I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP).
Despite the fact that the shifters are no vampires, this book smacked of Black Dagger Brotherhood to me. From the brothers (strongest example stands out in the tech guy of the group, named Xavier, dubbed X, who wears a goatee), to the mansion (1920’s era vs. Gothic-inspired yet that grand staircase with its ceiling fresco was a bit difficult to ignore, as were the clinic, offices, and training room under the house), to the flashing reminder of the Red Sox, to the lingo spoken among the characters, the butler, the unwilling leader, the goddess who makes her first appearance during the “induction” of the two main characters in this novel (it helplessly took me back to the Scribe Virgin at the mating ceremony of Wrath and Beth), to the very obvious glossary of terms at the start (which, granted, is done by a lot of authors, but everything else just compared so obviously, that this couldn’t help but fall into the lap of it all among the rest)… It all made it so difficult for me to be immersed in the story and stop comparing. I kept pointing at the book and thinking “Ha! There’s another BDB reference!” It just had the vibe, although I will state that the Black Dagger Brotherhood stands alone, regardless. And this is all a shame, because I really wanted to love this book and the rest of the installments in the series. But, putting this aside, I will get to the meat of the story itself.
The novel did not feel like a finished draft. The writing was quite too bumpy and abrupt to flow smoothly for me, as a reader. There wasn't a lot of insight into what characters were feeling or thinking during a dialogue or an introspective moment before the scene switched and I was catapulted into another instance. Because of this, I had a lot of trouble enjoying the characters, getting to know them, feeling for them. I still don't remember what half of the brothers looked like due to how fast they were presented to me, one after the other in a rush, and they never stayed long enough for my liking.
Then there were Ana and SE themselves. We get a crash course on the fact that she knows him, she doesn't struggle too much with her decision to take him to her apartment even though he's the enemy, and by chapter two--BAM--they're having sex. Now, this has been known to be a huge problem for me with a couple of other books that I've read. The quickness with which characters go for the horizontal tango, not the sex itself. The difference, however, was that this was the first time I read a book that took things there so incredibly fast. And because this was done, I didn't feel the connection between Ana and SE that I'm sure the author would have wanted to shine through. I also didn't really get how they were mated. I know that they had sex, but I didn't quite see how such a strong, visceral, connection was made between him and her, let alone how they could have fallen in love so quickly. This, once more, is due to the fact that I don't see them struggle too much--especially SE with the death of his first mate. I'm sure he must have struggled while he was in permaphase, but just because I can guess at it, doesn't mean I don't want it to be shown to me so that I can really believe it.
Now, Victrixia, who obviously stood out to me and everyone who read Forbidden Call, has promise, and I do look forward to reading more of her in the second book. I'm always very interested in what an author can do, and will do, with the antagonist in a novel, because they carry a lot of weight in twisting and shaping the story. But, once again, I want to know more about her. And I'm aware that you can't give up all the goods in Book One, but there wasn't enough either. If she's going to be such an instrumental part of things, then I needed more from her--I at least needed to see more of her during the brief instances when she popped up.
The novel does have some good points, and some things to look forward to: the first baby of the New Breed, Troy (who I am a bit of a fan of), the bond that will surely form between Helen and Diesel, the shape that this war might take. I just don't know how I will feel about the rest of the books if the style and writing doesn't take a turn. I want to know these characters more, I want to fall in love with them. I don't want to have to keep switching back and forth between glossary and novel to know what something means, because it can so easily start to be written out throughout the story so that the reader has an easier transition into the meaning of things and start to naturally learn them. I want relationships to pause now and again, to have time to develop, and the same goes for dialogue.
I'm very thankful to the author for having given me this book to read, and I'll be more than happy to read the second one and give my thoughts as well. Hopefully, my review is well received, because I can't help but truly be honest about my personal experience with any novel that I read.
And so now, on to start reading Deadly Call.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Having not read the Jaguar Sun yet I wasn't sure what to expect.. but wow is all I can come up with. Such an interesting take on the shifter world.
