Thiis a cute story of a somewhat snarky vampire, Lee, who is at the beach to check out a “haunted” lighthouse for his cousin who writes books about haunted tourist attractions. Since said cousin is footing the bill for the vacation, this works well. Lee can quickly get pictures and info of the lighthouse and then spend time on the beach (and no, he doesn’t sparkle) and sampling a different man every night.

What happens instead is that he meets up with the very adorable desk clerk, Jayden. Jayden, who doesn’t fall under Lee’s thrall because he is a hedge witch. Not a practicing witch much, but he is one nonetheless. After a steamy one off and then a very awkward after, Lee is a little irked at himself.

I read this right after reading Herbal Remedy, the story of Jayden’s brother, and I’m thinking it should go the other way round in order. Jayden’s brother is only present for a minute so I don’t think you need to read one to understand the other. Jayden seemed flightier in Herbal Remedy than he does here and I had a question about Jared from that story, but that’s neither here nor there.

This is a cute story with a non-regulation vampire, a crabby cousin who really came across as not as bad as Lee thinks, a vampire who depends on his powers and not his personality for some of it and a hedge witch who just might be the one to make it all come together.

Though there's no need to read these stories in any certain order (the other being Megan Derr's Herbal Remedy), they are connected. The common denominator are two of the main characters. In this story, it is Jayden, who is the brother of the narrator of Megan Derr's story. I happened to read Megan's story first, so I found that I knew quite a bit about Jayden before I got to read his story. In Megan's story we see quite a bit of Jayden and his importance in Jordan's life, so I had a pretty good handle on his character. Though… it's interesting, and this one aspect played out well in the order I read the stories. From Jordan, I got one characterization of Jayden and though it was admittedly multifaceted because he's an important character to him, actually getting to know Jayden firsthand from this story completed his character in the same way you'd get to know someone through their sibling only to see later that you only understood them through the lens of sibling affection and at the same time, frustration :)

Lee probably felt similarly towards Jordan, when he meets him in this story just because he's heard about him through Jayden. The two meet at a sunny beach hotel. Lee had planned his vacation to the beach for some well-earned rest. It might seem strange for a vampire to vacation at the beach, but all Lee wants is some relaxation and a new guy to share his hotel room with each night. So his fixation on one man alone surprises him.

Jayden works at the hotel desk and checks in Lee when he arrives. The two share a flirtation that baffles Lee a bit. Jayden seems to be reacting strangely to his vampire-seduction mojo, but if Jayden is immune then maybe he's really interested in him. He still has a job to do though. He wouldn't have met Jayden at all if his cousin wasn't laid up with a broken ankle. Astor is researching the local lighthouse (which is rumored to be haunted) for his next book on hauntings. If he hadn't agreed to do the research for him since he was laid up, then Lee wouldn't be staying in such a swanky beach-front hotel, and therefore wouldn't have had the chance to meet the lovely Jayden.

The best part about this story is that Sasha Miller has thrown away all the unofficial vampire rules and created an interesting, rather mundane vampire. For someone like myself who prefers the Wild Bill sort of vamp (though Wild Bill could never be called mundane!), I really enjoyed getting to know Lee. He's got a bit of a shaky moral compass, though he's a genuinely good guy. And I liked the couple that Jayden and Lee make.

Second, this is really a nice beach read. Not that it's about a beach (duh), but because it's really about a vacation fling, and those are always fun to read about. The warm weather and long evenings, the lack of stress, and… the beach. It's about appreciating the day and not worrying about tomorrow. That made this story fun to read. Jayden and Lee enjoy each other, have lots of sex and because they aren't worried about the future, they allow themselves to be playful. One of my favorite scenes is when they go to do Astor's research at the lighthouse and make fun of all the ghost stuff. It's light and sweet.

The story does evolve, towards the end, as they start having real feelings and thinking about what happens next. I appreciated having a solid Happy for Now ending with a real plan going forward for their relationship rather than an unreal HEA.

This is definitely best read as part of a pair, but mostly because the stories are both good and go well together than needing to be read together. You could enjoy either of them separately if you wished.

It was a cute overall story with not a whole lot of plot outside of two guys meeting while one is on vacation. It was a nice start to what could be a better long story. There is a paranormal element that is briefly touched on.

