Witajcie kochani 🌟

Moja ocena to 4/5🌟

Rating for character design, art, and plot potential, 5 stars. But plot potential is not plot delivered. Even being oversized, it felt like we only got half of an opening story arc. Will I keep reading the hopefully eventual continuation? Yeah. But as is, this was disappointing.

A fun team adventure which shamelessly stands upon the shoulders of material like Sailor Moon, but still works nonetheless.
You've got your team of young ladies, you've got your mystical superpowers and the whole story is nicely seasoned with some surprisingly powerful action scenes, considering the relatively playful Ghibli-esque art style.

This art is also effective enough to clearly deliver the narrative during extended periods without text, which I'll always respect.
Comics are a visual medium and clogging panels with text is never the way to go, so high praise indeed to Loic.

I thoroughly enjoyed this surprising find and if I had any gripes, they'd only be that I found myself left with many unanswered questions and (as it didn't say Vol. 1 anywhere) I did feel a tad underfed by the open-ended nature of the conclusion.

I do look forward to returning to this world though.

Straightforward magical girl story.
Hilariously, they DO point out how odd it is that the newly inducted member of the team is breaking up the "Three Musketeers" dynamic...and then they go on to say that the ORIGINAL Three Musketeers had 4 members too!

Gotta give them props for using not very typical members of the produce aisle to represent the powers of the girls.
Leader is dragonfruit.
Kooky one is pomegranate.
Stoic&mysterious one is artichoke (not even a fruit!).
Newbie is pineapple.
By these powers combined, and with the "help" of a sizable support staff, they'll repel the alien invasion who waged war with a big giant head spaceship. The aliens themselves are straightforward, mustache-twirling bad guys, maybe with a lil bit of unexplained religious fanaticism, but any species that have masks where heads should be and faces in their torsos have GOT to be hiding something...
Really fun and I suppose we'll figure it out as the story progresses.

I wish I liked this better than I did, maybe I just wasn't in the mood because I love magical girl stuff but it's not bad.

3,5-ish. The art style was cute and I liked the characters, but I did find the premise pretty silly, and I had a hard time following the worldbuilding and bigger plot. But honestly I almost want to round my rating up just for the fact that the main character was a magical girl with PINEAPPLE POWERS. Amazing. The superhero designs were adorable, even if a fruit themed superhero group doesn't make a lick of sense. But again. Pineapple powers...

I really enjoyed this story. Love the magical girl genre. My only critique and reason I brought it down to 5 stars is because where’s the rest of it?? 😭😭

The art is so cute but it's a lil too lore heavy for how short it is. If I wasn't aware there was a sequel, I would've bumped a star because of how it suddenly just ends.

Magical girls for adults. I absolutely loved this! This includes the first 3 trades of Flavor Girls, just be warned it ends on a cliff hanger. There aren’t currently more issues, so hopefully this isn’t the end. I’d really like to see the story finished.

The art is breath-taking, the characters are really three-dimensional, and the plot is definitely going somewhere interesting. Apart from the diversity of the team itself, there’s also disability rep, which is kinda refreshing in a sorta post-apocalyptic world—it makes sense that people would have injuries. It’s also not overly violent, though there’s certainly a bit.

There’s even a really great side story at the end if you like Japanese horror.

I feel like this would be such a good show. I mean, I’d watch it.

I can never resist anything Magical GirlTM related, so when I first saw this in my local bookshop, I had to check it out.

'Flavor Girls' - a stupid and completely unfit title for a surprisingly dark Magical GirlTM story. Don't be fooled by the colours, character designs, art style and fruit-themed Magical GirlsTM; this comic is not for children. There is violence and tragedy. It is like 'Pacific Rim' meets 'Power Rangers' meets 'Transformers' meets 'Steven Universe' meets 'Kung Fu Panda' meets any Magical GirlTM anime you can think of. Basically, it's an alien invasion plot crossed over with the Magical GirlTM genre. It's bizarre, and by the end it is blatantly apparent that it is not a finished story.

Yet, shockingly, I was really into it while I was reading, and I enjoyed it. It takes a lot for me to dislike a Magical GirlTM product, I guess.

The aliens, the mysterious Agartha, have been attacking and terrorising earth for twelve years. The only people standing between them and humanity's total destruction are the Sacred Fruit Guardians; girls who are chosen by a giant Mother Earth core tree named Mamrea (long story) to fight the invaders. The nicknamed "Flavor Girls" are mentored and trained by Master Himiko, the keeper and guardian of the Temple and Mamrea, and by Matilda, a former marathon runner, and bereaved family woman. They are also watched over by a government program called the Alliance of Sovereign States (A.S.S., ha-ha), led by the creepy Ponzzy White. All these women reside at the Temple, which is in another dimension suspended in time and space, where other people of earth also live in sanctuary.

