Peter Wilcox is a bright-eyed and fluffy-tailed new attorney, who witnesses the "hit" of the managing partner in his law firm. Because of this inadvertent run-in and supposed link with the mafia, Peter can't find another job anywhere and is forced to tend his kids full-time while his wife, Alison, brings home the bacon. Peter hates the new job: His young kids are a whirlwind of destruction wherever they go, his daughter suffers from a crippling fear of an imaginary alligator, and he and Alison seem to be growing further and further apart as she works long hours. As it turns out, Alison is not an interior designer, as Peter was led to believe, but is the assassin who killed Peter's boss-a fact that Peter is none-too-happy about-and things really get crazy when Alison's Mafioso peers decide that she is better off dead. What follows is a hilarious romp, as the emasculated Peter has to deal with a super-cool-femme-fatale of a wife, while he and his two kids are mercilessly thrust into a world of gangsters and professional hit men.PRAISE FOR THE DOUBLE STROLLER HAND GRENADE"A Wild Ride!"-@Trev Marshall, author of "The Opening""...will make you wanna jump out of your seat and kick some butt!"-@Izzy Gerber"...akin to rolling down the windows on a cool summer night, blasting the music, and jamming the accelerator-pure, exciting, and unabashed fun!"-@Lolo"...the perfect escape novel..."-@Greyson Blue"A hilarious satire of husband and wife roles, jam-packed with action, quirky characters, and an explosive finale."-@Aleatoire Magazine
I received this book free from Good Reads. I had not heard of this author & not read any of his books, so did not really know what genre of book it comes under. I still am not sure what genre it comes under. Having said that I read it from first page to last & thoroughly enjoyed it. When the father was a house husband looking after two young children, the story was very well written & true to my experiences as a grandma looking after young grandchildren. The rest of the story concerning the wife as an interior designer/hit woman was hard to believe. The events that happened were unbelievable to me, but then I do not know much about hitmen/women! It was as though I was on an express train & wanting it to slow down & get to the end quickly. I will recommend it to my friends & look forward to reading some more of this authors works.
First off--this is quite a different book than Hibbard's first offering to the fiction table, This Side of Eden, and he's gotten better. Both books are great--the first (Eden) is a touching love story/account of survival. When you read it, you can tell that Hibbard is working through something with the book. Much like this one, Eden is about the relationships a father has with his kids and his wife--but in a context that makes you think about that relationship, given its ups and downs, its full-on joy and heart-wrenching tragedy.
The Double Stroller Hand Grenade, on the other hand, is a balls-to-the-wall, non-stop, action-comedy. Hibbard pulls all the stops with this one, depicting a father who really wants to be the bread winner, but due to circumstances out of his control, is forced to be the homemaker. He tries--I really do think that this father tries to be a good dad to his kids, but he hasn't a clue. The insane neighbor is great, super weird and just crazy (to give you an idea of this guy, he won't step foot in a bathtub out of respect for his father, who was electrocuted in the bathtub when his boombox fell into the water while taking a bath). Stuff like that, this book is full of really random, sometimes a little dark, humor. I couldn't stop laughing through much of it.
Maybe the best part of this book, is that the dad feels completely emascualted. His wife is this super-cool vixen, femme-fatal type woman, living this double life, while her husband is at home cleaning the floors and changing diapers. When the action picks up, and it does within the first few chapters, it doesn't let up, and its great fun. This is the perfect escape novel, you can just sit down and enjoy this roller-coaster of a ride. Highly recommend!
It has been a very long time since I've had this much fun with a book. I can't remember the last time that I looked forward to reading a book as much as this one. Every day, I would finish everything I needed to do (and sometimes not :) so that I could sit down and just read without being interrupted. As you can probably tell from the title, the description (and even the cover), this book doesn't take itself too seriously. Most of the books out there today seem so full of it, where the authors think they are writing something much more profound than the book really is. The Double Stroller Hand Grenade is no Swann's Way, but the author certainly knows that, and has created something akin to rolling down the windows on a cool summer night, blasting the music, and jamming the accelerator--pure, exciting, and unabashed fun.
Another one of Derrick Hibbard's exciting page-turners with unexpected twists in the plot and a fresh mix of true-to-life characters in bizarre, hilarious, yet uncannily realistic circumstances. A fun read, a great escape, a trip just outside life's humdrum routine.
A good read, fuuny and action packed. The ending also unexpectable! I'm anxious to read his next book!. This is worthwhile investment in my business. https://tinyjunction.com/
