Mahadevi Verma (26 March 1907 – 11 September 1987), also spelled Mahadevi Varma in her English collections, was best known as an outstanding Hindi poet, and was a freedom fighter, woman's activist and educationist from India. She is widely regarded as the "modern Meera".[1] She was a major poet of the Chhayavaad generation, a period of romanticism in Modern Hindi poetry ranging from 1914–1938.[2] With the passage of time, her limited but outstanding prose has been recognised as unique in Hindi literature. She was a prominent poet in Hindi Kavi sammelans (Gatherings of poets).

She was the Principal, and then the Vice-Chancellor of Prayag Mahila Vidyapeeth, a woman's residential college in Allahabad. She was awarded India's highest literary award, for lifetime achievement, the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 1979, followed by the Jnanpith Award in 1982.[3] She was the recipient of the Padma Bhushan in 1956[4] and the Padma Vibhushan in 1988, India's third and second highest civilian awards respectively.

A really small book where authors tells us about her pets and how animals returns your love with their own. This book also reminds me of my school days as few of stories were part of my curriculum.

A lovely read.

This collection of tales is about the authors family which consists of Neelkanth mor, Gillu gilahri, Sona hiran, Durmukh khargosh, Gaura gaay, Neelu kutta, Nikki nevla, Rosie kutiya, Rani horse .... and Himani, Hemant-Basant.. the other pets.
Heart warming tales of the thoughtfulness, love and emotions reciprocated with all these pets family members. Yes they are all about wild life, but there is a significant difference in each individual story and the nature of every character.
A must read for all pet lovers... Must read even for others!

I would like to be partial to her because she is my favorite writer and the only reason behind my studying Sanskrit. This book is a beautiful sketch of the life of people and animals who she was close to. People who have not read her are definitely missing something.

For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to have a zoo for a house. From nurturing a baby snake in a sack in the garage to stealing rabbits from a farm and saving eels from the cooking pot by keeping them in empty Horlicks jars; the list is endless

I remember weeping copius tears when one of the school dogs caught rabies and passed on. Another time, I missed lunch to dig a grave for a dead sparrow I found on the path. Even this day, nothing gives me more happiness than watching the squirrels run around my balcony.

Nature provides us with the best companions we could ever ask for, loyal and without any expectations. And yet, we look at them as something to be dominated or enslaved. The fact that they don't speak the same language doesn't mean they don't speak at all. We only need to learn the signs.

My Family by Mahadevi Varma (translated by Ruth Vanita) is perfect if you're one who seeks solace in nature. Varma has a way of describing each animal that shows them in individual light, highlighting each of their quirks and personalities.

Her affection for the creatures that comprise her household is very apparent. It's easy to see and believe how they were, in fact, her family, holding the utmost place in her heart.

I wish we could go back to the time when the population boom hadn't happened and the concrete jungle didn't take over. What I'd have given to have a farm with an abundance of animals frolicking around. Or to even take a walk in the woods and to see them in their natural habitat. Alas, that seems like a far-fetched dream.

Thanks to Mahadevi Varma for having written this timeless piece that we can visit another time through these pages at least.

My family by Mahadevi Varma, translated by Ruth Vanita
A beautiful collection which made me relive my Hindi lessons in school and the emotions I felt.
And special mention to Ruth Vanita because the emotions were exactly the same I felt in school.
The tender emotions we feel towards animals is complete and all encompassing. They don’t need to talk like humans their actions and their gentle presence is enough.
I’m glad such a book by Mahadevi Varma ji has been translated . As kids we have learnt about Neelkanth and Gilu but we also meet her other animal companions each of their own individualistic character which shape her thoughts.
Every animal has its own personality akin to humans and a lot to be learnt from - for both love and living our best. A nice introduction by the translator talks about the authors life was far from incomplete it was frequented by animal visitors and encircled by their loveliness.
Reading Neelkanth was hard - this lesson took a long time to complete in school -
We are enamoured by the peacocks beauty and his iridescence and the gentle companionship with his mate Radha. He’s a fierce protector of the aviary but also considerate and protects the small animals . He feels human .
Where there’s human tendencies involved , there is jealousy involved -Khubja comes to play.
Next comes gilu - cute and endearing found under the golden blossoms - here to take your food and your heart .
Again their actions mean a lot - a love undefined by human standards.
Then comes sona the doe , durmukh the rabbit , gaura the cow, Neelu the dog and an assortments of a horse, mongoose and a dog .
The common theme being their funny and endearing actions and the impact they left on her life. Of course the animals involve their own pitfalls and idiosyncrasies.
Like durmukh the rabbit intent on destruction and death.
There’s only lessons to be learnt here- from the past and to the future
However small their existence was their presence is unparalleled. Their deaths imminent and scarring.
Animals are surrounded with boundless love and charming demeanour - it’s not only them but Mahadevi Varma who cares for them in her own ways.
Because it’s her family.
Her childhood to death is filled with only beauty .
Thanks for saving all those animals.