Ana and SE were just awesome..right from the start the pull was incredible. Ana part of the shifter world of Toltec and SE part of the New Breed.. not a good combo at all. New Breeds were created by the Goddess to take out the Toltec and the evilness of Victrixa who lead them. Plenty of POV which really gets you into the characters.. and Plenty of characters yet all very crucial to the storyline. My other two fav's were Richard and Adriana.. like the mom and pop of the group of New Breeds even though they were under Reyn's order. The thrills of this story lie in the abduction of Adriana, the choices that Ana will have to make for herself to get to the real Ana.. and the uniting of the New Breed family into a solid bounding unit. I really can't say too much because well its just that kind of story its a short one.. q nice afternoon read. Definitely a great way to start a series.. at least I hope that is the plan.. ;)
WARNING THIS REVEIW CONTAINS A SPOILER!!!! I was given this book in exchange for an honest review LOP. First things first...... OMG THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH STARS TO RATE THIS NOVEL 10000000000 stars loved it loved it loved it!!!!!!! Favourite Line: SE slides his hands along her jaw. "Repeat after me. I, Ana mata, will never go near my batshit crazy mother again" Ana smiles" I, Ana Aguilar will... What you said."
I am in love with SE and Ana, there relationship is so deep. I loved how the author wove in so many details into the story without over whelming the reader. Every character had a description that allowed you to actually picture them. Troy was a more in the background character but you still got a sense of who he was by the descriptions given by the author. The route the author decided to go in with why the shape shifters were the way they were was something totally unique. I have never read a book that has taken that type of spin on it. I loved her idea of all different shifters and having a second soul that is connected to the other realm. As well as the shifters coming from regular family's and transitioning into the shifter added a emotional depth into the novel that was amazing. I also loved that the shifters animals were tattooed into them in a magical way after there first shift.
The relationships in this book were mind blowing. The mating bond was described in a way I have never read before. The relationship and background between SE and Richard and his mate was very well detailed. It also let you see into SE mysterious past and see what made him the man he is today. Also the relationship between all the warriors was amazing. You could see the companionship they seem to have with one another and I loved that they jokes around and pokes fun at each other. I think that aspect made the relationship seem so real to me. The complicated relationship between Ana, Richard and his mate added once again another layer into all their story's and showed how they grow to be close at the end of the novel. And last but not lease the mating bond between SE and Ana was by far my favourite. SE not knowing really who he is when the mating occurred and all the memory's flooding back to him once he is in the mansion was amazingly written. With the loss of his first mate and finding out his second mate is the little orphaned girl from the compound and that she was a spy was beyond brilliant in my eyes. The author added so much depth to their relationship it literally jumped off the pages.
The plot was amazingly written. There were ups and downs that no one would expect. I loved how the author allowed many peaks in action leading up to the big climax. Also when you are reading and not knowing if Ana has been given the mutating serum or not it keeps you on the edge of your seat. When they find out Ana is to be the first female new breed my jaw dropped. I can say I was never expecting that and it just blew my mind. I give the author credit that was by far the most amazing twist of events I have read in a novel in a long time. While SE and Ana are being initiated into the brotherhood and the goddess shows up to do the final acts of the ceremony and to tell Richards mate she will have her baby tonight was yet another twist that left my jaw gaping. I love love loved everything about the twists and turns, ups and downs and the emotion roller coaster the author takes you on in this novel. I can not wait to read the next one. I think I'm adding this author to my "to watch" list. By far one of my favourite books of the summer. Thank you so much for allowing me to review this book!!!!!
This story had potential but sadly it was taken right out of Lara Adrian's playbook. If you've read any of Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series you'll understand. Both series take place in Boston, the main characters are both referred to as Breed, they both call their home base the compound, they have the evil version of their race after them, etc. There was even a little of the BDB series thrown in with the house and the butler. The only major difference was that the heroes in this book were shifters and not vampires.
As far as the characters go, they too had potential but needed a little more.... for example, we know Ana is not liked by SE's friends but we're never told anything other than she was a spy who apparently did something very bad to them?? What did she do? Why is there bad blood there? And how could everyone be so accepting of her right from the git go.
Like I said, this book could have been great but sadly it's already been done.
Wow! That was the first thing I could say when it came to reading this. I absolutely LOVED it. The way that Ana ignored her upbringing and what she should do to get SE, someone she'd known when she was younger, to safety. Little does she know that the eagle would be her mate. SE is in the grips of amnesia, but knows something isn't right...
Steamy scenes continue the storyline as SE and Ana explore their newfound mated status, and Ana has to come to terms with the fact that she's a traitor to Toltec...and that she made the wrong decisions when she was younger. Adriana is the motherly influence, with a fire to her that certainly grabs the attention of the reader...but it's the hint of evil coming that really brought to mind just how...scary this story will be in the future.

