Chance
Jessica Tennyson has a poor excuse for a life, still in her twenties and working in a library. Too scared to live life and face rejection. She only goes out once a month to a restaurant with her best friend. When her friend cancels on her, the good-looking waiter Ben takes it on himself to entertain her.
Ben Worthington likes to play and he's about to tempt Jessica into playing a game that will help them both. If he's not careful he could end up losing his heart to the beautiful blonde.
Excerpt:
She hadn’t even read the menu yet. She closed it and looked up at him. “I really don’t have a clue. Do you have any suggestions?” It didn’t seem to matter that this wasn’t the first time that she’d eaten here. After a few minutes talking to Ben, her mind had gone completely blank.
“I’ve got a few.” There was no mistaking that grin. Ben wasn’t talking about food and Jessica’s heart picked up its pace.
“I was talking about the food.”
“So was I.” He tried to look innocent but Jessica doubted that Ben had ever been innocent in his entire life. “Do you trust me?”
The conversation had changed so quickly it took Jessica a few seconds to reply. “Excuse me?”
“I’ll take care of the food. All you have to do is enjoy it.” As he reached down to pick up the menu, his fingers brushed her hand. Jessica would have thought it was unintentional if his fingers hadn’t lingered, leaving no doubt in her mind he’d touched her deliberately.
“If you keep touching me, I’m going to forget how to breathe.” The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them. Ben grinned at her and picked up the menu.
“I’ll have to remember that.”

I didn’t hate this but it was whatever

Very short book - I'd soon get my book challenge numbers up if I read little ones like this all the time :)
However, I didn't think it was very good. I was very aware of the writing throughout, which tends to mean it felt amateurish and didn't flow naturally. Not that I could do any better, I hasten to admit!
I was squirming over the whole sex bit - not with embarrassment but by how cheap it was: round the back of a restaurant and in a churchyard...
I can see how outdoor sex, with the risk of being seen, could be thrilling and exciting for some, but only in an established relationship, not on a first meeting or one-night-stand. To me it felt cheap and dirty. I kept hoping one of them would say 'let's go to my place and get comfortable'. I'm pretty sure that if it was real life, he wouldn't have contacted her again.
Not my cup of tea, sorry.

For such a fast story, Chance is a definite page turner. Both Jessica and Ben are immediately likeable and the alternating points of view give you insight into their mutual attraction... an attraction that's obviously been growing for quite some time unbeknownst to the other. The authors writing is pitch perfect, incredibly well developed, well paced and descriptive. The banter between characters is witty and sexy. For a twenty page book, honestly I can hardly believe it myself, this was a really fun read. Perfect when you need a fast, romantic, steamy fix!

This book was nominated by me for my Babycentre Book Group book of the month choice, and it won :) It's just a short book, but I liked it. I liked the characters, and thought Ben seemed pretty damn hot too ;)
I liked the fact that Jessica let herself go and trusted Ben, letting him take her to great heights! I would like to read more of these and find out more about these dares, and see where things go for these 2.
