Kristina

My accidental solo vacation takes a turn for the less depressing after a drink that leads to a date with a brawny bedroom-eyed firefighter. I’m 42, divorced, with two daughters at home. I thought romance was in my rearview mirror until the mysteriously intense Leo made me feel like I was the only woman in the Florida Keys.

I know better than to get attached. But between midnight kisses and dirty talk under starry skies, our connection feels so real. So right.

I can’t give up my entire life for a fling. Not even for a man that reminds me I’m not defined by a failed marriage and a carpool calendar. And especially not one who has no interest in a family of his own, let alone a package deal like me.

Leo

We were supposed to be temporary, just like everything else in my life. So why can’t I get Kristina out of my head? I’m the master of no strings, no attachments. But our time together haunts me after she leaves.

I’m not cut out to make a life with a woman. A woman with two kids? Forget it.

At least, that’s what I thought until fate brought us together again. It turns out the move I made to be closer to family brings me to Kristina’s hometown—and right in her path.

I can’t still explain the overpowering pull between us, but I’m sure of who she is.

Mine.

I’m not letting her go this time.

Kristina says: ‘A decent representation of a Kristina in fiction.’

It’s pretty odd to read a book where the main character has the same name as you. It’s never happened to me before with same name and same spelling (thanks mom). So for all the Kristinas out there lamenting that we don’t get personalized mugs or pens or keychains (there is always a Kristen and a Kirsten and a Christina) well here we go, finally one just for us!

This was a pretty sweet little story of a youngish couple (40 is not old and I refuse to write that) who meet on her vacation and have an instant connection. They both have a lot of baggage however, and it takes them a while to work through it, but the journey was heartwarming and engaging.
Kristina is a recently divorced mother of two girls and I related to her quite a bit, though I am not divorced, I do have two girls and am in her young and spry age group. She was a realistic character of how many women end up at 40 (not me, but others). The unfun mom who works hard and puts herself last. She finally lets herself enjoy life and have fun on a trip to Florida where she meets a hot firefighter moonlighting as a bartender at her resort. He is a bit of a nomad, not really a manwhore, but not into making anything permanent due to childhood trauma. But he also feels an instant and sincere connection to her.
The first part of the book, they had an intense *hot* fling but then couldn’t be together because of distance and priorities, but eventually Leo finds his way to her small town and they reconnect. I found their conflict to be very believable and the push and pull of them trying to see if their connection could hold beyond vacation was honest.
The characters in this book were both very mature and thoughtful and even though at times they did fear rejection or happiness, it didn’t last very long and they both had good reasons for it.
However there was no other conflict in this book but that so it dragged and felt long after about the 75% mark. There was some work that Kristina had to do with her kids and ex to resolve their dynamic but mostly the last part of the story was them debating how to reveal their feelings to each other. They both waited too long to admit their love causing all momentum in the plot to stall. When we keep reading many inner monologues like : ‘I told her child I loved her but hadn’t said it to her yet’ and ‘I knew he could read the love on my face but I just couldn’t make myself say it’ it gets frustrating and tiresome.
I remember having the same issue with the last book in this series, that they kept hitting the same notes about keeping a secret for way too long and then because of that it blew up in their faces. This book wasn’t quite so bad but I felt antsy near the end and just wanted it to be resolved already.
But overall this was cute. The dynamic between the mains, her kids, both of their family and friends were all organic and realistic. This was a comforting, sweet read and good if you don’t want anything too angsty. Her ex husband is a bit of a tool and her issues with him come up several times, either through his present actions or through past actions that trigger her memories. But that is resolved in a pretty mature way as well. All strings are tied up nicely and we get great cameos from her brother Jake and Peyton from the last book. It was an enjoyable read, but went on a bit too long.

This book is loosely based on the life of my bestie Kristina so it was a very interesting read.

