayal of life in Ancient Greece. In particular, what life might have been like for a young woman in Ancient Greece. This is a great YA novel for thoughtful, intelligent young women - all throughout I couldn't help thinking to myself, "Wow, this is SO much better-written than Twilight" - but it's also accessible and universal in its themes.
The imagery and language in this book really sets the scene--I felt transported to the island of Atlantis. Having not even touched on Ancient Greece since middle school history, sure, I'm no expert, but the writing seemed impeccably researched and, more importantly, believable and interesting. Heroine Artemis is strong-willed, fiercely independent, yet wants to make her family proud. Doesn't seem much has changed in centuries. My absolute favorite part was the climax. The author M.J. Prest does a remarkable job with pacing and the book is a page turner until the end. Would be a fun beach read, perhaps on the sands of Greece?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found myself making time to read it so I could find out what happened next. The description of the island made me feel like I was there. The characters became real (yes, even the merman and mermaids) and I wanted things to work out for them except for, of course, the villain. I am looking forward the next book in this trilogy. This is a great book for teenage girls but also a wonderful break from reality for us teenagers at heart.
A wonderful tale of first love, tradition and family loyalty set in Ancient Greece on the doomed island of Atlantis. MJ weaves a great story with so many details that you can imagine yourself right there, on the island, smelling the flowers and the salty air of the ocean. Immersion is the first book in a trilogy and I cannot wait to see (read) what will happen to the heroine, Artemis, next.
I very much enjoyed this book! Vivid descriptions, an awesome setting, mermaids, and an intriguing plot made this one of my favorite young adult books. I can't wait to read more.
