EMBROILED – From a reviewer “Em/Jaz/Abby/Emily – how are all related? What has Jones done to bring these heroines full circle? To answer that question would be a spoiler. Better to say that some of the story line in this book which concludes the series made me very angry. Involving the reader so strongly in the characters’ lives is surely the sign of a powerful author. All I will say is that the ending is satisfying in every way.”

Darlene Jones is a retired educator and writer. A graduate of the University of Alberta she was a teacher, principal, second language consultant, and staffing officer with Edmonton Public schools. Her multiple roles included second language curriculum development for secondary students. After retiring she continued to provide educational workshops for teachers in the province of Alberta.
She began her career as a volunteer with Canadian University Services Overseas. She taught school in Mali and it was the plight of the Malians that inspired her to write her first novel—science fiction—described by readers as a “think piece.”
She continues to write fiction that incorporates topics such as world affairs, aging, and Alzheimer’s, with the added mix of adventure, romance and humor.
What if you had hallucinations? But, these aren’t just hallucinations. These are past memories from lives you have already lived. Emily deals with these hallucinations without knowing what they truly are. Soon she meets a mysterious man she is instantly attracted to. Yves is from another world. This world is “perfect”. His world is made of persons from other planets that have been saved and moved to his planet. When Yves decides it is this life that Emily is meant to join him in his world he sets out to woo her. This is no easy feet and at times has unfortunate consequences. Finally, without understanding what she’s asking for, Emily asks to see Yves world. Unbeknownst to her she is taken to his world and is given 100 Earth day to decide whether she want to live with Yves who she loves or have her memories erased and go back to Earth. While Emily is trying to learn the ways of Yves world she realizes that there are serious cracks in the perfection that is his world. In fact, Yves world is in more danger than anyone knows. In the end will Emily choose her world or Yves? Both have consequences and joys. What can she live with and what or who can she live without?
I enjoyed this book. Though I enjoyed it, I did get a bit confused at times due to the time reversals and the memory changes. One instance is Emily’s retirement. A one point she is retired and in the next it seems she is back to working at the school. It got to be confusing until we get to the part where Emily goes to Yves world. That portion is well written and flows very well. Emily and Yves I liked but Emily at times was confusing just like her story. I also really liked Yves people on his world. They were well written supporting characters and helped move the story along and helped to develop Emily’s character. The love story of Emily and Yves was good. Without saying it the story brings in the idea of soul mates with past lives. I enjoy that idea and with that in the story really caught my attention. Overall, I really was hooked into this book. But, I would warn anyone reading this book that you may have times where you are very confused and not sure what exactly is going on. If you can get past some of the confusing parts then you will be hooked just like me.
The novel follows Emily, whose hallucinations point to her previous lives. Yes, she has lived more than once. Without realizing what these episodes are, she decides to see David, an intelligent therapist. But after several of sessions, it appears they both are going around in circles. Does this mean she is mad? Suicidal?
Emily’s need to resolve her hallucinations becomes even more interesting when she meets Yves, a charming super human. He’s the one who has the answer she seeks — the knowledge of who she really is. He’s the one who has loved her forever. Emily is instantly attracted to him. For Yves, after a long time of watching her, in some occasions covertly protecting her from danger, he decides that this is right time woo her, to make her a part of his world. Of course, this is more than she ever expected. She, not knowing what she’s asking for, tells him to take her to his world.
The splendour of Yves’s world is almost palpable. Everything looks perfect. Not only is it home to other wonderful beings like him, it’s also a place of refuge for natives of some dying planets. Emily, not long after her arrival, learns that she has hundred days to decide if she wants to live with Yves in his world. Everyone welcomes her, except Algar. He’s objectionable and seems to resent her. Curious, she tries to find out more about his person. This investigation soon pays off as it leads to an even greater discovery about a coup. At this point, Emily must choose between Earth and Yves’s world a place to call home, a place to spend the rest of her days.
