The Other Witch #0.5

Rune of the Witch

Rate this book
Everyone wants to be normal – but no one wants to be ordinary.

When my most hated enemy, Bastion, comes to me for help, I tell him to take a long walk off a short pier. I’m not helping the griffin assassin that killed my lover. But when the Crone visits my coven, she tells me that I must help him find his daughter or I won’t achieve my full potential.

I want greatness like others want wealth. You can keep your fame and fortune, I want to make sure my life matters. I reluctantly agree to help locate the missing griffin. If greatness is on the cards, I’m willing to play – no matter who deals my hand.

When a raven with broken wings lands on my balcony, I know that a black witch has entered the game. Finding the griffin suddenly becomes a lot more complicated. I’ll have to awaken my sentient grimoire to help me find the answers I seek – and that always has a price.

Only time will tell whether it is one that I can afford to pay.

Don't miss this witchy series if you like humour, heart and a strong heroine with a slow burn, enemies to lovers, fade-to-black romance.

Heather Harris has become a must-read author for me.

When she diverted from Jinx’s storyline to follow Lucy’s, initially I was annoyed. I wasn’t particularly attached to Lucy and didn’t think I’d enjoy her story. I was so wrong! I ended up loving her novels as much as those featuring Jinx.

When I heard Harris was going to write a separate arc for Amber, I still was a bit skeptical. But this novella drew me in and now has me eager to read more. Amber has reasons for her aloof and grumpy nature, and the coming dance between her and a certain equally aloof and grumpy griffin promises some great fireworks.

Trust in Heather Harris and get the novella. You’ll end up loving Amber, too.

This novella is as wonderful as all of Heather G Harris' books. Veering into the story of a background character from her Glimmer/Pack books, this absolutely stands alone. We get to see the viewpoint of a normally brusque and almost unapproachable character, the witch Amber DeLea, and I loved seeing her as a sympathetic character, with strong reasons for her emotional walls. The conflict specific to this book is solved and done, but there are enough overarching stories left to make me eager for the next book. Another winner!

Perfect intro for Amber

Love this first look into Amber's life. What it is like for her when she is not running off to help Jinx or Lucy. I mean, she still helps people - but we get her point of view, and behind the curtain.

I loved the story. The bits where she revealed some of her softer side. I really felt for her in regards to her family, and putting aside her feelings to do the right thing.

There are so many other things that I wish I could gush about - but it would give it all away!

If you like Urban Fantasy, FMC with heart, bravery and wit, this one is for you.

Note: It is a novella that introduces a story series that isn't out yet. It ends on a "sort of" cliff hanger. You know that things are coming, but the current plot point is brought to a close. It is not crucial to have read the Glimmer series or Heather's Other Wolves series, but it would help give a lot of context that would make things easier to get a feel for.

I can't wait for the first full book. It's going to be so good!!!!!!

I received an ARC of this book and as it is so short read it fast! Amber’s story was snappy and humorous and I enjoyed viewing the world through her eyes. This book stands alone or can be read after Harris’ other books in this universe. It was a delight to read and I eagerly await further in the series.

Ok, I didn't realize this was a prequel when I picked it up. However, the book reintroduced characters from her previous series and I am very intrigued to see where it goes.
Bastian the griffin assassin vs. Amber the no nonsense coven mother. Enemies to lovers = a good time.

This is an ARC review but honesty prevails.

Heather has created another winning series. I was very aware of how much the tone of the writing matches Amber. She's a no nonsense, curt, standoffish person and the writing reflects that. This book sets up the dynamic between her and Bastion quite nicely. I'm looking forward to seeing how they inevitably deal with his curse. Can't wait for more!

I received an ARC to provide an honest review.

Heather G. Harris never disappoints.... this is entertainment at its finest...

I am happy that we are learning more about Amber DeLea, the larger than life secondary character from the Other Realm series. Amber, with her witch magic, has saved the day many times as she is often called upon to fix things. Now she gets her own series, her own mystery to solve... and dare I hope... a love interest.

Also, making an appearance is Bastion, another larger than life secondary character from the Other Realm. The tension between these two is thick....

I am enjoying getting some of Amber's back story and discovering how her magic works. It certainly helps explain her rather prickly nature, and Bastion, whom she claims to hate, brings out even more of Amber's snark. Oh, how the sparks fly when these two are together. Given Heather's sneaky sense of humor, I am anticipating oodles of snark and spark in the upcoming books.