There’s a hot firefighter/nurse/bartender who has silly zodiac signs tattoos but we won’t dwell on that , there’s lots of spice and absolutely no conflict between the MCs, yaay!

- single mom
- insta love
- spicy
- HOT characters in their forties
- no third-act breakup

I’m in my lazy reviewer phase, so that’s all, folks!

There’s something so satisfying about reading a Stephanie Rose story. Starting Back is a feel good comfort read. Kristina and Leo are two adults in their forties which I really enjoy. Friends to lovers romance that gave me relatable characters and topics, amazing chemistry and steam and of course a likable cast.

Kristina finally decided to let loose and enjoy herself thanks to a sweet Leo who definitely knows how to woo a lady. Her vacation was the beginning of something new and special even though it was only temporary. Her time spent with Leo affected her and for him as well.
Their relationship was honest and genuine. Her two daughters was important and it was great to see them welcome Leo and also slowly warming up to him.
The side characters from An Unexpected Turn were all there and it was good to be back with them again.

Starting Back is a romance with a capital R with low angst and a HEA that is so good.

Starting Back features Kristina, a divorced 42-year-old New Yorker with two daughters, and Leo Reyes, a firefighter and registered nurse. They meet by chance–which is my favorite meet cute–when she goes on a vacation for one in the Florida Keys.

Leo is moonlighting as a bartender at the very resort where she is staying and their connection is so natural and explosive that she has to pitch herself to see if he is real.

I have read all of this author’s books and they are often gut wrenching because they are so relatable. We all know someone who is divorced, and I could personally see myself in Kristina in so many ways. She put her children first and accepted the mistreatment (not physical) of her ex-husband, and tried desperately to save her marriage. This resulted in her not having the best self-esteem, and even touches on the emotional toll it takes on the children of divorced parents. Her life was filled with stressors and self-doubt, but after a few days with Leo, she began to see herself in a different light.

Stephanie Rose writes the swooniest of swoony heroes. We all need a Leo in our life! The way he looks at her and the genuine and sweet things he not only says, but proves with his actions, makes him a hero in my book. I loved his nicknames for Kristina and her daughters and how he embraced his Dominican heritage and respected his aunt and uncle. Even his career choices are honorable and noble.

He suffered a great loss when he was younger, yet he wasn’t bitter or resentful. This couple was magical and you will route for them the entire time. They brought out the best in each other and were able to accept being loved and accepted for who they were. This book will pull at your heartstrings and keep you turning the pages.

Things weren’t all smooth sailing for these two after they first met as they lived in separate states and only knew each other for a few days before their weekend fling had to end. But when someone makes that much of an impact on you, that is when you know they are worth fighting for.

I loved the character growth of all the characters, including her oldest daughter Chloe and even her ex, and was happy that her brother, Jake, and his wife, Payton, appeared often in the book. And a shout out to the author for how she portrayed the youngest daughter, Emma; she was so adorable and made me laugh.

Starting Back delves into real-life issues that women face everyday and was so hopeful and positive. I loved this couple and how they communicated once they reconnected. Make sure to download the bonus epilogue that shows their HEA in the future.

Surprisingly good.

I’m a super toxic dark romance person normally but this was randomly suggested when I was scrolling KU and I was too lazy to keep scrolling. Normally when this happens I end up with some cringe terrible shit but this was actually really good.

My only issue is again I’m a toxic nightmare so I enjoy that in books. But this was a happy small town love story and they were both grown adults not acting like toxic nightmares. Which was obviously the goal of the author and she achieved that so can I really complain.

Anyway if you want to take a break from dark romance for something wholesome this is a good read for that.

After reading An Unexpected Turn, I fell in love with Kelly Lakes. When I found out that Jake's sister, Kristina, was getting her story, I was so excited! And Starting Back did not disappoint!

