What would you do if everything - and everyone - you loved was taken from you?
Rand Sebastian, ex-Navy SEAL and now a full-time family man, is about to discover that evil lurks in the world. Real evil. And when this darkness comes after him and his family, he will do everything he can to stop it...and to save his loved ones.
Now trained by the legendary Brotherhood of the Blade in a remote castle setting, Rand will learn all the skills necessary to find his missing daughter...and to stop the killers who prey on mankind.
This is a book from the Brotherhood of the Blade series. I wasn’t sure what to think of this book. Rand is fighting vampires and then carried off by one. She dumps him on a cruise ship. I’m like…what? As you read you are introduced to the vampire slayers that recruit Rand to join them. It’s sad what he loses in order to do so. I think the storyline was interesting that centers around Rand and how his inventions are used to kill vampires. I just felt the story jerked in places. Its flow wasn’t as smooth as it could have been. The author had the storyline jump from one thing to another in some places with out preparing the reader with enough information. I would lose interest after a while. It took me a long time to read this book a it just wouldn’t hold my interest for very long. I also became annoyed as the author revealed emotions that could’ve been strong and explored, like grief and fear, but it wasn’t really taken anywhere. Rand’s reactions to some of the things in the book didn’t match what the author was trying to convey. I live vampire books just not this one. I give it a 2 out of 5.
It wasn't until I finished the last book of the trilogy that I realized that it wasn't actually written by JR Rain-author of the Samantha Moon series. That explained a few things. From the very first, with the story of how Rand comes to be on the cruise ship/Sam's involvement, I thought, OK, we're stretching things a bit here, but I'll play along...by the time I got to the part where 2 characters are killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, I was thinking, really?? I almost laughed out loud...it was so implausible. And that's the problem with this series...it's written like a soap opera script, with the author asking us to go along with forced plot twists just to move the story along. This is not the worst thing I've ever read, but very disappointing.
Just an FYI, Rain writes a forward in ALL books in his Vampire for Hire world, especially in ones he did NOT write personally. He makes it clear that these are NON-CANNON - NOT officially a part of Sam's world, but FAN FICTION. He, himself, enjoys reading the ideas of what others think could be part of this world. At first, it really frustrated me, even though I read his forwards. But, then I just went with the flow. Just enjoy the read and think of how it could fit into Sam's world. I have AND thought of edits to make it more accurate for Rain's actually timeliness and character traits.
These books in the world of Samantha Moon are very well written and entertaining. Every book is a guarantee of good entertainment. No hard thinking required which is a good thing when a person just wants to be entertained. Thanks.
I've been a fan of J.R. Rain and the Samantha Moon series since book one. A mother, private investigator, turned vampire and trying to lead a normal life. What's not to love? So, when I read the summary for "Burning," Brother of the Blades book one, I knew I had to read this book.
This book dovetails nicely with Samantha Moon book 1 or 2 when she is attacked by a vampire Hunter. What is new is that we get to read the Hunter, Rand, side of the story and what happened next when he is dropped off on a cruise ship.
It seems that as clever as Rand thinks he is, Samantha outfits him. She has known from the start he was tracking her and was paid to deliver him aboard the ship headed for Hilo, Hawaii. What he discovers is his dead brother's fiancee, Gabrielle, who needs his help to kill the vampire responsible for taking his life. The vamp is none other than Vladimir Tempest or Dracula.
Things go horribly wrong and Rand is separated from Gabrielle. He heads home to his wife and child only to discover his wife is now dead, his house has burned to the ground and his daughter has been kidnapped by the vamps. With the help of the brotherhood, Rand vows to rescue her.
I enjoyed this book especially with the cameo appearances of Samantha Moon. There is plenty of action and intrigue in this little gem. My only problem and biggest problem was the abrupt was in which the story ended. I found myself saying, "Really, you are going to just stop in the middle of things!" Don't get me wrong, I don't mind cliffhanger endings at all when they are set up nicely. However, this story just stopped mid scene.
Despite my issue with the ending, I would still recommend this read. It is a very promising start to a new series and worthy of consideration.

First off, I picked up this book for free on Amazon, not realizing that it's pretty much a spin off from another series. As I was reading, I got this weird feeling that I already knew what was going on, even though you're sort of dropped in the middle of a scene. As a read a few more pages, I had a dawning realization that I HAD read another book, where the ending of the story was the beginning of this one - but wait, they're different authors, right? Yep, but that's why it says 'presented by' (that's my guess anyway).
Anyhow, this book has a lot of funny moments that I insisted on reading out loud to my fiance. He chuckled. There are some more serious moments, but they didn't get to me that much - mostly because they seemed to be glossed over/not described in too much detail.
