The Other Witch #2

Coven of the Witch

Rate this book
The black witches are gunning for me, but I’m ready to hit back.

Someone is trying to kill me. It’s been happening for a while, so death threats and murder attempts are getting mundane. When a rogue fire elemental throws a fireball at my head, I’m not surprised, but I’m not thrilled either.

Luckily, I currently have a live-in-protector; Bastion, the preeminent assassin of the magical world, has become my bodyguard and tormentor. The former because the coven council have paid him a princely sum to keep me alive, and the latter because he keeps strolling around in his underwear. How is a witch supposed to think with all of those muscles flexing about?

Unfortunately, thinking is rather necessary in my line of work. I can’t afford to be distracted. I’m a rune and potion mistress, and it’s going to take all of my skills to concoct an antidote to save the life of one of my witches who got led astray by the black coven. She tried to quit, but the black coven doesn’t believe in notice periods. Her life hangs in the balance and I’ll do everything I can to save her life – even consult with my sentient grimoire.

I’m ready to give the finger to the black witches and save her young life, when I get summoned to Edinburgh. My acolyte isn’t the only one who is in the black coven’s crosshairs. The Crone – my Aunt Abigay – has been targeted too.

I have to choose.

Do I save my young charge, or my aunt?

Don't miss this witchy series if you like humour, heart and a strong heroine with a slow burn, enemies to lovers, fade-to-black romance.

NOOOOO!

Cliffhangers!!!!

This book! This.Book!

What a ride, the plot thickens, the mysteries are pulling at me to second guess what will happen... my tears fell on a few occasions and I expect there to be more... I laughed out loud, I smiled, I held my breath, I grit my teeth... What an absolute rollercoaster!

Bastion, Amber, Benji, Oscar ❤️

Cover of the Witch is book two in The Other Witch sereis by Heather G. Harris.

Bastion’s job should have been done, but Amber’s life is still in danger. The Other Realm is heating up as Amber seeks out the black coven.

The magic and mysteries kept me turning the pages. We are digging deeper into the mystery of the black coven and some shocking family secrets are revealed. It’s full of twists, turns, and surprises. We do end on a cliffhanger, but the next book is out, so no waiting to find out what’s next.

The romance is a slow-burn. Amber is softening and we’re getting glimpses of her hidden and tightly wound heart. She’s hated Bastian, but we see her starting to warm up to him. All the little things Bastian is doing is showing her that she can trust and maybe love again.

I’m enjoying the magic and mystery in The Other Witch sereis. Amber is slowly changing and Bastian is a rock. I can’t wait to read on and dive deeper into the world.

Poor Amber. Every time she strikes one challenge of the list, another dozen pop up. Lucky for her she's still got Bastion at her back. And Benji--who is, by far, my favourite new character to come out of this world.

I love the growth of all the mysteries and secrets that surround Amber. One day soon, they're all going to come to a head, and I'm on tenterhooks to find out a) what they are; and b) how many mugs she's going to throw at Bastion's head when she learns them.

Be warned: the "one-more-chapter"-itis is strong with this one.

This may be the best book of the series! There were so many twists and turns (and lost sleep). The pace was relentless, with each chapter pulling me deeper into the story. And that cliffhanger! It was pure torture, leaving me desperate for the next installment.

Wow!

The Other Realm is heating up as top witch, Amber DeLea, seeks out the black coven operating under her nose.

Luckily she still has the protection of ultimate griffin assassin, Bastian, and that of her golem friend Benji, along with her father figure, Oscar. And she'll need it. She's already almost been blown up. And assassins are coming in from every corner. You'd think that now her poorly named ORAL potion is complete, she'd be safe.

She must be close, because black witches are everywhere, even among those she trusts, and worse— a shocking family secret sends her reeling.

Through it all is Bastian, someone she's hated for so long. But of all the people around her, she's learning that it's the small things that show you who you can trust and maybe love? That's a hard one for Amber, she's used to guarding her emotions, her mind, and her heart.

These are some of the best books in the Other Realm, Harris really gets into Amber's mind and under her skin. These are definite must read books, full of action and intrigue!

