Loki's Wolves #2

Hunger Moon

Rate this book
Victoria Storm faces seemingly insurmountable odds to keep her dwindling pack of werewolves alive and together. She fights hunters- including the brother and father of her deceased lover-and the pack takes another devastating loss.

When they seek sanctuary in a small town near Lake Tahoe, high in the secluded Sierra Nevada Mountains, Victoria discovers they are infringing on the territory of a vastly more powerful Alpha wolf.

To save her pack, she uses her feminine wiles to seduce the Alpha. Nothing comes easily for Victoria. Her plans are complicated by the Alpha's erratic son, a ghostly wife, and a vengeful witch. Not even her status as a Valkyrie or the favor of the Goddess Freya can change the course of destiny for Victoria or her packmates.

"Some things are meant to be."

~Arik

Hunger Moon is book 2 in the Norse Werewolves series, a series I'm quickly becoming obsessed with. I've recently come to realize that I'm an instant gratification kind of reader (and writer apparently but that's a whole 'nother blog post.*wink*) and Ms. Snark is my kind of author. I noted in the review of book 1, The Child Thief, that she doesn't go on and on with pointless ramblings that to me, is just to pad word count. Her on point method continues with this newest installment.

Things continue to look bleak for Victoria and her pack but they may find the safety they seek but of course it won't come easy. The problem begins with Victoria. Above all else, she wants to provide for and protect what is left of her pack. If that means seeking out an alpha male, of whom she's never even met, to be her mate and possible challenge her for her for alpha, then she'll do it. Maybe not with bells on, but she'll do it.

Arik Koenig comes with his own set of baggage. For one, he's a lawyer...strike one. His wife was murdered and her spirit comes a knockin'...strike two. Last but not least, her would be stepson Logan is not only hot, cocky and the epitome of arrogant, he's also said to be his own mothers killer...strike three. Victoria briefly escapes the drama surrounding the hunters only to stumble into a more that in many ways, is much more complicated and deadly.

Hunger Moon kept great pace and had my emotions up, down and back again. There were shocking twists and turns that rounded out the story quite nicely. Ms. Snark keeps killing characters! My mouth dropped open more than once and even now, I'm curious as to where this goes. When you think you know, guess what, you don't! New characters are introduced and this world takes on more shape. On a side note, this is a shifter series and I love shifter books. That being said, there was one scene that was a little to authentic for me, when it came to feeding. Literally threw up in my mouth a little bit (ironic)...and that's all I have to say about that.

The romantic (and steam factor...HOT!!!) aspect of this series was kicked up a notch and I bounced back and forth numerous times before I picked my guy. When you find yourself asking, "Wait, is he the one I'm supposed to like best, or that one? Wait, no that's the right one...right?!" for me, that's a good thing. Arik is dark and powerful, alpha male from the ground up. He's a delicious male lead. In many ways, his son Logan couldn't be more opposite of his dad but at the same time, for me at least, he remains the stand out character overall, not just in regards to male lead. He's fascinating and quite the enigma and that smart ass mouth of his is just gravy. ;-)

Bring on book 3!

This was such a great book! And lots of it too! I love finding novels with 200-400 pages. Miss Snark packs a lot of story in there too. I promise you won't be disappointed. My emotions we all over the place. I was dying to peek ahead to the end to find out what happens and who Victoria mates with. But I didn't this timed boy am I glad. So if you are one who tends to do that, like me, don't do it this time. It will ruin the tell. The suspense got intense several times. I just couldn't stand it. Then I thought all was resolved and it was over but then I saw I want quite done. This happened several times. There was a time or two I just wanted to throw my iPad across the room. But then it got better. It's not so bad like most books make you want to throw things. This one has twists and turns. There always an alternative to what we are thinking. Omg, I'm dying to just tell what happens! Please, if you haven't read this then you need it badly for your next reading fix. There is a prequel, which I have and is free. So grab it up. This book takes place where that one left off I guess. I haven't read the prequel yet so I will say that this can be read as a stand alone. And there are no cliffhangers so yay for that. I look forward to the next book so much. I love mythology and Vikings and this mixed in just the perfect blend of that. I want to be a Valkyrie so badly now. I'm curious about a character in the book who was only in a few scenes. I feel like he will be in the next book a lot. Can't say who and can't wait to find out. Well, actually, I'm curious about two characters. Oh you will love Hunger Moon. I read it in the bundle of books of different authors called Edge of Never. I've only read one other book in the bundle and I'm very pleased to have it. I think it's only $0.99 now. I'm in heaven with all these books.

