Authored by two passionate psychologists and educators, Book How to Develop and Support Successful, Motivated Readers is a how-to guide rich with stories, lessons, activities, and ideas aimed at supporting reading development and addressing the broad range of interpersonal, social, emotional, and motivational skills that can be fostered by reading with young children. The early chapters in this book will help you get your child ready for school and ready to read, and the later chapters will help you foster your child's lifelong love of reading. Throughout the book, the authors also provide tips for building a special bond with your child through reading together, from giving appropriate praise to modeling persistence. Perhaps most importantly, this book serves as a guide along the path to raising an independent reader. This journey begins with a discussion of oral language and early reading skills and then moves into early writing attempts, story comprehension, general knowledge development, and social-emotional growth. This book will help parents bring the joy of reading into the home.
This book is fantastic! It is incredibly helpful, insightful, and intelligent, while remaining easy-to-read and not too academic, so that the layman does not get lost or overwhelmed. It would be helpful for any parent of a child from birth to eight-years-old, as well as teachers, tutors, and anyone who works with children or parents. I highly recommend it!
This is a great book, very readable, and parents can relate to all the information. I am an avid reader and Want my son to be one as well. We read together regularly. This book gave me great insight into what more I can do to instill love of reading,
Great tips and strategies to help my son keep reading for years to come.
Had to return this book to the library before I finished it. But I ended up buying it. Exactly as it states, this isn't a book you just read once. It is a book you can keep going back to. I will use this book to help me plan my Family Book Club for Beginning Readers program at the library. I like how this book provides many examples as to what it is discussing. (and different levels of skill)
Dense, and definitely geared toward readers who are familiar with academic reading rather than standard parenting books, but very interesting and useful. I'll freely admit that, since my kiddo is only three, I did not read all of this book, but rather skimmed sections that applied to ages significantly older than his.
I got this from the library to help my son he told me he wants to learn to read. Wow. It is so in-depth and breaks down reading so well with exercises and examples .... it really shows how amazing it is that any of us learn to read! Very long and technical but great roadmap
I am in absolute awe of this amazing book on reading with your children, aptly titled, BOOK SMART: How to Develop and Support Successful, Motivated Readers.
Think back to your own childhood: do you have a special memory with a caregiver and a book? Perhaps you curled up into a grandparent’s lap with a dog-eared copy of nursery rhymes. Maybe you escaped into a popular series as a grade-schooler. Do you recall *your* favorite childhood book?
BOOK SMART will touch on nostalgia while presenting a fabulous array of research in parent-friendly terms, while offering ideas for increasing the love of literature at home, being tech-savvy, and so much more.