Embroiled, as the last book of the series, is interesting and puts poetic justice in its proper perspective. The descriptions about the environment and life in Yves’s world are uncluttered. The same can be said about other things in book. The conversations are enjoyable. As for the characters, I find them well-conveyed. The writer in me has special love for villain(s). As the chief villain in Embroiled, Algar doesn’t come up short in any way. As a whole package, the series is enjoyable and good not just for the hopeless romantic alone.
Embroiled is unlike any other book that I have read in a while. I was totally hooked because all the questions that were popping up in my head where not being answered. I had a feeling that they would not be answered until I completed the book. There are three parts to this story and while each part is a very similar story Emily has a different problem that she is facing. In part one Emily has the strong urge to walk over ice, even though she knows she will break through and drown. Her obsession is finding out what is waiting for her underneath the ice. While that doesn’t seem too interesting it does in fact become EXTREMELY interesting when a man named Yves comes into the picture (by the way, Yves is not from Earth). Yves chewed his lower lip, “I’m the man waiting for you under the ice.” And with that statement he had Emily screaming as she ran away from him. Other actions happen which do not benefit Yves and his attempt to woo Emily so he must start over. Insert part two. In part two Emily doesn’t have the obsession with the ice because she no longer remembers that incident, but now Emily cannot remember the people around her. Hmm, I wonder why? Insert part three, which is by far my favorite part! Emily must make a very hard decision about her future. But when it’s the person you have loved forever, how hard can one simple decision really be. This book is more real than most romance stories because it describes the struggles that Emily and Yves face, just like any real relationship outside of books. Embroiled ends in such a way that would make any reader happy if it was the end, but I feel that there is more to come. Darlene Jones has created a wonderful romance that will be shared for many years. This easy read contains 34 chapters which makes is a good length to read, not to short and not too long. My rating is 5+ stars!!!
Embroiled – an absorbing love story with a futuristic twist
I must admit, I can’t get enough of futuristic/romance novels so when I discovered EMBROILED I bought it immediately. In no time I was caught up in the trials of two star-crossed lovers from different worlds. Em and Yves have loved each other for eons, through all Em’s past reincarnations. Now that Yves has taken over as Mentor he wants her by his side but Emily thinks the good looking guy she keeps on meeting is stalking her.
The heroine is a joy to get to know as a character. In a world where Humans are despised by the 'all mighty Powers', she refuses to be intimidated. When she discovers a scheme to overthrow Yves she puts her life at risk to save him. The hero also is a 3D character, and totally believable. Though he has the responsibility for the problems of the entire universe, he is a just a regular guy head over heels in love with a girl, everyone thinks isn't good enough for him.
This was the first book I have ever read by Darlene Jones, but it definitely won't be the last. I highly recommended EMBROILED- it has the right blend of sci-fi, romance and paranormal elements. It’s definitely worth 5 stars!
Em is back again. From Em in Embattled, and her reincarnations as Jasmine in Empowered and Abby in Embraced, Emily (Em) is at last coming to terms with her obsession about that other world “up there.” She is almost powerless to resist the pull that draws her like a magnet to Yves’s world. Their love is never in question; only Emily’s acceptance of it is. We are drawn into the story so completely that we forget that planet hopping is probably not possible. As we are engrossed in the novel, interplanetary travel becomes quite acceptable and we welcome any new magic-like tricks. Most of the citizens of the new world are welcoming and friendly, but Algar immediately gets Emily’s alarm bells ringing. Not only is he obnoxious, but he appears to be behind an evil plot that could ruin Yves's world. Emily must come to terms with choosing whether to stay and help Yves fight the evil plot, or throw away his love and go back home to the security of Earth.
Some of the story line in this book which concludes the series made me very angry. Involving the reader so strongly in the characters’ lives is surely the sign of a powerful author. Without giving away any spoilers, I will say that the ending is satisfying.
