Lisa Toney is a courageous and bold woman of God. She lives life to the fullest and empowers all those she encounters to dream big with God.
The City of Angels is where she hangs her hat. Her dream super power is a flying minivan so that she could instantly transport her family over L.A. traffic.
Lisa brings a message of hope, humor, and authentic faith. Lisa is a teaching pastor at Purpose Church in California and also a Voice for Women of Faith and Aspire Women. She loves to speak about and share the brilliance and beauty of Scripture. Lisa has a degree in Communications from Taylor University and an M.Div degree from Fuller Theological Seminary.
One brave man dared to marry her and they have four little people in their home that leave her excited for quiet and clean things some day. Until that day, she relishes those sweet, sloppy, and LOUD moments.
A little bit of coffee, dark chocolate, and a whole lot of Jesus get her through each day.
Toney does a good job with this book. Written from a Christian perspective, she is a pastor, this book is not heavy on hard to understand theological terms. This book is written for the "average" person to understand. Toney also ties in personal stories, as illustrations, this helps the reader to feel more connected. This is not just a book written by someone who has studied the topic, but as someone who has experienced it as well, which gives Toney more credibility.
*I independently bought this book and am receiving nothing for my review.
This is an excellent book on living up to your God-given potential. Using the basis of Proverbs 11:28, Toney explores what it means to be righteous, concentrating on having right relationships. This is a practical book with good suggestions, tools, and discussion questions after each chapter. I received an ARC for the publisher for the purpose of this review. I loved this book as much as I loved the Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. Lisa writes and offers such practical wisdom in helping us to become and live the lives that Jesus created and intended us to live. I love the way that this book is so easy to identify with. Chapter 4 is my favorite on Splinters. I am a mom who has lost a son as a result of a drunk driver. This event caused major splinters in my heart. Lisa's writing is done so beautifully as she reminds us that Jesus is able to remove those splinters. She writes about the carpenter, "For Jesus, wood was something to be shaped. He measured it, sawed it, scraped it, chopped it, sanded it, pounded it, and transformed it. He took raw material and fashioned it into something useful and beautiful." Those words were truly music to my ears and also comfort to my heart. I found myself wanting to read more after each chapter. This book truly is the best that I've read it quite awhile. I would love to see a video series and small group study books to go along with Lisa's book. I see the awesome potential that this book has to change lives. Great Book!
i received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. I really liked this book. It's very delightful and it's written very well. Thrive: live like you matter, made me rethink my past and especially what i should have done in matter of non healthy friendship that i haven't done. it would have saved me a lot of trouble, but maybe i wasn't yet in the righteous mind set to accept that what i was doing was wrong. I will pass this book to my loved ones especially the young ones of the family, hoping that this can help them a little to avoid my mistakes. Thriving as God intended.
As I was reading the first chapter of this book, I could already tell I was going to love it and that it was a great devotion book. The only thing, I thought, that would make it even better was if it had discussion questions at the end of each chapter so that it could be used in a small group setting. Well, when I came to the end of the chapter, there they were, discussion questions! A perfect book!
Talks about honesty, integrity, boundaries, forgiveness, goals, fears, injustice, hope, and excellence. There are loads of analogies, so if you're someone that likes word pictures, this is the book for you! Excellent questions at the end of each chapter that are really thought provoking, and deep.
This book was very easy to read and understand. The author gives numerous examples from her life to illustrate the blessings of living in righteousness rather than trusting in things that fade. This is a short book, great for encouragement in striving for excellence in all things.
This book would be an excellent group study. So often we struggle with doing and saying not only what is right, but when and for who. Caring for ourselves an knowing when it's right for us and in Gods timing is important. Thank you.