Yep, just as I expected. I am LOVING this series! It keeps one turning the pages with it’s magic and mysteries - with just a hint of romance to come. I’m still working to like the main character of Amber but she is softening just enough to not be totally off-putting. And, we are getting glimpses of her deeply hidden and tightly wound heart - which gives me hope the next books will be five star favorites for sure!

I had the pleasure of reading an advanced reader copy of Coven of the Witch and I could hardly put it down!

I read it the first time between September 26 and 27 and I had a work shift in between! I enjoyed it so much I read it again over the weekend.

Amber’s hunt for the black witches continues to get more serious. We learn more layers of info about several characters: Amber, Bastien, Oscar, Luna, Kassandra and Benji. Amber and Bastien have acknowledged their feelings for each other - and Amber finds a surprise friend.

Great chapter in the story; however, now I have to wait for the next story :(

Who is Amber’s Dad? What is the prophecy about Amber?

If you have not started this series yet you have some great stories ahead of you.

It’s been a tough few weeks in the real world, so this latest installment in The Other Witch series was a welcome reprieve.

Amber still is seeking out the members of the black witch coven that has been threatening her world, and her family and friends all are at risk. She (finally!) is acknowledging her attraction to Bastion, just as she’s learning to rely on him and other friends to help her in her quest. This is a real step forward for Amber, who always felt like a bit of a loner.

There are some difficult events in the story for Amber, but she also learns a bit more about herself and gets hints of a prophecy that supposedly involves her. There still are villains and plenty of mysteries left for Amber to uncover in coming books. I look forward to reading them!

Well, where to start. I love the book!, Amber is definitely one of my favourite characters. Even-though there is so much going on it seems like a "short" book I actually read it in one seating... I couldn't put it down. I really like the way relationships are moving forward, also how we are learning more of Amber, Bastion, Oscar and Luna. There are some unexpected twists and some expected ones. Heather describes Edinburgh in such a charming way that she took me back to one of my favourite cities. I hate when I have to wait for the next book...
If you haven't read this series I fully recommend it, it is funny, magical and action packed.

Heather writes stories like an artist paints a landscape. She starts with a blank canvas, slowly adding color until a beautiful field of flowers appears. The relationship between Amber and Bastion has built slowly and I love where it’s going! I can’t wait for the final picture!
In the prior books
(Glimmer, Pack, Court) Amber has been very much a loner and stiff. Heather is now painting the depth to Amber we have been sorely missing.

Nothing much really happened in this instalment of the Other series.

I missed the sarcasm and banter.

AmBam cried a lot. A few died, but she's still hunting the black Witches and their coven (including her father).

I miss Jinx and Lucy and hope they will appear in the next book.
Clearly, Bambi and Griffin could use their help!

If you haven't read the previous books in this series, STOP! Go back and read them. This book continues where the last one left off.

As this book opens, we see the heartbreaking funeral for Cindy, Meridith's familiar. Meridith is with her daughter Ria the black witch acolyte who tried to kill herself and was saved by Amber. They are currently well hidden while Amber works on a potion to cure her and looks for the other black witch in her coven.

With her potion completed Amber is looking for the black witch in her Coven, she also knows there's one in Kassandra's coven in Liverpool. She found that out because of missing hydration potions noticed by Jasmine when she healed Amber.

The first attack on Amber in this book come from a fire elemental while leaving the Spice Shoppe where she gathered more potion ingredients. Maxwell didn't know the attacker and it's assumed he was a rogue.

Amber was almost done with the potion to hopefully cure Ria, but something is missing, she consults the family grimoire, the sentient Grimmy to figure it out. She isn't going to use the black magic within the price was way too high.

Bastion comes up with a solution, she thinks it will work and it's keyed to Ria. Before she can get it approved, she gets a call the Crone, her Aunt Abigay is dying and healing runes won't stick to her.

She can't be two places at once and Oscar offers to take the potion to be approved and then to Ria. Bastion would get her to Edinburgh to be with Abigay.

Amber vows to find and get rid of the black witch coven, every last one of them. There's also a prophecy that she's been avoiding looking at, that Abigay told her she must read. She also told her that her father was deep into black magic and didn't want Amber to follow that path.

Bastion and Oscar have a secret, but her mother made them take an oath not to tell Amber.

