Did you know that Ruth was more than likely alive during the Trojan War or that Esther's son (either in blood or by marriage) was the king who helped fund the rebuilding of the wall at Jerusalem, or that only a few years after the death of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra that John the Baptist was born? These interesting history lessons are chronologically laid out in this easy to read text book. This home school history curriculium is a great way to teach and learn history in a classical approach to education. Starting at Creation all the way through to the birth and accension of Jesus Christ this book takes the reader on a journey that brings to life historical figures like Alexander the Great, Homer, Hannibal, and many more lining them up in a timeline rooted in biblical history.

One more time through Volume 1 of The Mystery of History. Actually, I’m not really sure how many times I’ve been through the book. This is my favorite go to history curriculum for homeschooling. There is so much information (which I guess can also be a little of a con as there are a few dry parts-but hey, that’s history). I really appreciate the facts versus the storytelling approach. (I always think I’m going to love The Story of the World series until I have to start explaining what is a story and what is real🙄). And though man those Bible prophets are a lot, I love that the Biblical history is woven right in chronologically. On to Volume 2!

Good overall. I like the chronological and Christian approach this book takes. The way the author wrote/commented on aspects of biblical history was not my favorite.

I could cry trying to explain how much I love, and am thankful for, this book. I bought it for my three elementary children, and we went through it a school year. Honestly, I'm such a slacker mom that we only read aloud the lessons and didn't even DO the fantastic activities and tests and quizzes. But by the end of the year, I understood not only Judah and Israel and why they're not synonymous, but also so much more: What the Great Protagonist was up to throughout the first 4000 years of this beautiful earth.
Thank you, Linda Lacour Hobar.
We're going through Volume 2 this year, and hopefully by the time we're ready for it (fall 2015) there will be a Volume 4! My big plan is to go through it again starting at the beginning after that. My children will be middle schoolers and I plan to require a little more of them in the way of quizzes and things.
But I just want to say: Without doing ANYTHING but reading the lessons aloud, you would not BELIEVE how much my children grasp the portions of history we've gone through! Whoa!!

More like 3.5 stars... "I liked it well enough"

I appreciate the covering world history and not just Egypt or what was happening in the Middle East, etc. We may disagree on some things theologically but my girls were old enough to have have some discussion over this. We also used this because we liked her stance on Creation (we are literal six day, young earth people) and that was a good jumping point for us. There may even be points that we disagree with in her interpretation of history, so it causes us to go deeper in places (though that doesn't happen much in this volume as it does in other volumes)

The companion guide that comes with it is helpful to add depth across the grades. Some book recommendations are better than others, and I supplement some recommendations from a couple of other history curricula.

I don't think there is a perfect history curriculum but it works. We would prefer a more reformed perspective, but again, not a huge deal as my girls are able to discuss things a bit more.

I read this with my first grader for her homeschool. There were a few things I disagreed with theologically, that I needed to edit on the fly and I had to cover up quite a few images of Jesus towards the end (2nd commandment violations), but this chronological God-exalting approach to history was just what I needed to fill in significant gaps in my own history education, and for my daughter to gain a familiarity with so many important people and events in history and to see how biblical events overlapped with other things going on in the known world. For example, it was fascinating to learn that the first Olympics were happening during Jonah’s lifetime. We skipped most of the activities due to time constraints but my daughter loved the pre- and post-tests and they helped solidify the information for her. We are excited to jump into Volume 2 next school year.

This is our curriculum for homeschool history. It is AMAZING!! It is history taught from a Biblical standpoint. It is chronological, and it teaches the old testament history and prophets in the timeline with what's going on in the rest of the world. I CANNOT recommend this book highly enough, even just to have around and read. This book should be in every Christian's library!

Tremendous world history from a biblical perspective. While the "bite-sized" lessons can certainly stand alone, they easily lend themselves to supplementation.

Enjoyed the conversational tone. Used this for 7th and 9th grades with much supplementary reading in whole books, but MOH is appropriate for pretty much any grade level, having been designed with collective family study in mind.

Original review:
This was a fascinating study! I am looking forward to going through it again with my kids in the years to come. The activities, map work and timeline ideas were superb.

I really appreciate the author's perspective and worldview. It's so refreshing to study history from a standpoint which isn't tainted by historical revisionism or evolutionary jargon.

Definitely recommended. I'm going to try Diana Waring's history curriculum as well, to see how they compare and to decide which I prefer. Regardless, this was great and I desire to continue studying Mystery of History with Volume II!

História mundial de uma perspectiva clássica e cristã. Ideal para famílias homeschoolers. Lições curtas e com uma linguagem acessível. Altamente recomendado pelos Bluedorns, autores do Teaching the Trivium. http://www.triviumpursuit.com/blog/20...

Só de analisar os primeiros capítulos a respeito da criação e da "pré-história" você já vê que ele é bem mais consistente do que os livros de história da Susan Wisebauer. O livro realmente é escrito de acordo com a cosmovisão cristã, sem rodeios.

Want to order this for part of our history curriculum this year. It has been described to me as very similar to The Story Of the World (which I like very much) but from a Christian perspective (which is the only thing I though SOTW lacked!) yay!

I love The Mystery of History series. Vol 1 focuses on the bible's perspective of history, mixed with other wordly events but binds them together. you'd be surprised how much you don't know. Again this volume is great but I think Vol 2 is much better. Looking forward to vol 3!
