28 year old Bobby Shaw doesn't have commitment issues. Sure, she only takes temp jobs and her lease is month-to-month, but that was because she was keeping her options open.
Handler is devoted to his job--gathering intel for the U.S. government via a little-known subagency with a unique methodology--and the last thing he wants is to babysit a new kid. Especially when that new kid is Bobby and she strongly reminds him of his ex.
But neither of them have a choice in the matter. To make things worse, no one knows who gave the order to recruit Bobby and before they can find out, Handler's boss turns up dead in a locked room. There's something else going on here and if Bobby and Handler don't find a way to work together, neither of them will survive to find out what.

I got an advanced copy of the e-book from the author, Kate Winters on the Goodreads group Mysteries & Crime Thrillers.
I very much enjoyed reading the first person narrative by Bobby, enough to keep me reading late into the night. I finished the book at around 3 am in the morning and even then I was left yearning for more.
SPOILERS Ahead. Consider yourself warned!!
Bobby is a girl who's life is a real mess right now. A man named Handler enters her apartment without permission and there is no reception on her cellphone while he is there. He tells her that the reason she is experiencing a heightened sense of awareness, sharpened hearing, sleep disturbances etc. is because her antibiotics were substituted by another pill called Glow. He warns her that she forgot to take her pill last night and she could die if she forgets her next dose. He tells her that she has got a new job and he should call him to get more pills if she wants to live. After Handler is gone, she tries calling her brother who is in the CIA but he doesn't answer.
Just as Handler had warned her, Bobby's feet seems to stick to the floor tiles as she moves across the apartment and her eyes begin to bleed. She barely manages to get the last pill down her throat and passes out on her bedroom floor. In the morning, Bobby washes up and calls Handler on the cellphone he left for her. He asks her to meet him at the war memorial at Frederick Park.
In the park, Bobby realizes that her hearing has actually been significantly enhanced. Handler tells her that she was drafted to replace a dead female agent because she was genetically compatible. He hints that he is working for the government and tells her that he is to be her handler. He is about to give her the first assignment after which she will get a dose of the fatal tablet called "Glow".
Riding in his convertible, they arrive at a fundraiser party. He tells her that the target is Ellie Laungsruber, a rising local politician, whom they have to find and kill! Bobby refuses to kill anyone even if it means that she will have to die. Handler, known to the people at the party as Dane, introduces Bobby as his sister Louise. He puts something in the Ellie's drink, but Bobby smashes the glass to the floor before she could drink it. Without giving her any answers, he drives Bobby home where she finds one pill in the medicine bottle. Bobby hears voices in her head and suspects that she can hear people's thoughts too.
The next day, Bobby goes to the office of this secret organization and starts receiving training for her new job. Handler takes her inside a sensory deprivation chamber which immediately reminded me of a similar chamber in Dr. Walter Bishop's lab in the TV show, Fringe. Moreover, this book also reminded me of CW's TV show, Nikita.
The will-they, wont-they chemistry between Bobby and Handler is superbly written. My only complaint was that the novel was too short. We didn't really get to see Bobby go on an actual mission, but if this is a series, there is time for that yet. For a first book, this was a great effort by the author. I can't wait to read more adventures of Agent Bobby Shaw.