**this was given by the author for a honest review - R2R - **
This story got better, at first was slow to get into. The progression was nice, (I can be a impatient reader at times). So many emotions, mistrust, love, evil and the need to protect. Brings a team of New breed to fight against the bad. Ana a young warrior like non other and a mother that is evil personified. SE a larger than life warrior that fight evil and finds himself on opposite sides of his mate. Life is just to funny, the goddess or fate whichever you choose to call it, to put two people on different sides of the fence and mate them to each other. Ana found SE half dead took him home with her and helped him heal. SE cant remember where or he is or who he is. When the memory comes back how will he cope? Ana knows that she will be left alone again, her and her mate fight a war on different sides. Into the lions den Ana goes, she has to trust SE to keep her safe, and her own patience and understanding could win her the day ... maybe. I liked the story and the characters, after the inital slowness it turned out to be a book Id recommend. Glad I have the second one. Enjoy
Perhaps a knock-off, but a really engaging story...
Forbidden Call reminds me a lot of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series (a world-building glossary at the beginning, a goddess who selected/made the 8 new breeds to be warrior/protectors--each with a different talent/ability, an evil nemesis and minions)--so much so that I did not want to like it. The plot is so engaging, however, that I am now well and truly hooked on this series, so I have to recommend it.
...Action-packed PNR that I am recommending
Some editing is needed (typos, missing/repeated words), but it is not so bad that it detracts from the story--just makes it a 3.5 instead of a 4 star rating. If you like action-packed paranormal romance with super-hero-type characters, you should give the New Breeds series a try, beginning with Forbidden Call, which is free on Amazon at the time of this review.
Never even knew it was a spin off from the Jaguar Series, so on my way to get them just now ( I don't read much of YA, but need to learn more of this world and time)
You could pick this book up without reading the series as I did and get a great intake and concept of all that is happening,,got drawn in from the start and took me to put it down,, even at work I was whipping my kindle out of my bag for my measly 15min break,, lol
SE and Ana were a great couple,,full of passion, humor, and compassion it brings you to your knees, loved the chemistry all the new breeds have together,,was laughing quite alot!!! this is a Series I am really looking forward to following, I read quite a'lot of paranormal romance and I always ditch the one's I don't want to follow,,this one is on my fav's list!!!!!! Can't wait for the summer to see whose book is next!!!!!!!! just purchased Richard and Adriana's story roll on the next x
**I received this book in exchange for an honest review.**
This was AWESOME. Basically I started it this morning and before I could even add it to my currently reading list I finished it, yep that good.
Where to start. Hello SE and the rest of the New Breed brothers, sounds good to me. It was a little reminiscent of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series with shifters...but hey I loved that series and I LOVE this just as much.
I also thought that Ana was kickass (of course I'm a little bias to the name!) and LOVED that little twist at the end.
Bastian! **tear**
It was just adorable to watch Adriana and Richard...and then when everyone started to except Ana, sigh, I loved it.
Yep, highly recommended and I CAN'T WAIT to read more.
I haven't read the authors other series... But I will now! Forbidden Call was an exciting fast paced read and I can't wait for the second book. The idea of a shifter war in Boston sounded like fun. But it was so much more. The characters are interesting and the action is well balanced with some of the back story. What really hooked me on this story though was the love/romance aspect of it. Ana and SE's story line is written so well that you can almost feel their attraction to one another and it only gets more intense throughout the story. I may have cheered out loud at at least two points in the story.
Thanks so much to the author... I received this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal)
If you like the idea of good shifters versus bad shifters and have never read anything by J.R. Ward, then you will probably love this book. As for me, I thoroughly enjoyed it but couldn't help but be reminded of the Black Dagger Brotherhood in most scenes at the house and some when they were out too.
However, saying that, there are some concepts here that are not part of the BDB - the twinned souls, Victrixia, Toltec, perma-phasing. It makes for a fast-paced and interesting read. I will be reading the next book in the series to see where this is going.
Perfect for a coffee-break book and recommended to fans of paranormal romance.
I downloaded Forbidden Call as a free book from Amazon. The whole time I read this book, I kept thinking it was JR Ward fan-fiction, or some diluted version of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. The characters (even to the point of a gay warrior like Quinn/Blay, slang terminology, males/females rather than men and women, and world-building (Lessors by any other name, are still lessors) were woefully copied, but this writer doesn't have the same flair for plot and tension. It was a struggle to finish the book, as it was too similar to one of my favorite series.