After her divorce, Kristina goes to the Florida Keys to find who she is without the attachment of "wife". There, she meets Leo, a bartender/fireman, and the two of them hit it off, spending her whole vacation together. But Leo is a man who has difficulty committing to anything long-term, and when Kristina returns to Kelly Lakes, that's the end. Until they happen to run into each other a few months later. This time, they're determined to start back.

Oh, I loved these two together! They complemented each other perfectly, and I loved how Leo was with Kristina's kids (and Emma was just the cutest!).

I'm hopeful that we'll get more in Kelly Lakes in the future!

One trip to get away for a bit might of given Kristina Webber more than just a fun fling. She may have many responsibilities being a single mom but the sexy bartender/firefighter named Leo Reyes she met is ready to give her so much more! He never gets involved with tourists but there is just something about Kristina he can’t forget. Will these two strangers find a way to take a chance and just be happy together? What a sweet, feel good strangers to lovers romance. I liked how the H/h were both in their forties and already had their own lives before meeting. A nice spin on the single parent, small town romance. Told in dual POV

FIVE HUGE STARS ⭐️

Kristina and Leo have just surprised Joe and Cat as my favorite Stephanie Rose couple. This love story is going to stay with me for a long time ❤️

One trip can change your life. That is exactly what happened for Kristina and Leo. Kristina is a 42 year old mother of two, who has semi-recently divorced from her husband after being separated for years. She is supposed to go on a girls trip with her best friend to the Florida Keys, but when her best friend unexpectedly gets sick and isn't able to travel, Kristina is left to go on a solo adventure. She goes into it thinking that she is going to stay in her room the whole time, but on the first day, she leaves to go to the pool and meets Leo. And things instantly change.

The instant chemistry between Kristina and Leo was FLYING on the pages. You felt their connection through the pages and I was devouring the few days that they had together. Knowing that they only have a few days, they definitely make the most of them. At the end of the trip, Kristina goes home and knows that nothing will come out of it. She is a single mother and Leo is flaky and a nomad at best. He never likes to stay in the same spot.

Things change for Leo when a family matter brings him home. In the months since Kristina left Florida, he has felt empty and knew that he needed to make a change in his life. So he uproots life and gets a new job taking care of family members. You know what else that brings? Him WAY closer to Kristina. Will they be able to rekindle what they had back in Florida, or was that just a vacation fling and nothing more?

Gosh, I can't explain how much I loved this couple and this story. I am not usually a huge fan of insta-love because it's too cheesy for me, but the way Stephanie Rose wrote these characters really drew me in and had me hooked. There was no cheese, just heat, and lots of it. I loved seeing Jake and Peyton from An Unexpected Turn. Peyton and Kristina's friendship was amazing to see and how much it has blossomed since Peyton's story.

Overall, this has now taken the place for me as Stephanie Rose's best book and I highly suggest anyone looking for a good romcom to just jump right in!

I was so glad to get more of Kristina. After reading about her in An Unexpected Turn I was hoping for her story.

Needing some much needed time for herself, Kristina begrudgingly agrees to go on a vacation with her friend, but instead it ends up being a solo vacation since her friend comes down with a cold. Being a single working mom of two daughters with responsibilities, there isn’t much time for Kristina herself. So going on this vacation is for her to relax and unwind, and who would’ve thought that meeting a stranger would change her life forever.

Leo isn’t the settling down type or planting roots somewhere since he’s constantly moving. He’s been through some things that have added to his nomad lifestyle. But when he meets Kristina and spends a few days with her it has him thinking of things he hadn’t wanted.

Kristina and Leo had instant chemistry. Even after just a few days spent together a real connection was formed. They both learned a lot from one another and seeing them together was amazing. Kristina and Leo were exactly what the other needed.

Starting Back was a small town romance about second chances and finding love. I loved that both Kristina and Leo were in their forties and there wasn’t any unnecessary drama. Overall this was a very enjoyable read.

Stephanie has done it again delivering a heartfelt masterpiece. Reading her brothers story (an unexpected turn)my heart felt for Kristina. I wanted her to find a love take truly deserved.