Although this series has sufficient details to stand on its own, I do think that reading the other series that are set in the Other Realm will add depth to your reading experience. The writing is exceptional, so going back to the beginning is no hardship.

Happy reading.

I have been looking forward to Amber's story since I was first introduced to the Other Realm. I am thankful to receive an advanced copy to dive into the story.

The tension between Amber and Bastion has always piqued my interest so I'm extremely excited to see how it unfolds. Plus I love the hard MCs who only have a soft side for their love interest so I'm hoping that's where this goes.

I'm a little disappointed in Amber's continued pity party on life in general and am really hoping for some positive character growth and a HEA for her. Also, dying to know who Fehu belongs too!

Finally, we get Amber's story. Amber is a witch, leader of her coven, considered one of the strongest witches alive. But for all her accomplishments, she is lonely. Could her sworn enemy, the griffin Bastion, be the answer? Add in a visiting raven, a talking grimoire, and a whole new cast of witches, and we have an exciting new series to look forward to.

2.0 🌟

I’ve tried Heather G. Harris before and, unfortunately, didn’t finish that book. Still, I wanted to give her another chance, hoping this novella might change my mind.

At just a short length, Rune of the Witch reads more like an introduction than a fully fleshed-out story. Using the personalized preview in StoryGraph, I can already see that I might not finish this series either.

“strongly with your frequent enjoyment of enemies to lovers dynamics (16 high-rated matches) and magic-driven plots (7 matches). The mysterious, adventurous mood matches your positive responses to dark, tense stories with magical stakes. However, its fade-to-black romance diverges from your higher-rated books, which often emphasize explicit spice. Consider whether you’re in the mood for a slower-burn, less sexually explicit magical conflict versus the gritty, high-heat romances you typically favor.”

And that, right there, is the issue—fade-to-black romance and a lack of grit might be the downfall for me, as my reading taste has shifted heavily toward darker, more intense storytelling. While there were elements that aligned with my usual favorites, I think this one might not hold my attention long enough to keep me invested. However I will be starting the next book.

Heather G. Harris books never fail to have a hit start, but this one also has a hit ending - it left me feeling punched in the gut for its suddenness. I turned the page and groaned when I realised it was the end.

This prequel gave just enough to leave me wanting more of Amber DeLea. It's short, sharp, and the perfect teaser for the main series.

While I found the narrative a tad stiff at times, I think this is understandable given the introduction of a new point-of-view that differs significantly from previous characters. Additionally, it's possible this reflects Amber's personality, given her reserved nature and greater maturity compared to our past protagonists.

Overall, I think this is going to be a great series and any minor problems will be quickly dealt with. My only real complaint is that I am mad at what a tease this book was!

Rune of the witch
Amber DeLea is a coven mother meaning she has her own coven and helps to train witches. She has discovered she has a practicing black witch in her coven. She also has to work with the griffin Bastion that killed her lover to find his sister.
A very good start to a new series, can’t wait to read the Hex of the Witch coming in September 2023.

Meet Amber- coven mother, daughter, and stressed. Amber lives an organized life and is rising to the very top- but a griffin might stand in her way. Bastion is searching for his daughter and needs Amber to help him. Unfortunately, their past is not all sunshine and roses.

I loved getting to read from Amber's POV. I loved her in both the other realm and other wolf series. So excited to go on this journey

Hello New Book Boyfriend

I absolutely adored these two characters! Amber is a tough, take no crap kind of witch who can come across as cold until you get glimpses of her big heart. I'm a bona fide Amber cheerleader. I want to see her achieve her goals but also find the friends and acceptance she so deserves. She's the kind of grumpy heart-of-gold character you can't help but love. And then there's Bastion. He's dark, dangerous, and oh-so-delicious. Thanks to a brilliant backstory between these two characters, I can not wait to see how this enemies to lovers story unfolds.

What a banging start to Amber's story!
I always loved this character, a bad ass, seemingly grumpy witch who's turned up in Jinx's and Lucy's series before. Now we get to hear her voice and understand her perspective. She's not as hard as she appears, might have a heart of gold after all.

