For all non-loserish dads and their sons. Read this little book to find out why I, Barry Loser, am definitely not at all loserish, even though my dad definitely is. Praise for my other book, I am not a Loser, which is about 8 million times longer than this one: ‘Brilliant’ – My mum ‘Amazing’ – Also my mum
After graduating with a first class degree in advertising, graphic design and illustration in 1997, Jim Smith was spotted by the owner of a small coffee shop chain and brought in to fill the walls of their flagship store with his paintings.
It was a three month contract; seventeen years later, Jim is head of design at Puccino's Worldwide Ltd, now an international coffee shop franchise with stores in the UK, Europe and Egypt.
In the meantime he's illustrated kids' food packaging for M&S, drawn cartoons on the sides of PJ smoothies, created in-store graphics for Orange phone stores, designed book covers and branded a New York based Iced Tea company.
In 2010, Jim launched the hugely successful Waldo Pancake range of stationery and gift products, now sold in the UK, Australia, Singapore, Europe and the US.
'I am not a Loser' by Barry Loser, the first of a series of children's books 'spellchecked' by Jim, was published in 2012, having already sold rights to nine countries. The sequel, 'I am Still Not a Loser' was the winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize 2013 and declared the funniest book for children aged seven to fourteen.
Jim has now written six Barry Loser books, and numerous short stories. 'Future Ratboy', a spin-off series of books based on Barry's favourite TV star, debuts in July 2015.
I feel a bit nasty only giving this book one star, but to be fair it was all it deserved. The book is ridiculously short and to be fair, plain boring. In fact, it’s not even mildly enjoyable, admittedly I’m not the audience which the book is intended for but this is not a book I’d want to share with children. A lot of words are spelt phonetically rather than in a grammatically correct manner e.g. “unkeel” instead of uncool. It’s a minor annoyance but when added up with all the other little nuances, it just doesn’t make for an enjoyable read.
The plot to the story is practically non-existent. I don’t say that lightly, it truly is a book of nothing. It’s boring, quite dull and it’s only redeeming feature is the illustrations which are quite enjoyable. I’m extremely glad that it’s a free book on Amazon and I have no intentions of either buying a physical copy of the book or ever reading it again. There are plenty more books out there which are far more suitable for younger children that they will derive a lot more pleasure from!
Did not enjoy reading this at all. Not sure what the practical usage of this book is with children though it is mildly entertaining. Definitely not a book you might wish to revisit after reading once.
This book is a (very) short tease of the type of shenanigans a reader can expect from the Barry Loser book series. It was my first look at the series and though I was only mildly entertained, I think the target audience of 5-10 year olds might be more amused. In this quick read, Barry's dad tries to show Barry he has good taste in superheroes, but Barry is not impressed. He does however leave quite an impression on the loft roof! Free in the UK Kindle store, so can't complain really. I am going to check out other books at some point just to explore the popularity of this series.
Very short e-Book just a promotion of the actual book .. but its not good even in a small scene. Didn't like it at all. May be that's because I am not a kid for whome the book would be targetted.
I have always loved comics, and I hope that I will always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics or Diamond Comics or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on the international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I can. I Love comics to bit, may comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading.
Pointless drivel, I'm not sure if this is aimed at the adult, YA or child market but either way it's not worth wasting time with, there's no substance to it, you can find more amusing tales in a Christmas cracker.
Just wasn't feeling it and I hate giving books one star but I just didn't click with it. U may though and its good for your reading challenge as its short.
It is a funny story about son and father, doing silly things to each other. However, I don't think the title is appropriate to use the word loser. It's kinda harsh.
This book is ok, It's quite short but doesn't make me want to read any other longer books. I wouldn't recommend it to any of mu nieces or nephews either. Ok book but that's all
I just don't know what to think of these stories but in some very weird way they are quite funny. and since I read my mum is a loser I was like why not read my dad is a loser too. So keel.
2.5* ----------------- The punctuation in this is terrible. There are no quote-marks around dialogue. There are no apostrophes in contractions. That is really distracting for me. It pulls away from the story.
The story itself is so-so. The child, Barry, is obsessed with Ratman and Ratman memorbilia and action figures. His Dad tries to show him some old-school action figures from his youth to distract Barry from Ratman. It doesn't really work.
A very cute children's book which is available for free for the kindle. I have to say that I thought the drawings in this book were so cute. Overall, it's a quick and easy read that is sure to keep the attention of any young child and keep them entertained for a while.
It's just ok for spelling learners it is too small. I took just a minute to read it but drawings are ok. But then to not better than diary of a wimpy kid and not keepers also like that. Especially for Ben