Amazing read! There is a shapeshifter civil war in Boston, Massachusetts and it's up to the order keep peace. We meet Soaring Eagle who has gotten injured and Ava saves him. Soaring Eagle doesn't have any memory of what happen to him. Soaring Eagle is immediately drawn to Ava. Overall a great book and I highly recommend this book to paranormal lovers.
Sadly this book did not call to me. One, SE (stupid name) was a jerk for at least half of it. He didn't even warn his mate or seem to care when they were going to blow up the facility she works at and hello, she could be inside and was... It felt like a rushed messy version of Lara Adrian's series except with a shapeshifter war instead of a vampire one...
such a great book. got as a free read. a lot of similarities to some other books series. they are shutters. fighting evil. they have one true mate. goddess and evil are wrapped up in the story. but I stayed up all night to finish it. that tells u a lot.
This book was almost similar to Black Daggers Brotherhood in some ways, but a bit different. If I'm not mistaken I thought BDB was out of Boston as well with exactly the same having a butler who does things for the group. Overall I enjoyed reading SE and Ana who were a very interesting couple in the story. I thought the chemistry was written well with all the characters. This is the first book I've read by this author and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA
This was a good introduction book. I am definitely interested in knowing more about what happens next for this "family". I would recommend to those who enjoy this genre.
Honestly, I can't decide how I feel about this book. I even waited a day or two to write the review. This is the first book in Martha Bourke's New Breed Series. So yes this book has some ideas borrowed from other paranormal series. The shifter's are at war with each other. There is a group of shifters that think they should dominate the world and another group of shifters that are given powers by a goddess to fight those shifters, they are called the New Breed. The New Breed all live in a mansion together and are "Called" to be warriors fighting the shifters. There are also apparently shifters that aren't apart of either group. This was the main problem I had with the book. It's the first in the series but it's like the author just expected you to know things. More world building was needed. Where are the humans in relation to everything? Why do shifters get rejected by their parents? What started the war? How long has it been going on and how does it affect the rest of the world?
SE is the main new breed character in this book and he has been missing for 8 years. Ana finds him hurt and unconscious and takes him back to her place to help him since she knows him from her past (a past we aren't really let in on). She knows that they are enemies and yet she can't leave him in danger. They are of course fated mates and end up having sex right away. I'm not a fan of the fated mates instant bonding. Ana has a complex past that we are given bits and pieces of throughout the book but I wanted more. I wanted to understand where she came from, why she was a spy and how that part of her life affected her. How well did she know SE? I just wanted more information.
I also didn't really like the whole goddess ceremony thing and would have much rather just had the book been about two groups of shifters in a civil war. However with all that said I did enjoy parts of the book. There was something interesting and likeable about the book and maybe just enough to check out the next one especially at $.99.
Forbidden Call tells the story of a parallel world in which good and evil are pitted against each other in an epic struggle for control. This team of New Breed warriors, including SE, has been assembled by the goddess Akina to defend the world against the attack of Toltec, an evil and powerful force to be reckoned with.
The conflict of two people falling in love across enemy lines is a good old classic, and it works beautifully in Forbidden Call. Main heartthrob SE is satisfyingly tortured with his amnesia, then his realization of who he is and who he lost years ago. It's an amazing story, worthy of a hero. Ana no less so, the girl who was monstrously exploited by her own mother from birth on, who was thrown out of the New Breed camp after being caught spying for Toltec, and now returning to spy on Toltec for the forces of good. I love this structural symmetry. It has gravitas.
The characters in Forbidden Call seem comfortingly like ordinary human beings, with their snarky banter back and forth, their friendly rivalries, and their fears and phobias. But each one has the super powers befitting a member of the elite New Breed of warriors. Pax can transform himself to resemble any other person in perfect detail, for example.
The erotic realism as Ana and SE discover each other’s bodies is juxtaposed with lightning quick paranormal action, as the characters vanish from one place and re-materialize effortlessly in another. Their wounds heal faster, they kill their enemies with deft movements, and yet they get really hungry at mealtime, and scarf down their food with serious focus.
From the product description I am aware that Forbidden Call is the first book in a series. I love this world where good meets evil against a backdrop of Mayan history, and I’m looking forward to further installments.