In this prequel novella, the one Griffin she wants absolutely nothing with "requests" her help to find her missing daughter. She really doesn't want to help him, but sometimes you gotta do the right thing, no matter how much you hate to.
Not only that, something seems to be amiss within her coven...

Anyway, I'll stop here, before I spoil anything. It is a short, sweet read, which introduced yet another kick ass heroine in the Other Realm universe.

Loved it. 10 stars.

The author was generous enough to provided her newsletter subscribers this prequel for free. It's a spinoff/same world series to The Other Realm/Court (first/third set in The Other) and The Other Wolf (second). I'm a fan of all Harris' Other series and recommend them for those who enjoy an expansive UF+R world.

The Other Witch focuses on Amber DeLea, the witch with a tough exterior, but soft heart. She's in the previous series and has slowly been edging toward friendships with both Jinx and Lucy, so I was anxious to learn more ‘bout her especially since her male counterpart in the books is Bastion, the griffin, who is equally intriguing. Plus, there's a talking grimoire!

Bastion, who is Amber's least favorite person because of sad past events (learned about fully in Jinx' series), comes to the witch for help locating his missing daughter. She's not at all inclined to help him, but sympathizing with the missing girl and receiving advice from a mentor has her giving in and taking the job. The story itself only a prequel is short, but shares a deeper insight into this otherwise tightlipped and extremely talented witch; it's more than interesting enough to entice you into wanting to continue on with her story.

From the moment I binged the first three books in Harris' The Other Realm series, I knew I was all in on anything she wrote in this world and I've not been disappointed yet. This extension of the world just adds more depth and color to the characters we've come to know and love. I'm looking forward to future stories about Amber and Bastion, all coming out this year: Hex of the Witch (29 Sept 23), Coven of the Witch (31 Oct 23) and Familiar of the Witch (30 Nov 23).

Personal note: The author's short, but touching portrayal of Amber's mother's dementia and their visit felt very much like my own ... this line perfectly, sadly sums up caring for a loved one with dementia:
Grief crushed me; it was so unfair that she was alive and with me, but at the same time she was lost to me.

While not necessary I recommend reading the Other Realm, Court, and Other Wolf series before this one. The characters within these pages are introduced there and give some background.

As this book opens, Bastion, is asking Amber for help. He'd prefer to go through Jessica but she's unreachable. He needs Amber to scry for his daughter, Charlize, he can't locate her even though she's wearing a tracking rune.

Bastion is also under a black witches curse which is slowly killing him. Amber notices the toll it's taking on him without pity, he deserves to die for his sins. His daughter doesn't.

Amber's problem with Bastion comes from the fact he killed Jake. Jake was her everything, she saved him after an assassin's attack and hid him away. He was blind and scarred but she loved him.

She consults with the Coven's Crone who is also her Aunt Abigay, and the goddess says she must help Bastion or his young would die.

That night her rune alarms go off, it registers as griffin but when she investigates she find an injured crow, no not a crow a Raven. The poor Raven had its wings snapped, it was not an accident it was deliberate and has Amber wondering if she has a Black Witch hiding in her ranks.

Amber heals the Raven and then does one more rune for the signature of who did this to the bird. She doesn't recognize the signature but it's definitely a witch. There is a Black Witch in their number.

Amber needs a recharge so she heads to Rosie's where the portal is. After entering the Common, Oscar her driver and protector takes her to the care home to see her mother. Oscar and her mother had a thing, but only one of them are ever recognized, never together. On this trip her mother asks if the prophecy has come to pass. Amber has no idea what she's talking about, and her mother switched the subject with her next sentence. After she goes to the Spice Shoppe, where she gathers more ingredients for potions.

She does the scrying for Bastion and it fails, but with the goddess saying she must do this, she has to look into an alternate way.

We learn much about Amber and her childhood in this book. Her friendship with both Jess and Lucy and her complicated feelings toward Bastion as well.

Although it seems the Raven she now calls Fehu isn't her familiar, I find myself intrigued by his frequent showing up.

I am already reading the next book. There are some things I think are going to carry through this series.

So this was my pick for us to read together, mostly because it was short and a prequel - I figured this should be an easy fun read. We needed a witchy book for BINGO.

But, for a prequel this sure felt like a short story within a series. There was history between the characters that I wasn't privy to other than the quick explanation of gargoyles kill people. Why do they do that? Why do people's loved ones get killed by the gargoyles and that's just normal stuff in this world? What?

