I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review :)

I learned a lot from this book. I’ve already resolved I will have to listen to this book several times to really understand the information. I knew different parts and pieces of this information, but the author did a great job at laying out the information in an organized and helpful way. I loved how much it focused on how we can improve our own defenses against people trying to misuse us. It was a validating and terrifying experience reading this and rehashing things that have happened to me from people with these dark triad traits.

However, I do wish there was a little more information on why people become this way. Because I have interacted with people like this, I get that going no contact is very important. However, there was an undertone of that there is no help for these people and they are forever going to hurt others. And that the only way to keep from getting hurt is cutting them out. But, simultaneously, I understand that this book was not centrally about why they are the way they are. I would have just been interested to learn more about that so that they don’t become non human to me.

On the whole, very well written and laid out. I’ve already recommended it to people, and will re-read.

Insightful and Informative

This book is a comprehensive guide based on expert opinions and research, which I appreciate. It covered topics like manipulation, narcissism, deception, and gaslighting. It is practical and can help readers understand and combat manipulation in various aspects of life. It’s also reassuring for newcomers to the subject that the guide is accessible and empowering, fostering confidence in building meaningful relationships while defending against manipulation.

This is a great and informative book!

It talks about the darker side of relationships like gaslighting, love bombing, manipulation, etc. I didn’t realize I had been in a narcissistic relationship till reading this book. Now, I’m seeing love bombing going on and I will know how to handle it better in my future relationships. I love learning about the body language too. Watch for the physical red flags as much as the psychological ones. Great book!

The first thing I need to say is that this book clearly preys on two types of people.

1. People who have been hurt and who want a reason for why. People who have been abused and want some help.

2. People who love to play victim

This is disgusting, especially the first one. There is no positive information in this book that you can't find for free, and both better written and less harmful. This book pushes the rhetoric that people suffering from trauma turn out evil and become unfixable, and that manipulative tactics and people are just an almost subtype of people and not to be considered human in any sense. It includes various pseudoscientific pop-psychology phrases, as well as teaches "body language analysis," which in itself is a pseudoscience and shouldn't be taken as gospel in any sense of the word.

The author himself has no credentials, and all sources in the book are "studies say" with just a "trust me, bro" attitude. The book many times has many formatting issues, which makes me wonder if anyone even read this over. The language usage itself is very basic, and feels no different than what a computer would spit out if you asked it to write a novel on the very topic, combined with all the misgivings an AI chatbot would likely have on the topic as well.

Overall, it encourages a paranoid state, a person who constantly looks and categorizes people they meet into these "mental illnesses" of which they might not even belong to. If you want to actually take in any of the factual information in this book, just scroll to any reputable psychology website and look up the terms the book tries to explain. You'll probably find a paragraph that sums up an entire chapter's worth of information in this book in a better and more nuanced, and applicable way.

Also, I know you wanted to mention BPD, you just said "love bomber" instead because you're a coward. You're not slick.

💭𝗠𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:

I found this book both eye-opening and empowering. The authors break down complex psychological concepts into easy-to-understand terms, making it accessible even for beginners. The sections on spotting manipulation and handling toxic individuals are particularly useful. The book could benefit from a bit more depth in certain areas, especially on body language, but overall, it’s a solid, practical guide.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹:

Highly recommended for anyone looking to understand and protect themselves from manipulative behaviors. 👍.

A Good Book For Identifying Psychological Traits

If you’re looking for insights into the techniques of psychological manipulation, you’ll find this book particularly valuable. The explanations of the main psychological traits were beneficial and delivered in a straightforward, succinct, and practical way. I found the part that talked about spotting deception and handling it effectively quite entertaining.

Has good insights

Definitely worth reading to raise self-awareness of boundary violators and circumstances to name the violation. Also good guidance on what is acceptable influence. Would have liked more on everyday social responses to violations and guidance on maintaining one’s personal safety in various situations.

Good Read

The fact that I read this book all the way through in 2 days is very telling, as someone with a short attention span. However, I wish there was a more detailed breakdown of body language clues. Other than that, this book is informative and I am inspired to embark on a journey of learning to be assertive.
