الكتاب يقع في ستة فصول

الفصل الأول يتناول فكرة إنشاء التليسكوب و هي فكرة قديمة من العشرينات و زاد التفكير بها بعدما خطا أرمسترونج وألدرين أولى خطواتهما على القمر
و يحكي عن بداية التنفيذ و المشاكل المالية و الفنية و الإدارية التى أعاقت عملية إطلاق التليسكوب التى كانت مقررة في 1983 ليطلق فعليا عام 1990
و كيف أن خطأ صغير في إختبار المرآة الرئيسية في التليسكوب مقدارة 1.3 مليمتر تسبب في تشوه قدرة التليسكوب في إلتقاط الصورة بنسبة 25% و هي نسبة كبيرة فعلا
و كيف تمت عملية الصيانة الأولى في 1993 لتحسن من قدرة التليسكوب على التصوير و مراقبة الأجرام الفلكية المتعددة
أما الفصل الثاني فيتناول الأجهزة العلمية المختلفة للتصوير داخل التليسكوب و طرق و نظريات عملها و هو أصعب الفصول بعد الفصل السادس
و الفصول الثالث و الرابع و الخامس فتناقش على الترتيب المجموعة الشمسية والنجوم والمجرات
أما الفصل السادس و الأخير و هو اصعبهم جميعا فيتناول علم الكون
كما ذُيل الكتاب بمعجم للمصطلحات حتى يتمكن القارئ غير المتخصص في فهم الكتاب
و يحتوى على أهم المصطلحات الواردة بالكتاب