Sara is the newest and last member of the Flavor Girls. Her theme and power is Pineapple (don't laugh, this is a dark and intense sci-fi story!). She is a student who wants to make a difference in the world and make peace with the Agartha, and she is very clumsy and awkward. After an alien attack in Paris, her home, and after she is unexpectedly chosen to be a Flavor Girl, she decides to leave her old life behind - including her two friends, Lydia and... I don't think her male friend is ever named - and join in the fight to save the world, alongside her new Flavor Girl friends.

They are: Naoko, the Dragonfruit Guardian, the leader whose tragic backstory is the one we are first introduced to (the writer clearly favours her, to the point of practically taking Sara's role as protagonist in most parts of the comic), and who is not so solemn and angsty as you would expect, as she's actually nice and friendly, and always determined to help others; no, the dark, serious and brooding character type is V, the Artichoke Guardian, who is stubborn, sporty, mostly quiet, and likes to drink; and last but definitely not least is Camille, the Pomegranate Guardian, the laidback, chatty joker of the group who is always hungry. Obviously she must be hiding a dark side, and suppressing a traumatic past.

There is a lot to unpack here, and a lot left unanswered and unexplained. But wow I was invested in what I got. At the heart of it all, 'Flavor Girls' is a solid Magical GirlTM story, with little subversions and twists here and there. A side story that pays homage to a classic Japanese horror film is included at the end of the volume. I like it, but again it puts Naoko in the spotlight at the expense of the other girls, and it hinges on the reader knowing, well, anything about A.S.S. and Ponzzy, when they, in fact, factor only a tiny bit in the main plot.

I wish the comic were longer, and that its newbie protagonist wasn't a white blonde (Sara does look and act like Usagi Tsukino, only she's more academically-minded... wait, is Naoko's name a reference to the mangaka of 'Sailor Moon', Naoko Takeuchi?) when the other Magical GirlsTM are POC - of course she's special, despite lacking experience, stamina and combat skills. And that it were "fruity" in the LBGTQ+ content sense, though maybe that will manifest in its continuation, if that ever develops and sees the light of day?

I'd like to know more of Irina's story, too. So much mystery!

Mysteries such as... Sara is the glasses-wearing girl, but why is Naoko suddenly the one wearing glasses in the end story?

Mixing sci-fi and fantasy, tragedy and comedy, horror and heart, 'Flavor Girls' is a mixed bag indeed, but a charming and exciting one. It comes recommended by me to any Magical GirlTM fan, and fans of modern "dark" cartoony media.

Final Score: 3.5/5

P.S. The blurb on the back of the volume ends with '[...] a new Magical Girl all-ages adventure with an environmental twist!'. The all-ages part is a lie, and the environmental twist is barely touched on at this time, like the A.S.S. inclusion.

Some incredible ideas here - seriously, really interested in what's going on with the tree and the titans, Irina, and the very Steven Universe-esque temple - and I enjoyed the moments of levity. Sara going through the offshoot for the first time? Hilarious.

The art is also gorgeous. Very fun, clean, easy to read - you're never confused about the action, and some of the panel layouts are to die for. I don't regret reading it for the art alone.

Buuuuuut the presentation is not the best. The pacing in particular threw me off - we're rushed through Sara's awakening as a Flavor Girl, leading to infodumps about characters and the world that fall flat, while receiving very little concrete plot development. I kept being like, man, I wish this was a manga where everything was drawn out over a truly unnecessary number of volumes - I'd probably be having more fun, and it would give me time to grow attached to the characters. As is, it's a nonstop beat of character traits shoved in your face in the most blatant way possible without giving them time to actually act in a way which reflects those traits without another character needing to call attention to them.

And the tone of the entire book leans... a little juvenile, considering the obvious intention to confront darker themes down the road. I kept checking the spine label to make sure this really was a YA book I had in my hands.

It kept my attention enough to finish, especially given the ending of this volume had me salivating with the potential for where the story could go - but I don't think I'd go out of my way to read the next volume unless it happened to pass through my hands, and I can't really recommend it for anyone outside of maybe a very specific age group of "mildly precocious 13 year olds who loved Steven Universe and Sailor Moon."

