Rate this book
Discover a series of classic 1950s village whodunnits packed with twists and red herrings to keep armchair sleuths on their toes. Perfect for fans of golden age detectives.

In this 6-book box set:

BOOK 1: POSTMAN’S KNOCK
Grange Road is a tranquil place to live — until the sudden disappearance of the postman sparks deceit, blackmail, and violence. Anxious to hide their incriminating circumstances, Grange Road’s colourful residents refuse to help Inspector Pitt in his investigation. Then one of them is found dead. Can Pitt untangle their secrets before anyone else is hurt?

BOOK 2: PICK UP THE PIECES
Four garage mechanics kill an old lady in a hit-and-run. Their boss, Andrew White, witnesses the crime and sees an opportunity for blackmail. Bitter and desperate, the men hatch a plan to steal White’s savings. Nobody mentions murder. But the following morning their boss is found dead and Inspector Pitt is asking questions.

BOOK 3: MOTIVES FOR MURDER
The entire staff of Redways Preparatory School wants to be rid of old John Connaught. So there’s no absence of suspects when he’s found dead in the river. As gossip abounds in the corridors and common rooms of the school, everyone becomes an amateur detective. Inspector Pitt will have to race to be the first to solve the mystery.

BOOK 4: A WILL TO MURDER
Nobody liked Charlotte Lane. Not her niece Elizabeth. And not Elizabeth’s friends. As a nasty trick, they stage the old lady’s disappearance. Finding her dead at the bottom of the garden well was not part of the plan. As mutual suspicion spreads among the group, Inspector Pitt has to separate the false clues from the real ones.

BOOK 5: MURDER FOR MISS EMILY
The village of Cheswick can’t conceal its satisfaction when John Cluster is found dead in Miss Emily Mytton’s bed. Since it’s her poultry knife protruding from his back, Miss Emily is the obvious culprit. But Inspector Pitt is not so sure. He’s gotten rather good at knowing when a community like this one is keeping secrets.

BOOK 6: DEATH OF A GOOD WOMAN
Grace Cawthorne is discovered dead at the foot of a cliff. Her stormy marriage immediately points to her husband as the killer. But Inspector Pitt wants to rule out the mysterious characters living with the Cawthornes at Mulgerry House. And he isn’t the only detective looking to dig a little deeper.

Great read for the money

Stories and characters well told. Variety of cases.
Would but more by Straker. You can see each character via their descriptions of person and character.
I thought I had cracked the style at the last book, picked up the killer right away. But this one kept me wondering right through.