Enter Leo….

Thank god for the flu 😂 which caused Kristina’s trip to florida to be a solo one. Had it not, I think it would’ve turned out to be a different vacation.

One thing I love about the books this author writes, besides the swoony men, is the ability to bring forward real issues that readers can relate to- the struggles of finding yourself after divorce or finding who YOU are besides a mom and wife.

Leo and Kristina were exactly what each other needed, it just took them both some time to realize it. I loved getting to see more Jake and Payton & Emma hands down stole the show!

Kristina is a divorced mother of 2 who takes a solo vacation and meets firefighter/bartender Leo. The attraction is instant but time is limited. Eventually circumstances change but they find that their feelings have not.
This book was a quick and easy read that grabbed my attention pretty quickly and I couldn't wait to find out when and how they would end up back in each other's life.

This was a sweet and steamy vacation romance! It was my first book by this author and I’d definitely check out more of her work after this. I really want to go back and read Jake and Peyton’s story because I really liked their characters in this!

I really enjoyed Kristina and Leo together. Their story is quite insta love and while I’m not a big fan of that trope, I didn’t feel like it was written in a really rushed/cringey way in this book, and I did feel a genuine connection between them! Leo really helped Kristina to be her true self and gain confidence in herself. The relationship he built with Kristina’s daughters was sweet too, especially Emma. She was adorable!

While this isn’t an angsty romance, Leo and Kristina definitely have some obstacles they need to overcome during their story and I enjoyed that it wasn’t a completely smooth ride to their HEA.

Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, this standalone ends with a HEA.
I first saw Kristina when I read “An Unexpected Turn.” In that book she is Jake’s sister who is in a marriage that is not working. When this book begins, Kristina is recently divorced and admits that her marriage was over long before it became legally official. She takes a vacation to the Florida Keys. It was supposed to be a kid-less trip with her best friend, but when her friend gets the flu, she ends up vacationing alone. At least, until she ends up talking to the hunky bartender.
Leo hasn’t grown roots in any one place. He can’t explain the intense draw he feels toward the beautiful woman at the bar. He just knows he needs to know her. I love the way they communicate from the beginning. They own their embarrassing flubs and enjoy each other’s company. Their chemistry is hot and seriously combustible as they spend Kristina’s short vacation together. I love that Leo teaches Kristina that she deserves so much more than what she had settled for in her marriage. I love the way he cherishes her and takes care of her.
When Leo ends up in Kristina’s small town, he knows he needs to pursue what felt like a whole lot more than a fling. Convincing her to take a chance on him takes only a little work. I absolutely loved Kristina’s daughters; especially the little one. She bonds with Leo in the sweetest, most perfect way. I love how she sees more than they think she does and doesn’t hesitate to call them out on it. Her observations made me laugh more than once. I also love the relationship and trust that Leo builds with Chloe, Kristina’s teenage daughter. I appreciated his patience and his commitment to Kristina and her girls. There were some sweet and some funny moments along the way.
This was a steamy read with lots of moments that I loved. Funny, sweet, romantic, and realistic: I love how they handle their relationship in a mature manner with very little angst. This is one to read again and again. I loved it.
I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.

3.5 Sweetness Stars

This was just a sweet read. Don’t get me wrong it did have some spice but there was zero angst and that was a little boring for me. There was no problems or worries which is why it got 3.5 stars for me.

The MC are so precious and I did have this sad feeling for Kristina as she truly had dealt with verbal abuse from her ex and her daughter had been witness to that which hurt my heart but that was it. No other worries. Her and Leo fell in love at first sight and when they weren’t together they still were.

It was just a sweet book. I liked it a lot but I realized while reading that I’m definitely an angst reader!

Oh my gosh! This was so sooo good!

I’m in awe of this Author and the way she wrote these characters and their story. It’s legit everything I hoped for and then some.