Animals have saved me today. Here and now.

Mahadevi Verma’s Mera Parivaar, contrary to what its title may lead one to believe, is not about the poet’s human family but about the animals that formed her ‘family’. These are brief essays, each chronicling an animal that became part of her household for some time: whether the fourteen years or so of a dog’s lifetime, or the relatively short span of two years that a squirrel lives. A peacock named Neelkanth, a squirrel named Gillu. A rabbit, a mongoose, a pony, a deer, a dog: these are some of the creatures that Verma writes about in this slim memoir.

Each essay covers the animal’s life, from how it came into Mahadevi Verma’s household, and up to its death—and in between, about the animal’s nature, its interactions with Ms Verma and the others in her household (and her school, which seems to have been contiguous with her household) as well as with the other animals that happened to be in residence at the time.

Ms Verma has a way of describing each animal that brings it forth very vividly. How it looked, of course (the poet in Ms Verma shines through in descriptions like this one, where she describes the heifer Gaura: “… भीतर की लालिमा की झलक देते हुए कमल की दो अधखुली पंखुड़ियों जैसे कान...”), but also in other ways. For instance, a very precise, almost scientific attention to detail comes through when she describes the appearance of the half Alsatian-half Bhutia dog, Neelu.

Ms Verma’s affection for the creatures that formed part of her household is very apparent, perhaps more so when the creature itself seems far from lovable. The courageous peacock Neelkanth, the playful squirrel Gillu or the staunchly loyal dog Neelu come across as easy to like, but when her affection and acceptance is extended to even an unlovable creature like the belligerent, violent rabbit Durmukh, one cannot help respect the author even more.

Mera Parivaar today would come across as dated to many, given the fact that keeping wild animals like peafowl or deer or rabbits is illegal or at least frowned upon. But Ms Verma’s age was a different one, and she does a good job of paying tribute not just to her animal friends, but to that era too. (Incidentally, both the introduction as well as the last chapter of the book hark back to Ms Verma’s childhood, and her interactions with animals at this stage; they were my favourite parts of the book).

It is a sub-100 pager book of 7 true stories, but will take you down memory lane of childhood and school days. Gaura, Sona, Gillu were our characters from childhood and even till today the stories are so alive in memory. This is a gentle reminder that good literature never dies. It just gets better and more purposeful with time.

Cute, funny, poignant, brilliant.

An account of the pets the author had through her life. Will connect instantaneously with anyone who has had a animal companion. Thoroughly enjoyable.

PS- Hindi can be on the heavier side.

With the mere mention of the word family, of course our immediate family comes to the mind. But for the ones who have pets, they indeed become very much a part of the family. Such was the family of the Indian classical author Mahadevi Verma. She has narrated this pet family saga from her childhood times quite gently. If you think that pets are cute, & hence you want them, it's not so simple in reality. And Mrs. Mahadevi has shown this indirectly in her writing. In every story of hers in the book, there is beauty and there is gloom. There is heart and there is heartbreak. Once you read it, you will realize that if you choose to expand your family from human to nature, it does have happiness, but it also has sorrow. Because after all, it's nature in its raw course. And if you disturb the course, there are bound to be repercussions. To lose yourself in the author's memories and to feel her happiness and sadness, please do read this book.

I had no idea who Mahadevi Verma was. Which shows just how bad my reading is when it comes to translations from Indian languages.

But this is the sweetest book. An animal lover’s delight. I felt the language suffered a bit in the translation, but Mahadevi Verma’s enduring love for animals shines through. What would I not give to a squirrel hop on my shoulders? Or a peacock that dances for me? Such are the whimsical adorable characters that adorn this book.

No one can come closer to Mahadevi Verma in terms of empathy. My love for her writing started when I read about "Bhaktin". Her descriptive writing is so strong that it etches the character in your mind forever.
Mera Parivar is a collection of very short stories and it can be compared with the box of spices, where every spice has its own characteristic and role.
All time favourite.