I LOVED IT!! This is one series you are not going to want to miss! Brilliantly planned and written book! Action packed and full of surprises. And who doesn't love Norse mythology and werewolves?! Ok, so I'll admit it, I cheated and have already read the next one (Battle Cry). Just whatever you do, don't try to predict any of this series by Melissa Snark. She will far surpass your expectations and delivers in spades. I'm totally addicted to this series and it should come with a warning label! Excellent author! Excellent series! No spoilers here

I am not one for Norse Mythology and I did not really enjoy it anymore after reading this book - But WOW, despite this Melissa has created a wonderfully gritty pack structure that drew me in and made the whole story much more authentic for me. I will definitely be reading the next book to see what happens to Victoria, well done Melissa this book is a great read.

I haven’t had the opportunity to read the first book, but I can say that Hunger Moon works as a standalone story, although you will have lots of questions at the end.

This story is about Victoria Storm and her dwindling and persecuted pack. She is a strong female alpha shifter that is also a healer, Valkyrie and Priestess of Freya. Goddess Freya, whose guidance can be ambiguous at times and almost always frustrating, has directed Victoria to Sierra Pines, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains for sanctuary and to find a powerful dominant male wolf that help her provide for the pack. As Freya never speaks in a linear way, Victoria believes that Arik Koenig is the man she has been sent to find. She quickly finds he has a number of problems including his arrogant son, a dead wife likely murdered by that same son, and a few other issues too. Then again, maybe it’s his son Logan, a potential berserker, she is supposed to help and possible mate with. After all, Freya did name the person she was supposed to help or who her mate was.

This book keeps you guessing on what's going to happen. Will Victoria and Arik mate, or Logan is her future mate, or neither. If only the Goddess would give clear advice. This story is well written, fast moving, and attention grabbing and took me on a journey that had me turning page after page. I most certainly recommend this book, and I must have get the next part of the story!

Victoria Storm is a werewolf that has reluctantly turned into an Alpha after most of her pack was killed by hunters. She will do anything to keep them safe which has led her to Sierra Pines, CA in hopes of finding an Alpha that can provide for her pack.

Arik Koenig is a lawyer in Sierra Pines, CA and is an alpha to his son, Logan. The two try and keep a low profile in town which has been hard since the death of his wife, Lori.

When Victoria comes to town she knows that secrets are being kept and as she tries to keep her pack safe she may be in over her head with all the mystery that surrounds Arik and Logan. Will Victoria be able to help Arik and Logan solve the mysteries of the past or is she just putting her own pack in danger?

This was a very interesting book dealing with paranormal elements. This was the first book I have read in the series so I was intrigued by Victoria going to Asgard and how that worked.

I definitely thought something was up with the death of Lori and I wasn't surprised with the revelation of who was behind everything. There is still one thing that hasn't been dealt with in regards to Logan and Victoria and I hope that it will be in the next book.

Looking forward to more!

What an epic tale! Well and passionately written, Victoria’s story is filled with action, passion, magic and, above all, love. It tells of loyalty, sacrifice, commitment and family. Any fans of the paranormal should put this high of their list of books to be read. I intend to devour the rest of the series. Melissa Snark is a masterful storyteller and her passion for her craft I’s obvious. It’s clear she puts a lot of blood, sweat, toil and tears into her craft.

The sad thing is Victoria had loved a hunter once upon a time until he died and now his family is blaming her and will stop at nothing to end her.

Go on this journey with Victoria and her pack. Find out what comes of the hunters and whether peace can be found.

This story was action packed and the shifter mythology that came from Norse history. Victoria was both strong and damsel in distress at the same time. This story also included witches, demons, zombies and Norse gods. The end was a total surprise and a warning it does NOT have HEA since it leaves in somewhat of a cliffhanger.