Kristina is recently divorced. She’s a single mom who’s life revolves around her kids and work never taking a moment for herself to just relax. When a planned trip ends with her going alone she spends the day at the beach until a handsome stranger strikes up a conversation with her at the bar.

Leo is a free bird, he moves around never staying in once place for too long. He doesn’t do relationships and doesn’t tie himself down. He’s free and he’s loving it. When his eyes land on the woman on the beach constantly frowning his attention is piqued. He has no idea how much his life is about to be flipped upside down.

Kristina and Leo’s relationship was literally everything to me. From the get go through to the end I was hoping for these guys so so badly, I just knew they would be perfect for each other! Their chemistry was insane!

Also, I have to point out how cute and adorable Emma is, Kristina’s youngest. I couldn’t help but smile every time something came out of her mouth, she was so much fun and Chloe, oh my heart hurt for that poor girl.

It’s been so amazing seeing the growth from these characters and I’m just in awe of how much I loved them all.

Even the secondary character had me loving them except maybe Colin lol.

Stephanie Rose did amazing with this single mom romance. It’s cute with some sad bits here and there.

5 Star Review of Starting Back by Stephanie Rose
Stephanie Rose is a relatively new author to me but what I have read, I have enjoyed. When I read the blurb for Starting Back, I knew I had to read it. It was everything I was expecting and more. From the first chapter I was hooked on the story that Ms.Rose wove.
When Kristina is forced to go on a planned vacation alone, she has no idea how that decision will change her life. Meeting fireman and part time bar tender Leo was an unexpected bonus she never expected.
Leo never has a relationship, refusing to let people in but when he meets Kristina his philosophy on life begins to change. I fell hard and fast for Cleo, such a swoon worthy and wonderful man.
I loved the journey that they embarked on, both being brave enough to take a chance of a relationship that would only last a few days. Even knowing they have an expiry date, they cannot help but dive in.
Add in an adorable little girl named Emma who has absolutely no filter and I was hooked. This book is a little gem and one I absolutely adored. One click on release, you won’t be disappointed. This book ticked all my boxes and was a wonderfully romantic love story.

Stephanie Rose outdid herself on this heartwarming and emotional romance about a divorced, single mom who meets a bartender/firefighter, who tends to be a nomad, while vacationing by herself in Key West. This vacation romance quickly turns into a small-town romance with an HEA.
Leo and Kristina have insta-chemistry that is OFF THE CHARTS from beginning to end (especially when Kristina claimed Leo in front of the whole town)! It was the perfect blend of everything from the flirty/steamy to the everyday life of a single mom. I fell in love with the characters right from the start! It was one of those books that you will not want to put down!
These two were truly soulmates and destined to meet! It was fate that Nicole was unable to go on vacation! I loved how Leo helped Kristina with her self-esteem and confidence in and out of the bedroom and that Leo found his home was not a destination, but a person (spoiler….it’s Kristina). Also, add in an adorable little girl and a protective teenager, and this book was PERFECTION! It was totally wonderful and a must read! FIVE STARS!!!!

(This is book 2 in the Kelly Lakes series and although the side characters are in this book, I felt that it could be read as a standalone BUT why skip all the goodness of An Unexpected Turn? Seriously, do yourself a favor and read it too)

Vacation romance turns forever romance! Single mom of two, Kristina’s solo vacation turns into anything but, as she meets Leo the nomad bachelor. Their lifestyles might not match, but their chemistry is intense. Kristina’s ex accused her of being frigid, but she is heating up the Keys with Leo!

Leo is such a cinnamon roll hero. He is totally there for Kris and works hard to undo some of the conditioning from her ex. When someone makes such a lasting impression after only a few days, you know it’s a relationship worth sacrificing for.

“Back to reality life” is sad for them both! I loved how Kris cracked Leo’s protective shell and he was more open to being near his family. And even though Kris is wary of Leo’s intentions, there was nothing cuter than Leo and her youngest, Emma.