As her quest continues Amber now has Benji, the council golem as a protector as he is immune to black magic. Between Bastion and Benji she should be safe.

More attempts on Amber's life, more black witches, interesting deals, flirty romance and so many surprises!

I can't wait for the next book in this series. Fortunately, it's not too far away.

Amber DeLea is arguably one of the most powerful and feared witches in all of the “Other” side of Europe. She’s beautiful, dangerous, intelligent, and, strangely, not so alone anymore. Does she need other people? She’s a self-made Coven Mother, one of the greatest rune-casters the Other has seen in generations, a potion MASTER, and the witch everyone calls when they NEED it done right the first time. So what’s to need?

Life in the coven is always busy. From putting out fires (both literal and figurative), engaging with other member races of Other society, and showing she is one bad witch who’s not to be trifled with, Amber’s got her hands full to be sure. But someone(s) is trying to have her killed. Would-be assassins are coming out of the woodwork, making attempt-after-attempt at her life. This is getting really inconvenient! With her “Oral Potion” done and dusted, patent filed, she should be able to get back to running her Coven, and trying to get that coveted spot on the Witches’ Council. Right? RIGHT?! Nope! It seems the Black Coven still has it out for her, and they’re starting to come out of the shadows bit-by-bit.

Thank the Goddess for Bastion… though he really should put some pants on. It’s distracting!

Between summonings to Edinburgh, the attempts on her life, and Black Witches lurking behind every shadow, what’s a badass Witch to do? Steal a golem of course! Amber’s not about to take any of this lying down, well, not yet at least. With twists and turns to make a cyclone seasick, this next volume in The Other Witch series is one for the books!

Brilliant, well-written, engaging, and fun, this second novel of “The Other Witch” saga continues to bring fans of “The Other Realm” novels something they’ve been needed for ages, an Amber Delea standalone series in gorgeous audio! Beautifully narrated, engaging, and something that simply cannot be put down/put on pause, this book is a must-listen for any Urban Fantasy reader! Enjoy!

I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Great..except the ending

I almost took off a star from the abrupt cliffhanger. It was a cr@ppy way to leave the book. Out of all The Other World Series books, I think Amber's storyline is the absolute best. It's well written and Amber is a character you can get behind. A strong yet vulnerable main female lead who also admits when she is wrong. She has such a sweet soul that she hides behind a tough exterior. Her moments with Benji make me tear up.

First, if you are thinking of starting with this series. Stop!!! Read Jinx and then Lucy's story first. I made the mistake when I read the first book. There needs to be a better time-line somewhere. Jinx's storyline breaks down The Other World very well.

Now, back to the business at hand. This second book was better than the first, and I am so excited for the next book to come. I finished this in hours, sneaking in a read here and there.

This starts off not too long after the last book. Amber is still trying to root out more black coven members, and while she does this, you see growth in her as she learns to delegate, trust, and lower her barriers. We learn a bit more about Amber's Mom and get some very shocking revelations. I don't want to say much as it might spoil the story. But twists and turns, sad happenings, and progress. The banter between Bastion and Amber here..chef's kiss.

I feel as if with her other female characters in this series, she made her main leads come across as teenagers crushing and blushing. You still get some of that with these two, but it's definitely much more mature. Lucy and Greg were a bit frustrating for me as Lucy was coming across as some school kid when dealing with Greg. And I'm normally shy, but some it was just ridiculous and kiddie.

Overall, this was great and a must read!! I may just read both books over again.

Heather's Notes
I am definitely enjoying these stories more now that Amber has sorted herself out. I have my suspicions about Bastien, Amber, and the familiar, we will see if they pan out.

I've loved everything this author has written so far so it is no surprise to me that this was just as wonderful as everything else. This is a general non spoilery review for the whole series.
The world is so rich and well developed. I loved Amber's character, her inner voice is so different from the slightly cold and unbending version we get of her in Lucy and Jinx's books, although we were beginning to see her soften as she was offered unconditional friendship from these two. Hearing what she thought of the other two and how much she valued them was everything I want to read about. I love platonic friendships in books as much as if not more than romantic relationships as it makes the world so much more believable and richer. And Bastion is every girls version of a hero, I loved the romance of these two and the adventure/mystery. I got so completely invested in the mystery and adventure itself, it was a rollercoaster with a satisfying climax, bringing together events from other books and further making this a world I love and is on my autobuy list. But to me the things that make these books stand out head and shoulders above so much other urban fantasy is the character dynamics and the 'little' details. Amber's sense of humour coming out in her mug collection for example, the little laughs, the moments of introspection and learning, and the touch of true friendship. They feel like my friends now and when I put down a book it is with a sense of loss. This author deserves to be shouted from the rooftops.