What a fantastic story! Victoria was such a great character who put her pack first. She wore many hats as both an alpha she was also a medium and a Valkyrie. The story had lots of action and plenty of great characters with some mystery thrown in. I loved it!! I am voluntarily reviewing an arc I received from the author.

***THIS BOOK WAS PROVIDED TO NERD GIRL IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***

Hunger Moon, Melissa Snark's first full-length novel in the Loki's Wolves Series.

I love this series, so hard!

Victory and her wolves suffer one set-back after another, and the writing is so very thought provoking. The characters are evocative and likable, and the world building is so very intense.

I cannot wait to read more, not only in this series, but by this author.

As alpha of her pack, Valkyrie Victoria Storm is responsible for its safety, a responsibility that is getting harder to fulfill since war with her dead lover’s family has reduced the numbers and kept the pack on the run. Added to her responsibilities is her position as priestess to the Goddess Freya, whose guidance can be ambiguous at times and almost always frustrating. Now with young pups to feed Victoria does the only thing she can to help her pack, she leads them to Sierra Pines, California to attempt an alliance with Arik Koenig, a wealthy, powerful dominant male.

Arik has secrets though, his wife died under mysterious circumstances, his son Logan has problems and he is not completely forthcoming. Victoria has to decide if she can lay it all on the line with him to protect her pack and finds herself in the middle of trying to solve Arik’s wife’s murder and proving his son’s innocence in the process.

Ms. Stark introduced us to Victoria in her short novella The Child Thief, and continues the story with Hunger Moon. The story is told through Victoria’s POV and we find ourselves right in the middle of her battle with the Barrett’s (her dead lover’s family) from the first sentence. This sets the tone for the book, showing us Victoria’s strength and compassion from the get go.

After her mother and father were killed Victoria became the Alpha and Freya’s priestess in one swoop, no one asked if she was up for the challenge. The pack is loyal to her and trusts and depends on her. We watch as she struggles with her duties while trying to forge a relationship with Arik and journeys to Valhalla and back during the story. She is no push over in either human or wolf form and knows how to take care of herself. Arik is the perfect male for her, strong and confident he is a force to be reckoned with and his only failing seems to be his relationship with his son Logan. Logan, on the other hand, is surly and a wild card, he and Victoria are oil and water from the moment they meet.

We get to know the few remaining members of the pack as well as the Barrett son, Sawyer as the story progresses. We get a good glimpse of the dynamics of Victoria and the Goddess Freya through conversations which introduce each chapter. As Freya’s priestess, Victoria has the ability to travel back and forth between Valhalla and this plane at will and sees her parents and interacts with others from the pack who have not survived. There are some pretty good scenes set there in which Victoria gets to show a softer, more playful side of herself.

There is a lot going on in this story, we have a nasty witch causing all sorts of problems for Arik and Logan, the Barrett war, Victoria and Arik trying to decide if they should mate, Victoria and Logan snarking at each other, Victoria’s pack's issues, and the strange visits to Valhalla. I had a few problems following it all and at times it was just too much. I found myself wondering why Ms. Snark choose to set her wolves afterlife in Valhalla. I’ll admit when I think wolf shifters I don’t associate Vikings with them, in my mind I see some sort of mystical spirit sort of thing, and it did trip me up whenever it came into the story.

Strange visits to Valhalla aside, I found this story an interesting one and it certainly kept me on my toes. I ran through a gambit of emotions, at times it is not an easy story and I’m not ashamed to admit I shed a tear or two, along with some laughter and anger along the way. I have a feeling Victoria is in for another wild ride in her future and I’m more than happy to go along with her.

This is the first full length novel in the Victoria Storm series by Melissa Snark. I received this book and it's prequel, The Child Thief, from the author in exchange for an honest review. The first story, The Child Thief is very short, just a little over 26 pages long. It was a nice introduction to Victoria, but really not necessary for the story line of the novel.

The story opens with Victoria in a fight with Sawyer, the brother of her former lover, Daniel. He is the remaining child of Jake Barrett, a Hunter, who has suddenly turned on Victoria's pack. The Barrett's hold Victoria and her pack responsible for Daniel's death. Most of Victoria's pack is gone, including her parents, leaving Victoria to lead and protect the pack. Victoria is also a Valkyrie in service to Freya. As Freya's priestess, she speaks with her goddess and even can travel to Asgard, since she escorts the souls of slain warriors to Valhalla via the Bifrost. Victoria ends up saving the life of Sawyer, because the ghost of Daniel requests it of her. This confuses Sawyer and he takes off.