I really liked how Rose showed the mental health aspects of divorce and handled that thoughtfully. Chloe was such a great older sister, but needed to still be a kid too!

Great single mom, vacation & small town romance!

Kristina is younger sister to Jake from a previous story. (I LOVE Jake!!!) Just putting that out there so you’ll know I already knew Kristina.
Kinda.
Barely.
She has a nice supporting character who I hoped would have her own book.
I’m also here to tell you we get some Jake and Peyton in this one. :) Oh ya!!!

Kristina and Leo meet in Florida where they have a fling. Not sure if that’s the right word…
She never expects to see him again even though they shared a once in a lifetime connection. Imagine her surprise when she sees him at the hospital she works at - with an overlapping shift! Eek!!!
Will she give Leo a second chance? You betcha!!!
This one does have a happily ever after!

your going to live this one. I know I did.

she's coming out of a bad divorce and well being forced to take a girls vacay. but it turns into her alone. Kristina hasn't done anything like this before a solo holiday down in the keys. but one hot bartender and her world turns up side down. Leo is working the bar on his day off from the fire station and notices her first from afar but then she comes to the bar and from there things take off.

now you think it all ends there but nope there's more but you need to read this one and see if they make it work or if they flop... I won't tell you but know your in for a ride.

I love Stephanie s qork and I can't wait to see what next from her

Stephanie Rose did a fabulous job with this low angst, high on emotions, heartwarming HEA that was impossible to put down. A delightfully sweet and yet super sexy vacation romance that turns into a small-town forever after. Leo and Kristina’s chemistry was off the charts from beginning to end. I love the way Leo pushed Kristina to be her authentic self, and how she pushed him to finally let go of his loss in order to have all the love he deserved. With a side dish of adorable kid goodness, this story has everything I love in the small-town, single-mom tropes. You won’t want to miss it.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Starting Back by Stephanie Rose is a sweet romance.

It's about a divorced woman, Kristina, who went on vacation and fell in love with a man who had no roots in his life. After meeting her Leo knew his life was gonna change. Although their romance hadn't had so much drama the road to being a happy family together wasn't quick.

This is such a good book. At first, it was light, flirty, and steamy. Then it became more realistic with all the everyday problems a single mom had. The end was pure perfection, I even cried a little bit. The main characters had great chemistry throughout the whole story. Both of them were incredible and quite relatable. But the star of the show was Emma, such a bright and entertaining
character. My favorite moments were when Kristina blushed and lost her words.

I fell in love with this story from the beginning and I will rate it with 5 stars.

I absolutely adored Kristina and Leo and their irresistible love story that held me captive from page one with it's heartfelt emotion, fun banter, and hot and steamy passion. After a difficult divorce, Kristina is on a solo vacation in the Florida Keys, after her girlfriend caught the flu. Now she is trying not to panic, being alone with time to herself, and not focusing on taking care of her two daughters. When she meets a sexy tattooed bartender, and she stops stumbling over her words, she begins to relax and have fun. Leo is taken instantly with the sexy woman who was confident and unsure of herself all at the same time. She made him break all his rules when he wanted to spend more time with her, asking her out after his shift. They connected right away, feeling at ease with each other, and the sparks grew into fiery passion. Leo was only filling in as a bartender, not liking being alone after his shifts as a firefighter and a nurse. He didn't like connections or staying in one place for very long. But Kristina made him feel things he never felt before. After their passionate three days together, Kristina was heading home to her family and life. She wanted more with Leo, but would take home wonderful memories of a sexy man who liked her for who she was, not wanting to change her. When Leo finally realized he wanted more from the woman who got away, he transferred to New York, hoping to find her again. Kristina is shocked to see Leo, and is afraid he won't like the 'real life' Kristina over the 'vacation' Kristina, so she keeps him at a distance. Kristina is 'home' to Leo, and his restlessness is gone. Now he just has to convince Kristina, and her two girls, that he is there to stay and they are all worth fighting for. I really fell so hard for Leo and Kristina. They were so good for each other, helping each other open their hearts to grow, and heal, and see that they are worthy of love. I loved watching Kristina blossom from timid to a confident lover who took what she wanted. Leo was so swoony with his suave and possessive ways, and his sweet interactions with Kristina's daughters really made my heart skip a beat. I loved the beautiful family they were building together. I loved returning to Kelly Lakes, and catching up with Peyton and Jake and more of their family and friends who made this story even more fun and endearing. This is a wonderfully witty, tender, and steamy story that you can't help but devour as it captures your heart.