I read another of the authors books Persephone and didn't really like it but when I recognized the name on this I thought hey let's give this guy another shot. Boy...
I will say beautiful art and the world and threat is very interesting. It doesn't feel like a generic magical girl inspired comic. And the intro really got me hooked. Seriously what a good intro!! Ahhh! However what followed was too much set up. It's basically all worldbuilding and set up. Sara the MC feels half baked, she has a strong set up and intro but her whole deal is she's a newbie. But I never really get the feeling that she actually cares. You admire someone for trying and failing more than succeeding instantly but when she finally does succeed it's like okay? Why now? Idk what I'm saying.
I like the side characters though. Especially the lady who mentors Sara, sorry forgot her name. Even though she doesn't appear for long her backstory made me really interested in her. It's kinda dissapoitning the MC is the least interesting character. Seriously were made aware how big of a choice it was for Sara to be the last flavor girl. Out of everyone in the world Sara was chosen. Why? We're not told and we're not really given a hint into why besides she wants to be a diplomat. But can't she do that without being a powered up fruit themed girl?
But yeah if another volume comes out I might change my tune but for now? Idk. I don't see anything on more. When I was reading I thought this was a single volume comic, when I started getting close to the end I was confused only to find out it's a to be continued! Seriously! The only arc that got completed was Sara becoming a fully fledged Flavor Girl, but aside from that Eveyrhting is set up. Nothing else gets completed in this volume. Idk when the next volume is coming out or if. But by the time it does I will have lost interest.

I read this as single issues, but this came up in my feed so here we go. This is more gritty and dour than the silly fruit/flavor theme and colorful outfits would indicate. Although, "magical girls but gritty" kind of became it's own thing for a while. A ragtag group of girls given thematic fruit/flavor powers has to defend the world tree from alien invaders.

The story has a serious tone and moves at an abrupt and hectic pace wrapping up in only 3 issues (~176 pages). This pacing ultimately left me unsatisfied, but it wasn't without a redeeming feature; for me, the biggest standout point was that it was a serious magical girl run and it was Platonic.

It's pretty rare to have a magical girl series with no romance, and even rarer for the story to be serious or have more mature characters and still have no romance. So I give it props for that and feel that made it more unique which was why I had a positive impression despite not being a big fan of the tone and pacing.

This was VERY pretty to look at. The art style was gorgeous - if they made posters of some of these pages, I would hang them up on my wall. I love the colors, the cute civilian AND transformation outfits, the hairstyles, the backgrounds, etc. I would honestly volunteer to be a magical girl just for the costume alone.

I thought this was the first volume of a longer series, so I will be sorely disappointed if there isn't anything else following this up. There is so much potential built up here with the alien villains and the Alliance people- and I need to know how it started and VERY MUCH need to know how it ends.

The characters are okay- the only one who was fleshed out a bit more was Naoko. The others seemed pretty one-note, but again, they were supportive and I'd be happy to see them become closer friends as they grow together.

All in all, I enjoyed this mostly for the art. If there are any future volumes, I would love to see how the story continues :)

Flavor Girls offers a really fun origin story for a new, manga-tinged superhero team. Four human girls have been tasked with preventing mysterious space beings from taking control of the hidden tree that connects all living beings. Their super powers are based on plants, which is...cute, I guess. In general, the series is cute - though it can get quite dark (there are several deaths) and some of the characters are unexpectedly hard drinkers. It's hard to identify the audience for Flavor Girls.

The artwork is fluid and fun throughout and the characters, while still somewhat vaguely sketched, are primed for growth in future volumes. I'm excited for more world-building and more plant-based action!

This was pretty okay but nothing special. I liked the art style, the colors and such. But the plot felt a little underdeveloped, unfortunately. Or I wished and expected a little more effort since this is a magic girl comic. Now it felt like the creators were very excited about the idea and premise of this comic but the actual result was cliche and didn't quit reach the top.

I liked the idea of every flavor girl having their own fruit to define their powers and them having the fruit staffs (even tho artichoke is not a fruit, right?). The transformation parts were quit hilarious because every magic girl book/series has those. And the actual magic girl costumes reminded me of Sailor Moon costumes.

But a nice graphic novel after all, I think I would recommend this.

Beautiful art and nice backstory to the characters and the builded world. The girls and their powers (and fruits) are so cute!
However, it's too dense, it would need more chapters to be able to explain deeper all the ideas presented. The story just doesn't go anywhere and stops abruptly, not a fan of that. I was expecting an end.

Picked this up on a whim on a business trip to San Francisco and couldn't be more happy with my impulse buy. The art was fun and expressive. The story hits that nostalgic sweet spot while infusing a whole bunch of fun new world building. I'm excited for whatever comes next for the Flavor Girls.

Hadn’t realized it was unfinished; leaves off on a cliffhanger. So far it’s fine. I don’t know if I’m very in love with the story—it’s the sort of thing I’ve seen many times before and so far hasn’t really added anything new to the genre.

I liked the illustrations and the concepts! I eagerly await more. I feel like a lot of lore was dropped and a larger picture or more story would have been nice to make feel a bit more rounded out in its finish rather than so abrupt. It definitely gave intro/pilot episode vibes.