I really like the main character, Rand, and the plethora of pop culture references is really cool; makes the story relatable even though I'm not married and don't have any kids..and don't hunt vampires. Although many of the emotional trials aren't that "good" for me, I did feel like the author has a ton of descriptions and brings this world to life. Interested in reading the next book!
This is an exciting spinoff series from Samantha Moon, J. R. Rain's Vampire for Hire series. Rand Sebastian is an ex-Navy Seal turned vampire hunter. He seeks revenge for the deaths of his parents & brother at the hands of vampires. When he stalks Samantha Moon, she turns the table on him changing to her huge bat form and carries him far out to sea and drops him on a cruise ship. Rand discovers later that Samantha was working for a group of vampire hunters who want to recruit him to join their group, called Brotherhood of the Blade. Rand thinks he is meant to hunt alone without others.
Through a series of battles, events and surprises, he ends up working with them when his dead brother's fiancé is kidnapped by the worst of the ancient vampires; none other than Vladimir Tepes, otherwise known as Count Dracula.
It is the story of Rand finding a home in the Brotherhood after he discovers that a group of vampires has murdered his wife, burned down his house, and kidnapped his young daughter. He vows revenge and so joins the Brotherhood, who vow to help him in his quest.
So very typical of a vampire sort of books. The plot line is pretty bad.
How did Rand got to love Ambra so soon? Nothing in between, then came Samantha Moon's saying he love her and the spooning moment, what the hell?
Rand's daughter took her kindle with her while gotten kidnapped. And her mom was killed in the process. I find it unbelievable the vampire would allow her to take her kindle while kidnapping her...
It's fiction, but that is seriously.. I don't get it. I got it free on my kindle on Amazon sure, but this book doesn't really offer anything that sets it apart from others.
I don't recommend it as a single read though. It's pretty bland, and just when it got interesting the book got cut off and continue in the sequel. But as a single read, don't waste your time on this book.

I was excited to see that J.R Rain presented this, and that Samantha Moon was involved. I love her character, and she was portrayed perfectly in this book. Rand has now lost all his loved ones to vampires... first his parents, followed by his brother, and now his wife and daughter. It's easy to see why he's a vampire hunter. After his house his engulfed in flames, he leaves for Switzerland to join the Brotherhood of the Blade, an elite vampire hunting group. Hopefully they will help him avenge his family....
Intensely good read I have been a fan of J.R. Rain's characters and books for a while now so I was a bit nervous when I saw that another writer was developing one of his characters. Eve Paludan did justice to Rand in the development and to J.R.'s Samantha in continuing her charcter. The first two chapters will hook you and prove that Eve has nailed the characters. This book has it all- humor, heartbreak, compassion, and suspense. We even meet a few historical characters (I won't spoil it for you)protrayed in a new light. Get the book!
Apparently this author did not read the book series (especially the first book) from which this is a spin-off, or is intentionally making statements about things that did not happen in "Moon Dance" by J. R. Rain, between the main character in that book and this one. In my opinion it has hurt this story as these mis-statements are made reference to a few times in the book, and are frustrating to say the least.
To the Author: Next time get your fact right if you plan on basing your work off of someone elses story.
The length was deceiving.... the book itself ended at only 65% on my Kindle and the rest of the book was previews and such. I'm glad it finished when it did though. The book was far too boring for me, even the "action" scenes were not exciting in the least bit. I couldn't feel for the main character either. After the first couple chapters I just wanted it to be done and over with so I could move on to the next book.... I'm sure glad I caught this while it was free and I didn't pay for it.
The best part about this story was the kindle - conversation and the communication with his daughter. The basic idea was good, but the rest was just too: too much of a clichée, too much of weird happenings after another, too unbelievable. So, due to basic idea and the clever kindle-communication: two stars.
Disappointing. I really enjoyed Rain's Samantha Moon series and was looking forward to this spin off series featuring a minor character from that series. The writing style didn't work at all for me. It's stilted and cartoonish. I'm a quarter of the way through and just absolutely bored.
I loved how the Samantha Moon series was woven into this tale of Brand. A vampire hunter who was smart but was setup to join the coven of vampire hunters. He lost his whole family and almost his sanity. Great details and very descriptive.
Good series. With Samantha Moon from J R Rain series introducing this new series. I liked it but again..it seemed short like all J R Rain books these days.
A great spin off from J.R Rain's Sam Moon books, great new characters, and plot line, I enjoyed it, looking forward to the next editions to see how the story goes.
Good book with a great story but was a lil too short - soon as u got into the real details and encompassed in the story it ended with a cliffhanger for the next one.
Eve Paludan did an excellent job writing Rand's story. Her inclusion of Samantha Moon was well done. I will definitely keep an eye out for more from this author.
Just re-read this yesterday to get back into the world so I'd be fresh for book 2 an 3. 2210 on 2/6/16 Still everybit as awesome as the first time I read it 3 years ago.