I received an ARC of Forbidden Call in exchange for an honest review – it’s the only kind of review I write.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal) I do not get the chance to read much paranormal romance and I rarely have read books about shifters that didn’t involve the rest of the supernatural world. Both of these are reasons I was so excited to begin this series by Bourke. And I was not disappointed. I think that Bourke has created a fascinating world with the New Breeds and their enemies the Toltec. I love the connection between Ana and Soaring Eagle (SE). It is really interesting to see their relationship develop and how their connection shapes their respective destines. I sometimes found myself wishing that we saw more of the shifters as a whole - I think that might have better shown the difference between the regular shifters and the New Breeds. In fact there were many times when we completely lost the whole shifter aspect of the book to the point where I often felt that this was more a book about superhuman beings rather than superhuman shifters if that makes any sense. I like that the author gives a glossary of terms for this world that we are in, but I feel that maybe we have that glossary because some of the concepts are not completely flushed out. And everything doesn’t have to come out right away since this is just the first book in the series. it’s a little weird but I think that a little annoyed by the constant references to “my male”/”my female” but I think that I noticed that less throughout the book - it just seemed a little forced. All in all though I cannot wait to read more of this series and I am so happy that I go to read this!
I was given this book for an honest review by the author.
As a fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood and the Lords of the Underworld series, I thought I'd love this book. Sadly, I didn't. Off the bat, I thought SE and Ana "mated" way too quickly. I mean it was in the blink of an eye. No chemistry, no real love story, just boom I feel a connection then sex. It was just way too fast for me as a reader. I mean I've enjoyed one night stand books, but this was just not built up properly.
Going from there, I hated SE's character. He instantly gets his memory back and is disgusted by his actions with Ana because she's "a child". We also learn that he had a mate and child(who he left behind) after his mate dies in an accident. That royally pissed me off because that little boy needed his father more than anything. So, not only does he lose one parent, he loses both. I also tried to get with the words thrown at me from the "glossary", but sadly it failed to stick. Oh yeah, and I hated the whole "female" and "male" terms. It was so possessive and flat at the same time.
Besides that, I get that this is the 1st in the series, but there was just too much going on. I didn't really connect to any of the characters. There were too many that I needed to get acquainted to in such a little time. I was thrown into a world of stuff and I couldn't feel the whole "family" vibe that I was supposed to.
Sadly I give the story one and a half to two stars. Maybe I'll like the 2nd one better.
Forbidden Call by Martha Bourke ***I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)***
BIG THANK YOUS to Martha Bourke for allowing me to read and review her new breed series.
And Thank You LOP for introducing me to this extremely talented author.
If you love HOT shifter romance… then this is the book for you. Not only does it have hot/wild romance, but I also really enjoyed Martha’s creative shifter world. In the beginning of the book you will find a Glossary of Terms. I for one did not require the extra help in understanding the various terms and concepts like “hellions” and “k’ul,” but really appreciate how well thought out this story was. Martha’s writing is excellent and grabbed my attention from the very beginning. Seriously, I love romance books, but I would have read this book purely for the imaginative and creative shifter world (the love story was an extra bonus). I really enjoyed the main characters, Soaring Eagle (SE) and Ana. Their attraction was instant, but their love grew over time. What made their story interesting is that Martha gave them both heart wrenching pasts, which made their present lives even more difficult and engaging. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read and own them all! Definitely a re-read!
This was a decent read but I feel like it was lacking important details and was more like a draft than a fully fleshed out novel. I found myself wondering if I missed something in so many parts:
What did Ana do to Richard and his mate in the past? What is the backstory between Ana and SE? Why are new breeds just popping out of the woodwork (I think there was kinda an explanation about that but it wasn't very clear or detailed)? What's going on with the gods and goddesses? Where's the world building and mythology? This all takes place in a couple of vaguely described houses/warehouses. What's going on in this world? Why don't the shifters shift very often? It seems like they use their other gifts way more often and were less like shifters and more like X-Men. Why did Ana turn into a New Breed but not Adriana?
And the questions go on and on. First books in series don't always contain all the info a reader needs to make sense of upcoming events in future installments, but I was unclear on a lot of the basics in this novel that should have been covered for a better reading experience.
So, I did enjoy it, but with some reservations. I would like to say thank you to the writer for making this a free ebook. I will have to read some reviews of the next installments in the series to decide if I want to keep reading.