Loved this. A really sweet but sexy love story - that’s the best way to describe it. Rose takes your typical romance and flips it around - the sexy stuff comes first, there’s sort of a break up in between (when their short affair comes to an end) and the second half is about them reconnecting.

The first part of the book focuses on Kristina’s 4 days-much-needed-solo-vacation in the Florida Keys following her divorce, where she meets sexy Fireman and RN, Leo (of Dominican heritage). They have a short and sweet affair and then she has to return home to upstate New York and reality. But this is not just Instalust… they both can’t stop thinking of the other but are too stupid to do something about it (I thought we got smarter in our 40s?)

The books then jumps forward a couple of months and they reconnect by chance. It’s a little cheesy but so so sweet and plenty of steam too but in a way that works and is not overkill, as it tends to be in much of the Open Door genre of romance. I bought the story (aside from him becoming a fireman int he small town - aren't’ those always volunteers only?)

Really enjoyed it - especially given it’s about two people in their 40s - there are just not enough love stories about that! Little Emma, (Kristina’s 6 year old) brings a lot of comic relief, esp since the book also deals with heavy topics of parental loss and also caring for elders.

It seems this is the second book in an interconnected romance so I’ll have to go read Peyton and Jake’s story next (even though that came first. Sounds shady - she’s his best friend’s niece!)

Oh, one thing that I think is hilarious is this cover features the same models as the alt cover for Mustang Valley by Sienna Judd, except they forgot the tattoos, which is ironic, since that’s a big part of who Leo is.

Mustang Valley (Starlight Canyon #2) by Sienna Judd

If you liked this book (b/c it focuses on relationships where at least one person already has kids and they’re in their 40s), you might like

This book is like a warm hug from your favorite person in the world. It’s THAT good. I knew Kristina was going to be a phenomenal leading lady when we met her in An Unexpected Turn. As Jake’s younger sister, we got a glimpse inside her not so happy marriage and I couldn’t wait to see what Stephanie Rose had in store for her! Little did I know, Stephanie was about to outdo herself….

The book opens with Kristina going on a solo post-divorce vacation to the Keys. Her best friend’s battle with the flu means Kristina is all by herself in paradise with nothing to do but worry about her children and all the other things moms have on their minds 24/7. Enter Leo. Ah, Leo. A firefighter who moonlights as a bartender to pass the time, she catches his eye and he can’t get her out of his head. The days they spend together are absolutely amazing to read, but it really gets interesting when a twist of fate brings them back together in Kelly Lakes.

Their story is not what I consider angsty (which is perfect for me), but that doesn’t mean it isn’t meaty. The issues that they have to work through are real world and very relatable, so it isn’t always a walk in the park for these two. It’s so nice to read a book about people who are in their 30’s or 40’s and this book really delivers.

I feel like each of Stephanie Rose’s books get better than the last, and that’s really saying something…because I ADORED Jake and Peyton. There’s just something about the characters, the town (which almost becomes a character of its own) and their love story that sucks you in from the first page and makes you bitter that you have to work, cook, do laundry, etc. Trust me when I say, you NEED this book. You don’t have to have read An Unexpected Turn to read Starting Back, but come on – you really should. You won’t regret it and soon you’ll be like me – on pins and needles waiting for more Kelly Lakes!!