I did like the premise, an enemy asking for help, and our witchy main character deciding to help despite her hatred for this enemy. But she doesn't do it out of the goodness of her heart, though she keeps convincing herself that she's good and doesn't always take payment. Here, she not only charges high prices but also believes this good deed will help her in her witchy journey.

The characters were interesting but we only got a surface level view of them. I would hope the full-length novel would give us more of the characters that a novella simply doesn't have room for. But I'm curious about the non-familiar raven that has claimed her.

The runes are interesting, and I liked the explanations that magic takes careful work and sometimes more. I'm confused though about the two worlds in parallel with a portal between them, and the need to go between them. Again, this was a quick summary in novella form and I'm hoping the world building in the actual novels explains this more.

The story was mostly told, not shown, straight narration and explanation in our main character's head. Again, I'm hoping the actual novels do better and go deeper. The description also made a big deal of telling you the story was in British English, not sure why. It was obvious and easy to follow. I'm still curious to put more of the series on my endless TBR.

This introductory novella to the “Other Witch” series sets a brisk pace and doesn’t falter throughout. Ms. Harris keeps us at a steady, though not breakneck, pace as Coven Mother Amber struggles with problems physical, political, emotional, and moral. The biggest problem? Being forced by both conscience and circumstance to do a job for someone she sees as an enemy. From the beginning, emotional tensions run high as she is torn one way and another. Her reactions ring very true throughout.
Though “Rune of the Witch” is part of an established fantasy world, it can be read as a stand-alone without any problem. I do suspect, however, that it can be most fully appreciated if one has read Ms. Harris’s previous installments in this world of the Other. While the cast of characters in this story is mercifully limited, having more of the backstory to hand would be a boon to the reader.
“Rune of the Witch” very clearly sets the stage for what it is to follow. I feel a bit awkward reviewing it because it is the front porch of the house, so to speak. It’s well-constructed, nicely decorated, I love the paint (but it seems it hasn’t quite dried yet) and the cushions on the furniture - and that raven on the bannister is just lovely. I can’t wait to see the front room and the dining room and I’m sure the gardens are absolutely stunning!!! I’m looking very forward to reading the rest of the series, which I’m sure will be more fleshed out and polished than this prequel. Perhaps due to the shortness of the novella, I didn’t feel able to engage with the characters as much as I have in her previous work. But again, its purpose is to set the stage: the main production will follow.
I received a free copy of this work in exchange for providing a review.

ARC received via Author's ARC team. All opinions are my own.

Amber DeLea is a side character in the various Other Realm series books and it's brilliant that she is getting a series of her own. (Not least because she is a favourite character of mine.) A grumpy, occasionally ferocious and intimidatingly competent witch, Amber is no one's fool and apt to take crap from absolutely no one. Not even a master assassin who happens to be a griffin. Honestly, she'd rather he just went away and got on with dying. Not that she's holding a (justifiable) grudge or anything. Then again, Amber is also ambitious so when the powers that be says she has to help him, she grits her teeth and gets on with it. And it's pretty clear that's not going to be the end of the story for the pair.

This was great fun. The novella was an enjoyable peek under Amber's hood. Harris always writes such refreshingly different female main characters whose excellence comes as much from intelligence, hard work and determination as from any supernatural gift. Best of all, she never feels the need to over 'Testosterone-Rex' the male characters to compensate, or conversely to tear them down in order to make female characters look better by comparison. A trend I hate with a burning passion (looking at you Maas.)

If you haven't read Harris' other books, you have a treat in store. While you don't have to read the various series in order, for best enjoyment start with Glimmer of the Other and work your way through. Really enjoyed this quick witchy read and can't wait for the main series.

I've loved everything this author has written so far so it is no surprise to me that this was just as wonderful as everything else. This is a general non spoilery review for the whole series.
The world is so rich and well developed. I loved Amber's character, her inner voice is so different from the slightly cold and unbending version we get of her in Lucy and Jinx's books, although we were beginning to see her soften as she was offered unconditional friendship from these two. Hearing what she thought of the other two and how much she valued them was everything I want to read about. I love platonic friendships in books as much as if not more than romantic relationships as it makes the world so much more believable and richer. And Bastion is every girls version of a hero, I loved the romance of these two and the adventure/mystery. I got so completely invested in the mystery and adventure itself, it was a rollercoaster with a satisfying climax, bringing together events from other books and further making this a world I love and is on my autobuy list. But to me the things that make these books stand out head and shoulders above so much other urban fantasy is the character dynamics and the 'little' details. Amber's sense of humour coming out in her mug collection for example, the little laughs, the moments of introspection and learning, and the touch of true friendship. They feel like my friends now and when I put down a book it is with a sense of loss. This author deserves to be shouted from the rooftops.

