This is a wonderfully poignant story that is a resonating slice of life. In a relatively brief page count, Agatha Christie makes you care deeply for the protagonist Joyce, and her little dog and companion, Terry.

Practically starving, and four weeks behind on her rent to Mrs. Barnes, Joyce cannot find work; all the jobs she could accept would preclude bringing her aging and sometimes grumpy — only with others — little friend. Terry is her connection to Michael, passed now but so fondly remembered that she cannot rely on his parents, less she reveal to them that Michael squandered their nest egg through gambling; she does not wish to tarnish their memory of him.

Desperation leads 29 year old Joyce to accept a proposal of marriage from a man she does not love, in order to prevent starvation and save her beloved little Terry.

A tragic — and painful to read — tragedy, and a kind man who may offer Joyce a real future will leave one wondering if Terry found a way…

This one will choke up anyone who has ever loved a dog so — or cat, or any animal — and understands how strong the bond can be. Both heartbreaking and hopeful, this is a memorable story which is included in the Problem at Pollensa Bay collection. A real gem, and a story never forgotten once read.

What would you do for your best four-legged friend?
Next to a Dog tells the tale of a young widow who is caring for her aging, ailing old dog. He was a gift from her now-dead husband and the only thing in the world she cares about.
She could take a better job, but it would require her to travel and she just can't bear to part with her terrier.

description

She eventually comes up against reality and has no way to pay her rent. Instead of getting rid of her dog, she agrees to marry a rich man whom she loathes. <--it's intimated that he's quite the creeper!

However, things seem to work themselves out for her because
Awww.
Anyway. I think this was Christie's bittersweet homage to dog lovers.

Next to a Dog is a short story first published in The Golden Ball and Other Stories, an Agatha Christie story collection printed in the US in 1971. It was printed in the UK as part of Problem at Pollensa Bay and Other Stories (1991). I could find no record of any television or radio adaptations of this story.

For me, this was another odd story.... Twelve of the stories in the Golden Ball collection I liked very much....3 of them not so much. This one falls in the Not-so-Much category. A widow is determined to keep her wire terrier dog. Even though she is unemployed, a month behind on her rent and basically starving, she is not going to be separated from her dog Terry because her husband gave him to her before he died in the war. The world can be a mean place....and this story definitely illustrates the choices women sometimes are forced to make.

I found this story more troubling than entertaining. Out of all of the Agatha Christie short stories I have read so far (and there have been many of them!), the fact that I have only disliked 3 is a pretty good average. Not every story is for every reader....so in any short story collection or any author's works there are bound to be a few here and there a reader might not like. As a dog owner, there was one scene in this story that bothered me....and the ending was strange. I understand the meaning -- I just didn't like it.

The story is well-written. I just didn't like the subject matter or the outcome. It is what it is....

I did read while doing my research on this story that Christie loved wire-haired terriers and even dedicated one of her books to her dog, Peter (who was a wire haired terrier).

On to the next!

4 Stars. A delightful little story of sadness, desperation, devotion, and hope. It's all about a young woman, she's 29 but feels 69, who is searching high and low for a job as a day companion, as opposed to a travelling one, in order to remain in London. She hears of numerous opportunities with families going to Europe, or a widower with his son and mother to Italy. It's not because she's behind on her rent to a friendly land-lady, which she is. No, it's because she has an older dog with health problems and a travelling position wouldn't allow her to bring Terry along. Joyce Lambert's husband Michael, who was killed in the Great War, gave him to her 12 years ago as a puppy as a special gift just before returning to the trenches. I read the short story, just 20 pages, in Problem at Pollensa Bay and Other Stories from 1991. Her love for the dog is absolute, as is Terry's for her. The wire-haired terrier is the last connection she has to her husband, the man she married as a teenager and misses painfully. In order to keep the dog, Joyce even offers to marry a repulsive man she met recently. Not usually my kind of story, but it's a Christie! (Oc2021/De2025)

This is one of my favorite short stories of all time. It's cheesy as hell, but I like cheese when it fits neatly into my boundaries. Without spoiling anything: it's got appealing characters willing to make Noble Sacrifices for each other, and hints at older man/younger woman romance at the end. Plus, the villain of the piece is someone I find deliciously terrifying in a realistic way.

A must-read for people who love dogs, older man/younger woman romance, or cheesy goodness in general.

It's just a beautiful short story about a young widow's love for her dog. Life is difficult, sacrifices have to be made, yet everything is somewhat better in the end. Being a dog lover myself, I couldn't help but she'd a few tears along the way.

A very sweet, lovable and, heart wrenching story about the relationship between dog owner and her dog, their companionship and to what ends she would go to to keep her dog safe and housed.

A widow is in desperate need of a job but no one will hire her because she can only do a day job because she needs to go home each night to care for her old dog. She decides, as a last resort, to agree to marry her husband’s smarmy friend who doesn’t love her but wants to possess her. The next day, the dog gets too close to the window ledge and falls out. A man drives up and offers to take her and the dog to the vet, where the dog dies. The next day, she breaks her engagement and goes to the agency again to say that she can take any job as her obligations are no longer an impediment. She is interviewed by a man who needs a companion for his elderly mother and it is the man who helped her with her dog. Reminded me of Bob, the terrier from Dumb Witness.

Next to a Dog - an Agatha Christie Standalone Short Story by Agatha Christie
First published in 'Grand Magazine' in 1929.

GR Thumbnail -

My thoughts -
A woman without funds for rent or food receives solace from her dog. When the dog is injured, a good Samaritan lends a hand to help the woman get vet treatment. This chance encounter turns into something more. Not what I expected from AC, but a meaningful dog story and better than average I venture to say. Thus, a solid 3-stars.

A young widow keeps being offered positions she can’t take because of her dog. Her only possible option is to marry a man she truly finds distasteful.
‘You do know – don’t you – that I don’t love you? Not in the least.’
‘I’m not worrying about that. I’m not thin-skinned. But no hankypanky, my girl. If you marry me, you play fair.’
The colour flashed into Joyce’s cheeks. ‘You will have your money’s worth,’ she said.
‘What about a kiss now?’ He advanced upon her. She waited, smiling. He took her in his arms, kissing her face, her lips, her neck. She neither stiffened nor drew back. He released her at last.
‘I’ll get you a ring,’ he said. ‘What would you like, diamonds or pearls?’
‘A ruby,’ said Joyce. ‘The largest ruby possible – the colour of blood.’

Jeez, Joyce…

The edition I read had three stort stories: "Next to a Dog", and two Hercule Poirot stories "Problem at Sea" and "How Does Your Garden Grow?"

"Next to a Dog" is not a mystery story, rather one about a devotion to an old dog amid desperate situations. Joyce Lambert is trying to find work but can't accept most jobs as she has the old dog her late husband left her. Her solution to the problems is quite remarkable, as well as how she manages to get out of it again.

Hercule Poirot solves things again. Very adroitly too, and without taking too much time.

This copy is also translated into Czech by Michala Marková and Edda Němcová. The left page is in English and the right in Czech. Sadly I don't know enough Czech so I only read the left-hand side with a couple of glimpses across.

this story was funny. I'm not a dog person, i had many pets, yet i have never thought to choose my pet over my family or lover. so i didn't relate to the story. i don't even understand why does she wants to marry him only because her dog? it's her dog not his. especially when she hates him.

I didn't feel like there was much to the story. I felt a little sad at almost the end about Terry because I could sympathize but when it comes to plot, there was really nothing of note.