This is the third book in Amber’s story, and things are really heating up. Multiple attempts are being made on her life, and the assassin is getting closer and closer. Then the black witches make an attack that hits very close to home, and in doing so not only break Amber’s heart but also destroy her hopes for a big step up in her career. Thankfully she still has Bastion glued to her side to guard her, and soon she is able to bargain for Benji’s assistance, too. And let me say, I was thrilled to see more of Benji and see him get away from his underground confinement, out into the big world.

I don’t want to reveal anything, but there is a funeral in the book that just brought goosebumps. The vision of the funeral pyre and the pounding drums as a call to war for Amber was so powerful. She will be going after that black coven and tearing them to shreds with her bare hands! (But not in this book!)

Amber and Bastion’s relationship continues to grow and deepen, as she comes to realize that for an “enemy”, Bastion treats her better than anyone else ever has. Amber starts relaxing and letting down her guard about relationships, and we really get to know her as a person.

I absolutely can’t wait for the next book! There are secrets to be revealed, villains to be discovered and destroyed, relationships to be fulfilled, and power to be gained. Heather G. Harris can always be counted on for a wild ride!

I don't know where I should start... Hold on tight because Heather takes us for an amazing, wild journey with Amber and Bastion.
"Coven of the Witch" is 2nd book in "The Other Witch" series, so we are already involved to some intrigues and issues from "Hex of the Witch". Amber tries to run the Coven, investigates the black witches organization, applies for next Witch in the Connection Council, runs the Clinique, brews lifesaving potion for one witch in trouble and maybe sleeps sometimes.

Amber again proofs that she is a strong woman, which knows what she want, but...only in theory. Somewhere deep, deep inside of her heart she is sensitive and sometimes need a hug. The life is not easy for her recently and she is struggling to keep everything in order. I love how determinate she is to achieve the goals. Sometimes during the reading I wanted to say "Hold on, Amber! It's too much!" Luckily, she has Bastion.

Bastion shows to be more and more fluffy man with a deadly assassin skills. His feelings to Amber grows and the chemistry between them is bubbling as the potion in the cauldron.

The plot is wild. I read this book in two sittings, only because I needed to work next day and I couldn't read until 3 am. All the time something is happening, the events are running from one to another very smoothly. In the same time, we are getting some cute, flirty moments. It's so hard to put this book down.

I'm in love. It's my favorite urban fantasy book/series from years. It's carefully thought out; characters are growing from book to book; world building is detailed, but not overwhelming.

I can't wait for book 3.

How does she do it?? Absolutely every book delivers on the promise that is a Heather G Harris story. Strong found or blood family vibes, friends who help make then bury bodies, intrigue that is cleverly evolved and layered through the whole storyline. If you can only plant and nurture your imagination with one new release, then Coven Of The Witch is my recommendation for that fertile story garden.

The burgeoning relationships at the core of this series are further explored here, and of course, the crowd favourite is that between Amber and Bastion. Watching them reveal their vulnerabilities as they grow to trust each other is beautiful. I'm so glad this is a four book series because we'll get more anticipation and tension! Amber is also building her circle of friends and Benji and Kass are filling that role so well. We get humour, snark and again, growing trust. It seems Amber's growth into herself as a fully self-aware person, not just a witch, is pinned on her trusting people.

It is so easy to slip into the worlds Heather creates that even a four book series won't be long enough when it is as well constructed as this one and filled with characters who have become like close friends, as these have.

I received a free copy of this book as part of an ARC campaign.

‘A glimmer is the opposite of a trigger. A glimmer is a moment in your day that sparks a sense of joy and wellbeing.’
Coven of the Witch picks up Amber's story following the loss and troubles discovered in Hex of the Witch. She's on the hunt for a black witch.

