Wildlife Monographs:Wolves

Rate this book
There are probably more myths and legends about wolves than any other living creature.  In fiction they are most often portrayed as evil but in this book the authors set out, in words and pictures, to produce a clearer and un-prejudiced understanding of the lives of these carnivorous mammals; their history, habits, distribution, environment and their association with man, himself a hunter.

This is a largely visual book, full of stunning photographs that will appeal to anyone with an interest in wolves. The text, which definitely takes second place to the pictures, is informative, but only on a basic level - it is rather blandly written and does not go into much detail on any aspect of wolf behaviour or ecology. This is fine if you are beginner in the world of wolves and just want a general overview of the species, but if you already have some knowledge of wolves you will not find anything new or attention-grabbing here.

I was rather surprised and disappointed to see that a picture of maned wolves (actually not wolves at all) had been captioned "red wolves" in this book - a fairly large oversight given that the authors are supposedly experts. There are also a number of grammatical errors, such as the omission of numerous apostrophes and the use of "tale" instead of "tail", which should not have made it into print - perhaps a lazy editor or over-reliance on computer spell-checkers is at fault here.

In conclusion, I recommend this book for the photographs, but if you are after a comprehensive, in-depth examination of the species, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Beautiful photos let down by poorly-spellchecked copy. Some very interesting descriptions of wolf behaviour and hints on where and how to photograph them.

This is a decent overview of wolves, giving a reasonable explanation of their way of life, but does not delve too deeply into details of their biology, sociability or anything else. Great for beginners who just want to know the basics (although there are a shocking number of grammatical mistakes), but wolf aficionados will already know most of this stuff. That said, the book does feature some really lovely photos – if you love wolves, it’s worth getting just for these. Just try to ignore the picture of maned wolves – these animals aren’t wolves and shouldn’t appear in the book, much less with the label “red wolves”, a completely different species!

Beautiful photos, captions bit repetetive, some info inconsistent with what I have read elsewhere. Otherwise good.

While the information of wolves is standard, the pictures are breathtaking. I recommend this book solely on the beautiful photography