This was a cute little story with an interesting take on vampires. Lee gets upgraded to a nicer hotel in exchange for helping out his cousin, and when he checks in sees super-cute receptionist Jayden. He tries to give him a little push of vamp power to convince him to come to his room, but it doesn't seem to work. Oh well, it's the beach, hotties galore. However Jayden shows up and is much more aggressive than Lee expected, but he's not one to look a gift horse in the mouth and they are soon heating up the sheets. The next morning when he plans to have a little sip of Jayden, Jayden calls him out for being a vampire and admits to being a hedge witch. Lee's mother always warned him about witches, so he reacts rather badly, and Jayden leaves. Lee feels badly after and manages to get the nerve up to apologise and they spend time together for the rest of his vacation.

So there's not a lot of conflict here, and the misunderstanding, or awkward moment if you will, is handled the very next day so it's not protracted. I just liked both guys a great deal. They are pretty young, early twenties and that comes across. Lee is a vampire, but he eats food and lays in the sun and enjoys the beach. So that was kind of fun to see a vamp who is pretty much normal except he needs to drink blood every few days. Descriptions of the beach resort and haunted lighthouse added a nice background to the story and their shyness as they danced around whether they wanted to try a long distance relationship was sweet and fit well with their ages.

It was kind of nice not to have a character with some traumatic relationship history holding them back, or some big secret, just young guys getting to know each other. The sex was steamy hot and the whole story left me with a good feeling after. My only beef is that I wanted to see them work it out. They live 2.5 hours apart and I was hoping that I'd see one of them decide to move and form a more settled relationship, but I would still recommend it.

I understand this is a partner book to Herbal Remedy by Megan Derr (also reviewed today) as Jayden's brother Jordan makes a brief appearance in this book, but beyond a few paragraphs as he drops off some keys, you don't need to read that one to enjoy this one. Although I'll definitely be checking it out as Jayden doesn't really use his witchy powers and I was curious about what they involved.

What I like in this story
* the absence of the usual vampire cliché... I like original stories and this one is original, because the vampire (Lee) is not what you may think of a vampire.
* it's very short, I read it in two hours, but it was enough to know the MCs and fall in love. Lee is insecure, cute, funny... Jayden is mysterious (yep, not the vampire in this story is the mysterious guy!), lovely, and know what he want... Both quick love story was cute!

What made me take out a couple of stars from my final rating
* nothing really happened... the reason why Lee was in Jayden's city never was explained in deep (and certainly not explained if there is or not a ghost)
* I like when a story (even a short one) give me a lot of details... I know absolutely nothing about vampires, as when I start to read it. Lee is the only narrator, but I really think he could give more info about his nature to the readers

Not the strong HEA type romance like Herbal Remedy by Megan Derr but it showed more of how the MCs develop their relationships. They were somewhat bland to me despite knowing Jayden from the companion book.

Here I finally learned how Jayden made a living This book also probably happened before Herbal Remedy by Megan Derr

It was an easy read with more HFN than HEA. Just an ok read for me though.

The fact Jayden was immune to Lee's power didn't change the fact he tried to use it to 1. get him to sleep with him, and 2. bite him. And apparently that's all just dandy. What's with all the hand-wavey rape/dubious consent stories today?

Not badly written, just a little boring. And some continuity stuff the editor missed. (Using a condom to give a blow job would mean Jayden's mouth should taste of LATEX not SEMEN. Unless he had a really defective condom.)

This is a story about Lee, a vampire, who does his cousin Astor a favor by going and checking out a haunted lighthouse. Astor writes books about haunted places and Lee figures he can make this into a vacation. Lee meets Jayden at the hotel he’s staying at, Jayden works there as a desk clerk. He takes a liking to Jayden and asks him what time he gets off to which Jayden replies “I don’t do room visits”. I knew then I was going to really like this story.

Lee is a vamp that can go out in the daylight, loves the beach and the sun and tries to have a different man every night…until he meets Jayden. He tries to put Jayden under his spell so he can feed and doesn’t understand why he can’t, until he learns from Jayden that he is a Hedge Witch which Lee knows nothing about.

This is a cute little story perfect for some light reading. There is one steamy sex scene early on that had me thinking this was going to be a book with nothing but sex but I’m happy to say it’s not. The MC’s are great, the little I knew about Lee’s cousin Astor had me chuckling and wishing there was more of him. This is the second book in a series I hadn’t read the first and you don’t really need to this one stands alone quite nicely but I wish I had read it, this one was just too cute!

A very laid back paranormal love story. Nothing really exciting happened, just two people meeting and hanging out. It's kinda refreshing. This is very nice to read when you need a break from books with heavy or serious content.

Lee and Jordon were interesting characters to get to know. I liked the pace their relationship took to develop and Lee's shyness and Jordon's confidence made this a fun read.

Great little short, very nice that it's kind of a completely different world; just like ours but with a completely open, no big deal supernatural element
