Award winning author Jenifer LeClair delivers a gripping novel set against the remote and beautiful backdrop of the Maine coast. Homicide detective Brie Beaumont is back, sailing aboard the Maine Wind in another thrilling Windjammer Mystery.
In "Danger Sector" Brie and the crew of the Maine Wind sail to Sentinel Island to help repair an old lighthouse whose previous owner died under mysterious circumstances. When Brie discovers that an artist and prominent member of the community has gone missing, she feels compelled to investigate. Drawn into the mysterious web of an island cabal and the pages of a secret journal, Brie is soon caught up in an undercurrent of broken dreams and hidden secrets. Using her keen investigative skills, she uncovers a mystery whose roots stretch back three decades, encompassing shadowy connections to the black market art world, an illegal adoption, and a tragic love story. As a nor'easter bears down on the island, the action accelerates to a bone-chilling climax in which Brie will pit herself against the fury of a ruthless killer.

This was a really good book. It held my interest to the end even though I guessed who the murderer was about halfway through. The Windjammer series will be of particular interest to those who have sailed on a Maine Windjammer and enjoyed the islands in Penobscot Bay.
I first came upon author Jenifer LeClair at an annual art fair in Afton, MN a few years ago and purchased the first in her Windjammer series, “ Rigged for Murder.” I was intrigued by the book because: 1) I enjoy a good, clean mystery; and 2) my husband and I are avid sailors and sailing plays a big part in these books.
As much as I liked “Rigged” and vowed to read more, for whatever reason, it didn’t happen (perhaps because my list of “want to reads” exceeded my free time).
This fall I happened upon the author at the Red Wing Art Festival and could not leave without purchasing the second in the series, “Danger Sector.”
I thoroughly enjoyed the read. It was nice to reconnect with protagonist Brie Beaumont and Captain John, and to be reintroduced to sailing once again along the East Coast aboard Maine Wind. I found life and the various idiosyncrasies of the “islanders” quite fascinating.
I liked the pace of the book. It was slow (in a good way) and methodical like police detective work is and culminated in a very exciting, suspenseful conclusion. It became a definite page turner and hard to put down at times. In the end, I made a promise to myself to not let so much time pass before reading book #3 and I aim to keep that promise.
While I thought the book started slow, by the end I couldn’t put it down. Without the need for violence, LeClaire weaves a good murder mystery. This one did leave a couple of things that were never addressed and I would have liked to know a few of the characters better, but it did not detract from the story. If you are looking for new series, I would recommend the Wind Jammer series Each book builds on the previous one, so start with Rigged for Murder, learn about the main characters and enjoy as LeClaire becomes a better writer.
Atmospheric, descriptive of the Maine island & coast. Another great read from Jenifer LeClair. I've read a couple of her other Windjammer mysteries (read this out of order--but still worthwhile). Always a good mystery & her writing has improved as the series continues. Highly recommend to anyone who likes summer on an island!
Great murder mystery! This is the story of Brie, a detective on leave from the Minneapolis police department, who joins the seasonal crew of the Maine Wind. When the crew goes ashore an island to help remodel the home of a friend of the captain, mystery ensues. The characters are interesting, and the plot has interesting twists and turns. Can't wait to read the next book in this series!
The second book in this series is almost better than the first! The characters are well developed, the plot moves along beautifully, and the descriptions of life aboard a windjammer are so detailed that one can almost taste George's beef stew and blueberry cobbler. I will continue to enjoy this series.
3 1/2 stars. A good mystery with well-developed characters that delivers plenty of twists. The author is also able to convey the beauty of sailing on a ship and the ever changing nature of the ocean on the Maine coast. You don't have to be a sea-lover to enjoy this well-paced and plotted story, but you might become one at the end.
There's just something about this series that draws me in. Plenty of characters to keep me guessing until the end. Though I do hope the next one doesn't have a nor-easter blowing in. I know it adds to the ambiance, but shouldn't be used in every story.
