Yakov Isidorovich Perelman (Russian: Яков Исидорович Перельман; December 4, 1882 – March 16, 1942) was a Russian and Soviet science writer and author of many popular science books, including Physics Can Be Fun and Mathematics Can Be Fun (both translated from Russian into English).

I read it in English, but for some reason Goodreads lists only the Russian version of Volume 2. This book presents simple physical situations that can be easily understood with a bit of intuition, some occasional very basic equations and familiarity with high school level concepts of mechanics, optics, magnetism, fluid dynamics and wave theory. No calculus is required. But the wonderful thing for me was how Mr. Perelman illustrated his points with examples from Russian history, literature, folklore and geography. It was a lot of fun and reminded me of Ensign Chekhov on Star Trek, who likes to claim that everything was invented in Russia. I was in heaven. There aren't a lot of people who would get excited by getting a healty dose of physics and Russian culture in a single book. But it was right up my alley.

من أعظم الكتب التي قرأتها على الإطلاق ... وجدته بالصدفة في مكتبة المدرسة عام 1981 وتصصفحته وشدني كثيرا ... هو الذي شدني إلي دراسة الهندسة ... به تفسير لكثير من الظواهر التي تحدث حولنا وبه إجابات على الكثير من التساؤلات التي قد تخطر على بالنا. الترجمة قدتكون بعيدة بعض الشئ عن المصطلحات التي نستخدمها في مصر ولمنها في النهاية مفهومة (على سبيل المثال يستخدم كلمة دولاب ليعني بها العجلة وهي ترجمة صصحيحة ولكننا لسنا معتادين عليها في مصر)

فرق بين الفيزياء التي كنت أجدها قطعة من الجحيم أيام المدرسة، وبين هذه الفيزياء الفلسفية التي تطرح الاستنتاجات الخطأ وتحللها لتثير لهفتك للحقيقة قبل أن تجيبك عنها بمنطق يعطي التقدير الأول لعقلك ليبحث عن الاجابات بين الجدل
هنا فرق شاسع بين فلسفة التفكير وبين ميكانيكية التلقين المقيتة التي كنا ندرسها
عقود توشك ان تلامس القرن على أول طبعة من هذا الكتاب تشعرك كم نحن بعيدين في وطننا العربي عن سكة العلم الإبداعي

الكتاب ده ياخد اربع نجوم للى يفهمه كله ،وبما ان انا فى حاجات ما فهمتهاش عشان معلوماتى منقوصة فى بعض المواضيع فستحق ياخد تلات نجون بالنسبالى .. يعنى الكتاب نقص نجمة مش عشان عشان هو ما يستحقش ، عشان انا اللى ما استحقش :D

As I mentioned in my review of Volume 1 of "Physics for Entertainment" I thought this was a charming book containing scores of stories illustrating why things act the way they do in nature, such as sound waves, light waves, all sorts of natural phenomena. The author provides endlessly entertaining examples and explanations of so many things we usually take for granted or don't consider or stop to question in everyday life.

Here is a quote in connection with measuring air temperature: "...it is only in the shade that a thermometer will register the right temperature of the air. After all if it were exposed to the sun, it might be heated up to a much greater temperature than that of the surrounding air."

Also, a quote from section about dry ice, called "Cold from Coal:" "Dry ice is derived from liquid carbon dioxide by fast vaporization under a reduced pressure."

And in a discussion of radium: "Radium...emits three types of rays--respectively, alpha, beta and gamma rays."

In a section discussing how to determine the age of the Earth: "...the emission of ...alpha rays....a beam of charged particles of matter or atoms of the light inert gas helium--by the decaying atoms. As these charged particles possess enormous velocities, when released they lose their positive charge and settle down in the mineral as particles of ordinary helium--which explains why we find helium in all radioactive minerals."

All in all, I was entranced with this two-volume book. There was so much I didn't know.. or maybe had forgotten. Since the last time I was in school was 45 years ago, and since then I must say I have not in general read much on physics or math, "Physics for Entertainment" was a fun way to brush up on these topics. I think I could actually feel my brain getting much-needed exercise when reading this two-volume book!

Слабее первой, очень много цитирований художественных книг, я конечно не против, но эти цитирования выглядят как будто я пытаюсь пройти порог антиплагиата на дипломе
Мне кажется можно было самые интересные темы из этой книги переместить в первую и было бы отлично, хотя Перельман в самом начале пишет что это по сути сборник статей, а не полноценная книга, как первая

الهدف من هذا الكتاب "الفيزياء المسلية" هو تزويد القارئ بمعلومات جديدة في الفيزياء ومساعدته على "إدراك ما يعرفه" أي تعميق وإحياء ما لديه من المعلومات الأساسية في الفيزياء، وتعليمه كيف يتصرف بها عن وعي، مع حثه على استخدامها في مجالات مختلفة, ويقول مؤلفه "ياكوف بيير بلمان" أن ذلك لا يتم إلا ببحث عدد منوع من الألغاز والأسئلة المبتكرة والقصص المسلية والمسائل الممتعة والتناقضات الظاهرية والمقارنات غير المتوقعة في علم الفيزياء، المنسوبة إلى مجموعة الظواهر اليومية أو الروايات العلمية-الخيالية، المستمدة من مؤلفات مشهورة. كما ويقول أنه قد استخدم لتحقيق هدفه مادة الروايات العلمية -الخيالية على نطاق واسع، باعتبارها أكثر ملاءمة لا هداف الكتاب، فقدم مقتطفات من قصص وروايات جول فيرن وويلز ومارك توين وغيرهم، كما وحاول قدر استطاعته أن يضفي على الحديث من الظاهر، صيغة جذابة ويجعل الموضوع مشوقاً. استرشد بتلك البديهية النفسانية، التي تقضي بأن الاهتمام بالموضوع يركز الانتباه ويسهل الفهم، وبالتالي يمهد السبيل لاستيعاب المادة، بصورة أكثر إدراكا ووثوقاً. وخلافاً للتقاليد المرعية عند وضع مثل هذه الكتب فقد خصص المؤلف في كتابه هذا "الفيزياء المسلية" صفحات قليلة جداً لوصف التجارب الفيزيائية الممتعة والفعالة.

حينما تكون الفيزياء كاللعبة ، حينما تكون كشربة الماء ، حينما تكون كالفلم السينمائي .... الفيزياء المسلية من أفضل الكتب التي قرأتها في هذا العام ، كتاب يفسر لك ظواهر كونية كثيرة بعضها غريب وبعضها معتاد ولكن بدون أن نعرف السبب ، كتاب يبسط لك الفيزياء والطبيعة ، وأجمل ما في الكتاب أنه يبين لك أن كل شيء في هذا الكون من حركات وأفعال وحتى السكون مرتبط بالفيزياء.
يمكن لكل شخص قراءة هذا الكتاب والإستمتاع وحتى لو كان يكره الفيزياء سابقا ، سيجد هذا الكتاب الممتع يقربه من الفيزياء ويقنعه أن الفيزياء علم العلوم.
اسلوب الكاتب وطريقة العرض جميلة جداً ، وطريقة تنظيم الأفكار وربطها جميل جداً ، إلا أنه في بعض الأحيان تضيع الأفكار نتيجة لسوء الترجمة.