Freya sends Victoria and her pack to California in search of a mate to strengthen the pack. When Victoria gets to Sierra Pines, she finds that the Alpha she is in search of, has only 1 member in his pack, his son. The Alpha, Arik Koenig, turns out to be an attorney and brother-in-law to the local sheriff. Victoria likes the look of the Alpha, but there are issues to be addressed and worked out. Including the belief that Arik's son, Logan could be a feared berserker and killed his own mother during his first change.

This was an interesting take on Viking mythology. The werewolves are descendants of Fenrir and stay close to the Norse traditions and beliefs. There were a couple of spots that dragged a little, mainly due to more background information being given, but otherwise it was a very interesting read. I really liked that the author wasn't afraid to remove characters and took some very daring chances with her characters. I am looking forward to the sequel to see where the story line is headed. I gave this book 3 stars on Goodreads.

Hunger Moon begins in a burning building with Victoria Storm holding a knife on a hunter who has been targeting her pack. Victoria Storm is a Valkyrie and Priestess for the Goddess Freya. She is also the Alpha of her pack of werewolves. In being the Alpha it is her responsibility to protect what is left of her pack. After one of her pack dies and she ushers him to Valhalla she is pointed in the direction of Sierra Pines, California. She knows that there lies her lifemate, whomever that may be. When she meets Arik Koenig she realizes immediately that he is her lifemate and very strong werewolf. With Arik comes his son Logan. Victoria immediately realizes things aren’t as perfect as they seem with the Koenigs and secrets threaten the safety of her pack. She must decide to continue running from the hunters with no help or stay and figure out the secrets of Arik and Logan Koenig. It is Victoria’s decision that will change the course of the pack and impact her life forever.

I really loved this book. I didn’t realize this book was actually the second book in this series. I was very impressed that this book almost read like a standalone book. There were very few things that referred to the first book. I fell in love with these characters and the story. Victoria’s and Arik’s mini-courtship was quite steamy at times and you could understand why Victoria felt the way she did. I really did feel for her though. I felt bad that the relationship was kinda one-sided. No matter how this story would have ended it would always be Victoria caring more for Arik and Arik still pining for his deceased wife. I hope that with the next Victoria finds something a bit more lasting. I get the feeling that Victoria has had so much loss it is time for something positive . No matter what though I know I will be reading Melissa Snark’s next Victoria Storm book. I even feel the need to go back and read the first one. I would whole-heartedly recommend this book for any PNR fan. Once you pick it up you will be like me and itching for more!

I loved this book.

This is the first book I've read by Melissa Snark, and I actually got it in a very roundabout way. One of my neighbors got a review copy from the author, and thought I might enjoy it (do you think the Anne Rice, Laurill K Hamilton, and J. K. Rowling books all over the apartment gave me away?)

I'll definitely be waiting for the next book in the series. Hunger Moon is well written, the storyline flows smoothly, and the book sucked me right into the alternate reality that Ms. Snark has created. I sat down with it about 2pm, and was so absorbed that I finished it around 8 that evening. I even found myself holding it in one hand reading while I cooked dinner.

Hunger Moon has it all. Werewolves, werewolf hunters, ghosts, witches, ghouls, mystery, suspense, trips to Valhalla . . . With so many things going on, it would have been easy for the book to feel forced, or for some of the characters and plot twists to feel like they'd just been tossed in to draw readers that go for that character or genre. Instead, each character and twist fits and flows seamlessly, creating a world that is realistic and believable.

Any book that starts with the heroine trapped in a burning building facing someone who wants to kill her is going to pull me in; but if the writing is bad, or the plot weak, I'm not going to last past the first chapter or so. Even the best writing and the most powerful plot won't hold me if the characters aren't believable and complex though.

With Hunger Moon, by page 7, I LIKED Victoria, and wanted to know more about her. I wanted to know how a werewolf and a hunter had managed to meet and fall in love, how and why the hunter had died, and why his brother was trying to kill Victoria. I wanted to know why Victoria had risked her own life, returning to a burning building to save the life of the man who had been involved in killing her entire family and most of her pack, and was was trying to kill her. But most of all, I wanted to know how she was going to protect her pack, and save the few remaining members.