This continuing story kept my attention (even though I did not find much time to read while we were in Roanoke). Now on to Book #3 of the Windjammer Mystery Series.
The last place you would expect to find a Minneapolis Police Detective on leave is working aboard a sailing ship but that Is exactly what Brie Beaumont is doing. The Maine Wind is a working ship owned by Captain John DeLuc. Brie and John are very attracted to each other but Brie is still uncertain what the future holds for her and is unwilling to make a commitment to John on a personal level or to the ship as a permanent job.
Brie left the police department after her partner was killed and she felt she needed some distance from police work but when the ship makes a stop on Sentinel Island to help John’s friend repair an old lighthouse Brie is immediately caught up in a mystery surrounding the lighthouse and the small island.
Amanda Whitcombe is an artist, a prominent member of the Sentinel Island community and a good friend of Ben, the owner of the lighthouse. Amanda has disappeared and when Brie finds her cottage unlocked she investigates and some clues lead Brie to believe that Amanda did not leave voluntarily.
Ben inherited the lighthouse when the previous owner died after an accident at the lighthouse. The previous owner of the lighthouse was also a good friend of Amanda’s. When John and Brie accidentally discover an old journal hidden in the lighthouse, belonging to the previous owner, the two decide there are mysterious happenings on the island that might bring danger to Ben as well as Brie, John and the crew of The Maine Wind.
Danger Sector is a good mystery. The descriptions of the scenery around Sentinel Island and the food served by the cook on The Maine Wind makes the reader want to experience a trip by sailing ship although life aboard the ship is anything but easy.
This is the second book in The Windjammer Mystery series. Rigged for Murder is the first in the series and both are recommended.
I took this book along on a Pacific cruise on the coast of California last week. As the ship gently rocked, I delved into book two of LeClair's Windjammer mystery series. In this story, the captain takes the 'Maine Wind' to an island where his friend Ben is living in a lighthouse cottage, which he has inherited after his friend Harold died from a fall down the lighthouse stairs. They soon learn that Ben's artist friend and neighbor Amanda has disappeared. Brie Beaumont's detective radar kicks in when she visits the woman's home and sees possible evidence of murder. Brie digs into the woman's history and comes up with several suspects to consider, so the story keeps the reader guessing till the satisfying end. Along the way, the romance between the captain and Brie progresses with a bumpy patch or two and George, the ship's cook, creates more delicious-sounding meals that have the reader drooling on the pages. I'm looking forward to book three now!
Minneapolis homicide detective, Brie Beaumont answers the call of the sea after a severe trauma on the job. The call takes her to Maine as a crew member of "Maine Wind" a wonderful Windjammer sailing ship.
Everything is calming down and Brie is finding serenity, that is, until the ship heads over to Sentinel Island to help the Captain's buddy fix up his lighthouse.
Soon Brie finds herself entwined in a missing persons case, which her detective senses tell her may be a murder case.
This novel was well-written, fast paced, mystery filled with characters that seem realistic and complex. I loved the first novel in this series and am glad I read the second. Now, I will go and see if there is a third or more.
I enjoyed this mystery by Jenifer LeClair even more than the first one. I loved the setting on the island with the lighthouse. Every time LeClair mentioned the views of the ocean from the island I thought of being by the ocean in Northern Ireland. LeClair captured very well how spectacular an ocean view is. This mystery kept me guessing as well. I was not sure who the killer was. I am looking forward to reading the next two books in the series.
A workmanlike mystery. It doesn't stand out as a great mystery. I read it because of my love of the Maine coast. The heroine is a former detective who now spends the summer on a windjammer sailing the coast. Mysteries abound. This book was better than the first in the series, but I love the setting, the quirky characters, and descriptions of the lavish meals made by the cook George.
Pretty good mystery. I liked the main character a lot. Overall, I enjoyed this read and would read another by this author. I think she is still growing as a writer and some parts of the writing felt forced.
Book #2 in the series and I am enjoying this one. I think the plot and storyline are a bit more developed and I am enjoying watching the two main characters in the book as their relationship blossoms. Nice summer read.
