Introduces National Security Advisor, Condoleezza Rice, from her childhood in Birmingham, Alabama, to her amazing scholarly and musical accomplishments and involvement in foreign affairs. Simultaneous.
Summary: This is a nonfiction biography book about Condoleezza Rice. She grew up in the deep south of Alabama in a time when segregation was really present in the 60's. Being a woman, AND a woman of color, she overcame impossible odds. She attended college and began to make a name for herself. She became the 66th Secretary of State of the United States. She served under President George W. Bush. This book has a lot of pictures of the time during segregation of her being in powerful positions like the White house. My Thoughts: I'm ashamed to say that I did not know who Condoleezza Rice was before I read this book but I'm so glad that I did. She is such an impressive lady! The writing style of this picture was very simple and to the point, yet informative and interesting. I learned a lot! There were a lot of pictures that also helped me get to know her and visualize.
Classroom Usage: I would have this be part of a black history month lesson or use it during international women's day as way of inspiration. I think this woman can be a very empowering example to the students of what overcoming impossible odds and making a difference looks like.