Heather's Notes
I did not like this book as much as I thought I would. Amber was a bit of ....well a witch. I like Bastien, and did not like the way she acted to him, nor did I think it justified. Also the narrotor is the same for all the books in the series, and her "voice" for Jess, Lucy, and now Amber is the same. It messes with the flow of the series. Still I like Amber better than Lucy, but not as much as Jess. I will try the next book. Hopefully Amber's attitude will improve.

What would you do if the person you hated – no, abhorred the most - came to you, desperate for help? I’m told that the best way to rid yourself of an enemy is to make them a friend, but I get the feeling that this childless Coven Mother would rather remain fruitless than assist an assassin in finding his daughter.

Amber DeLea, close friend to Jessica Sharp (AKA, Jinx of The Glimmer Series), is a force to be reckoned with. She strives for excellence in herself and expects excellence in her coven. How else would she expect to one day garner a position as a Symposium member? Unfortunately for Miss DeLea, the Crone discloses that helping the griffin is the only sure way to reach her coveted maximum potential. Begrudgingly, Amber helps Bastion, but she finds more than she bargains for. On the trail to Charlize are the footprints of a black witch. What a pain!

Yes, there’s definitely some dark magic happening, and not only along the storyline. I believe this story comes with a few incapacitating runes. Once I cracked open the kindle pages of this ARC, I was prevented from even shifting in my seat, the world outside the story was hidden from my view, and I had no strength to stop myself from reading to the very end of this novella. What the hex is going on here?!

Rune of the Witch is a prequel to The Other Witch Series, a new sister series in the same world as Heather G. Harris’ The Glimmer Series. Otherworldly goodness!

Amber DeLea is arguably one of the most powerful and feared witches in all of the Other side of Europe. She’s beautiful, dangerous, intelligent, and very, very alone. But she doesn’t need anybody! She’s a self-made coven mother, one of the greatest rune-casters the Other has seen in generations, and the witch everyone calls when they NEED it done right the first time. It’s good to be the queen!

But Bastion, one of, if not the, deadliest assassins in the world comes looking for her assistance, past events make Amber turn him down. It’s only with the insistence of the Crone, one of the most respected women in the witching world, that she decides she might as well. Now Amber needs to find Bastion’s daughter, even though scrying has been ineffective, figure out who is hiding the girl with powerful runes, and see if she can’t root out what might be an up-and-coming black witch. Again.

Brilliant, well-written, engaging, and fun, this prequel novella of “The Other Witch” saga brings fans of “The Other Realm” novels something they’ve been begging for for ages, an Amber Delea standalone series! Beautifully narrated, engaging, and something that simply cannot be put down/put on pause, this book is a must-listen for any Urban Fantasy reader! Enjoy!

Received as an ARC.

I am happy. An UF protagonist, who's about my age. Didn't think I'd stumble on something like this ever. And the age isn't something that's an issue or anything. It just is. This makes me smile.

This is my first book (or novella more so) in the Other Realms, and there were some things I feel as if I should already know. They weren't things that bothered me as much as things that left me with curiosity and questions. Not sure if these are knowledge you get from the earlier series in the universe or not... I'll find out eventually!

If not for my cold demanding more sleep for my body, I would've finished this way earlier. I haven't yet read many witchy books, but this one got me in its hooks. At a point it made me feel so anxious for the protagonist and where the plot would be going, I was trying to read faster. And while the plot of this story specifically was resolved, it left me interested in the continuation, the actual first book of the series, which I shall start today, since I need to!

Loved the peek into the life of a coven. And how it functions as a community. Eager to learn more about that too.

Want witches; with white, grey and black magic? Want mystical creatures and intricate social structures between them? Want a protagonist in their 40's? Want well flowing writing and a unique setting? This is for you. :)