This is the second book in the Loki's werewolves series, you can find my review for the first one at http://lauraoflurkng.blogspot.co.uk/2...

I was kindly gifted a copy of this book in return for an unbiased review.

This is the second book in the Loki's Werewolves series, and while the first one was good I felt this was a big step up in writing quality. The connections between the characters and their species, as well as the wolf hierarchy really showed in this novel, making fascinating reading as character chose to submit or not depending on rank. And not all the dangerous ones are supernatural, there's danger at every turn

The character's were well crafted: Victoria, the Valkyrie werewolf who give a lovely insight into both the living and those who died both in this book and the last, Arik, the hot suitor with more secrets than he has sleeves for, a grumpy librarian, breaking the tension of the story for a little bit, and the fact that you have amputee werewolves that just get on with life.

The book has a lovely action feel, starting off with a vicious fight and carrying problems, whether they be ones of growling animals or stomachs all the way through. Problems of the heart, war with problems of survival as Victoria, the almost accidental Alpha of the pack, has to find a mate to keep her pack alive. That just leads to more trouble, cover up, trouble, fighting, and did I mention trouble?

This book sent me from laughter to being choked up, to tension, everything I like in a good novel. I am looking forward to the next in the series, especially having read the excerpt in the back of the novel. I think this is a series to keep your eye on.

I would give this book 4.5 stars but increase it to 5 stars for the sake of rating sites

So glad I enter the contest and my prize was a autograph book from Melissa Snark. I read this before the full book was release! I intend to read all of the books in this series. I am looking forward to the reading book #2 and seeing what's in store for Loki Woves. You've gotten me glued into this series Ms. Melissa Snark, nice job!

My review since my reading the book and its release,

I found the storyline extremely intriguing. I was very anxious to see what happened between Arik and Victoria. This storyline had me on the edge of my seat and glued to the book page by page until the end. A good story will never have a always hook a reader.

I really enjoyed Ms. Snark writing great and it's very intense and lots of drama. Victoria is a strong alpha as is Arik and so is Arik son Logan. Victoria and her pack is in need of a place to settle and regroup after fighting with the hunters and losing so much of their packs. Victoria has came to Arik territory because her Goddess has told Victoria that Arik is her life mate, but Logan Arik son has other ideas. Arik realizes Victoria is in heat, but Arik wants Victoria to submit to him and that's the one thing her wolf doesn't want to do, the witch uses this to manipulate the three of them which results in father and son fighting, but Logan just wants to die, because he believes that he kill his mother. The excitement level is just awesome. Logan thinks Victoria wants his dad just for his money because Victoria can't mate with a guy she barely know rich and handsome be damned. I find some of the story amusing, but I do get that it's a form of comic relief for me. I'm also a huge fan of cliffhanger endings it' make you hungry for the next book in the series.
THIS IS ANOTHER MUST READ ON THE LIST.

A series you won’t want to miss!

101k and I wanted to keep reading! Victoria comes from a long, royal line of werewolves, but that means nothing in her new desperate situation. She is now the Alpha, struggling to protect the few pack members she has left. Hunters are attacking her at every turn, pack members are dying, and being on the run makes it hard to provide even food for her pack and the new litter on the way.

A message from her goddess just might be the answer. She is sent to find a strong male Alpha in a small town in California. This is the point where me, the chronic romantic starts screaming and hollering, “Hell yeah!” The man she finds is all the goddess described and more. He can offer food, security, safety… There are just two problems. 1. He has a son who she doesn’t see eye to eye with, and 2. Her new Alpha has a secret and a past that just may be her and her packs undoing unless she can figure out the truth. Was she sent there for help or was she sent there to help him?

This exciting journey had me laughing, crying, cheering, and holding my breath. Everything a great story should. Victoria is the indomitable hero, a short, beautiful Alpha female put in the worst of situations, trying to hold her pack together while everything is falling apart. She is a fighter, a warrior, and she never gives up, and I cannot wait to read more in this series. What an amazing adventure. I highly recommend this series!