The reason Bastion was hired to protect Amber has ended, but he's sticking with her to ensure her safety as she takes on this new challenge. Amber, who once hated Bastion, has now found comfort in his nearness, his thoughtfulness and protections. It's a good thing he's still around because danger has a way of finding Amber. The attacks are coming quickly now as she begins to investigate.

This was another great installment in Amber's series. There's loss, new friendships, a blooming romance, and great character growth. With Amber's mum having bound those who have answers, answers they want to share, but cannot, I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment (Familiar of the Witch @ 30 Nov) where I'm sure she'll find a way around their bindings and get those answers.

Oh my gosh. I can't say enough about this book and series. The stories, world, and characters are so good! But darn it, Ms. Harris, a certain section of this book had me fighting tears, in public, as I was reading while waiting for an appointment. I don't like to get that emotional, but that's how deeply involved and invested I am with this series and the characters. In this book, it seems as if Amber has several life changing decisions to make. Life changing as in - whose life to I try to save, and at what cost? The action is nearly nonstop, it's tense and exciting, but also has strong themes of burgeoning friendships and feelings, loyalty and love, which really flesh out the characters and story. There is a healthy dose of humor thrown in to alleviate some tense moments - all in all, very well done. I like to binge read, and I'm so glad that I can dive straight into the next book of this series and am crossing my fingers that there will be more stories from this world. If you like imaginative and well written fantasy with wonderful characters and terrific world building, give this book and the series, a try. Better yet, start with the Other Realm series and work your way through the spin offs before reading this one. It's time so well spent, as all of the books are wonderful, and the bonus is that they're all on KU.

Drags a little but lots of new information

4.5 stars…This story moves a bit more slowly than the author’s other books in the series but there’s a lot of information dumping going on so I think that’s why. It also reads as more of a mystery story with a lot of investigating and clues than as a suspense or action oriented format. And I love mysteries so it wasn’t too big of an adjustment.

Amber still has lots of work to do finding more black witches and she’s working on some new potions when she a call that the Crone is dying. Turns out she’s been poisoned by a black witches too but because her friend who called her didn’t mention that she didn’t have the right formulas with her. There’s nothing they can do but since the Crone’s death is near she doesn’t care about breaking an oath to Amber’s mother and gives her some important information. This sends the team racing around like the Scooby Doo gang gathering clues and thwarting attempts to kill Amber.

The climactic moment has a lot of consequences and also provides more clues. A big reveal at the end changes things and Amber and Bastion grow closer. There are still secrets, important secrets, being withheld but hopefully they will be revealed soon. I a, once again very glad I came upon these books after the series was complete so that I can move right on to the next one without waiting!

This book was soooo GOOD! At the end I was heel kicking the floor for two reasons 1) I LOVED every minute of it and 2) I'd reached The End! Sigh!
Amber, Bastion and Oscar were constantly on the move this entire story. There were bad guys popping out of the woodwork and even Benji had to come into play for this story. And Hey, Amber did get him out of the underground city! Go Amber! The interest between Amber and Bastion is moving along quite nicely, and Amber continues to uncover more about herself that she was not aware of, as well as more of her personal history.
We spent a bit more time with Amber's mom Luna - still not sure I like her all that much. But it looks like she was a busy beaver when she had all her faculties.
The series is on a great trajectory now and I can hardly wait for the next installment. Sorry Heather, I know it takes you quite a while to write a book, and we read them so quickly (like two times already)! Gotta make sure I didn't miss any critical information the first time because it was so interesting and I could not wait to turn each page. The storyline just keeps getting better and better. Get this series, it is giving all the other Other series a 'run for top billing'.

The second book in Amber’s story was just as enjoyable as the first. We got to find out a bit more of Amber’s past, which she doesn’t even know. There were also a few big shocker events that happened which I wasn’t really expecting to, and one of them made me cry, but they really added to the story and the mystery surrounding just who the black witches are and how far they’ll go.

We also learnt more about Bastion and I do feel like this isn’t just Amber’s story, but Bastion’s too and I’m really enjoying that.

I really enjoy Heather’s writing and find that I can immerse myself fully in the story and characters she writes. Amber is a very different character to both Jinx and Lucy but I’m finding myself liking her more and more as her story is going along. She has many different layers to her which I feel we’re slowly revealing as reading and she’s fast becoming my favourite character of The Other so far.

Very much looking forward to the third book. The author doesn’t leave us with a cliffhanger at the end, but she definitely does leave us with more unanswered questions and mystery than there was at the beginning of the book and that’s keeping me engaged and excited for book 3. A fabulous, exciting and engaging 5 star read.

So good! I swear I won’t complain about the cliffhanger ending

I won’t mention the cliffhanger ending. Not the fact that it ends in an “Oh crap” moment. Not that Heather is a freakin T E A S E for the entire last chapter, nor the fact that I’m so frustrated right now that I’d have thrown this across the room if it had been an actual book instead of my Kindle. Noooo, not gonna mention any of that.

Y’all, this was a great, solid, awesome story until she dumps us on our bums at the end. It has all of our favorite characters doing our favorite things. Lots and lots of tension, near-death experiences, potions, mysteries, explosions, and one notable meeting with the ogre king.

I mean, I was racing through it as best as I could, what with needing to work and sleep and stuff. But man, the story was intense! If you liked the first book, I guarantee you’ll LOVE this second one. Like, a solid money-back guarantee. Except for the last chapter. I will not refund your money if you’re as unhappy as I am at the ending. In fact, I don’t even want to talk about it. See? This is me shutting up about the %+^#?! cliffhanger ending.

Mostly because I’m going to get started on book 3 in about 2 seconds…

Yep, Ms Harris went there. Not only did she go there but she even brought up how weird it was and wondered whether Amber’s mom would approve or not. I am not a reader who likes kinks that run too dark. Unlike Amber, I do yuck your yum after a certain point. The ONLY thing that saves me from being completely turned off of Amber and Bastion as a couple is that it seemed like Bastion really only ever came around Amber when Amber’s feelings/emotions seemed like Bastion was needed urgently. It’s still a little thin, honestly, but I’m going with it. I’m not buying the mental dance Amber is having with herself about how permanent their relationship is, because I am sorry to inform her the entire thing was decided once they got dirty.

Why is this ever a thing? Honestly, I don’t feel like in 2024 there should ever be a book that glamorizes a relationship between a man and a woman where the man knew/met/had any sort of interaction with her when she was a child. While I do believe the author did as good a job as anyone could to explain just how little Bastion and Amber were around each other until the past couple of months, the creepy factor is still there for me and it messes with me a bit.

Now that I have beaten that point to death, this was a very well done story and continues to intrigue me.

4.5 but rounding up. I again enjoyed the world of the Other series, there are some wonderful characters in here and even with a large cast everyone felt unique - though as I was listening to the audiobook there were a few times where I got a bit lost knowing who was speaking (Bastion and Oscar mainly)

This is such an easy book to read/listen to, and there is always something new going on, several story threads weaving together. My only personal disappointment was in the climax, it might just be because I'm a sucker for big fights with the bad guy, and this one was a bit lack luster for me. I thought it needed to be longer and the stakes a bit higher. Without going into spoilers I thought the Oh No! moment was resolved a bit to easily which meant it didn't have the gut wrenching impact I felt it should and things were just brushed off. (and this is where it lost half a star for me), but overall I still had fun and will be continuing in the series.

I'm also enjoying the slow burn romance being just that, slow burn. Especially as each book only take place over a few days, it feels more realistic to have this build up. And who does want someone buying them spicy fantasy novels as a way of flirting.

Amber's story continues directly from the first novel, slipping into it is like catching up on a close friend, although to be fair I stay in touch with these strong females of The Other Realm, far more often than with my real life friends due to real life commitments.

Amber DeLea is on a mission, find out who the black witch is and put an end to the back coven. Bastion is still protecting her, and feeding her romance book habit with surprise new books! (Heather includes said books general blurb, which is another intriguing aspect, as I myself would like to read those books) Amber is slowly realising that there is more to Bastion than his job, but there are still secrets between them, some that even Oscar knows of that Amber needs to unravel to find out about who she is as a person and a witch.

Before she can Amber gets called back to Edinburgh, and almost before she has time to breathe Amber and Bastion with the help of Benji the golden are searching not just for members of the black coven, but also for a murderer.
