Reluctant witch Halloween LaVeau never guessed that inheriting LaVeau Manor would be so difficult. Sure, she was named Worst Witch of the Year, but her botched spell-casting is all behind her now, right? Everything changed after discovering the ancient Book of Mystics. She’s now the leader of the Underworld… whatever that means. Apparently, she’s in charge of keeping order within the paranormal world.
If that wasn’t enough, Halloween—or Hallie as she prefers to be called—has two gorgeous men making her life even more confusing. The sexy vampire Nicolas Marcos has been accused of stealing another witch’s powers. With the help of Nicolas’ brother, the good-looking warlock Liam Rankin, Hallie must discover if Nicolas is guilty as charged. How will she navigate this Underworld?

3.5 stars the series did improve. book did have more mysterious aspects compared to the previous one. it wasn't slow as the first one. but the mc was so confused in this one. so was the summoning of ghosts. everything was explained towards the end. but still it would have been better if mc atleast had a clue what she was doing. is it me or this mc is portrayed more silly & confused than any other character i have ever seen.
I generally enjoy books in this genre. However, Halloween LaVeau is a weak main character: rushing here and there with little to no preparation and not doing her necessary homework. For the leader of the Underworld, this is ridiculous. On the plus side, some of the supporting characters are interesting and could help Halloween develop some depth if they would just stop blindly rushing around with her.
For the new Underworld leader, Halloween LaVeau, who's magic was never quite up to the mark, It just seems like one disaster after another, the same as usual. Only in her case the disasters never seem to stop coming no matter what she does, or doesn't do. Trying to choose between two vampire witch brothers who are both devastatingly handsome is bad enough, but then one is falsely accused of turning another witch to a vampire and stealing her power by the New Orleans Coven leader. add in two suspiciously inconvenant reanimated ghosts, whose stories don't add up. and a missing Vampire Leader who went missing at about the same time. Nothing has ever been simply for this Louisiana Miss when it comes to magic, and it doesn't look like her new found power or lofty position is going to make her life any easier.
Charmed Again Nicholas, Liam, and Halloween are heading for New Orleans. Sabrina Stafford was being attacked and asked Nicolas to turn her into a vampire. When Halloween asks why he didn’t stick around, he says she didn’t give him a chance. She took off. Nicolas found a demon beast hovering over the woman. They want power and return souls to the devil. She was dyingand he was her only chance. Halloween will hear the charges against him and decide his punishment she’s told. Three men and Three women greet that when they arrive at the house. (The Head of the New Orleans Coven).
Jacobson Stratford (the brother of the victim) I ntroduces himself. We learn that the woman is claiming Nicholas turned her against her will in order to steal her powers. (She’s a witch). Jacobson makes no secret he thinks Nichoas is guilty right away. The lady in question isn’t there and the Council doesn’t believe the story about the demon beast. Halloween calls the meeting to a close and says she needs to look more into the facts and finding some evidence. Jacobson wants her to take care of this on this night. Jacobson and Nicolas have words. Jacobson says he never should have let vampires into the coven and Nicolas tells him he didn’t have a choice. Jacobson punches Nicholas on the way out and it turns into an actual fight. Halloween comes over and punches Jacobson in the stomach to break it up. Liam pulls Nicholas off Jacobson. Sabrina then appears out of the shadows. Halloween wants to speak to her but Jacobson says she’s not ready. Not giving in to his bullying she tells him she’ll get back to him when she decides something.
When they get back Miles Shephard and Nina Watson stop by from the Underworld Comitee to welcome Halloween. She invites them in and wonders what kind of paranomals they are. They say they want to speak to her before she’s asked to look into any broken laws. Too litte. Too late. They want to know if she’ll consult the book about what happened and she says she will. Miles says they also feel she should have protection. It’ll be Liam. Nicholas doesn’t like this and says he can do it. He doesn’t trust Liam to look after Halloween because he was in charge of looking out for his mother and he REALLY doesn’t want him around Halloween. Nina tho dismisses the issue and he walks out the room.
After they leave, Liam is staring at something out the window. He promises Halloween he can protect her before wishing her good night. Then Halloween and Nicolas share a dance and he seems to be back to normal from the catatonic way he acted earlier. After filling Anabelle in about the nights events, Halloween finds Nicholas has disappeared. When she goes to look for him, she hears a noise coming from the attic. She checks the attic but finds him in the parlor with a blank expression and an odd smile. He’s wearing a gold necklace he hadn’t been brfore. She goes to get the book (from the kitchen) and when she comes back again, he’s gone. Then she sees a woman.
The ghost doesn’t stop when commanded. When she reaches the top stairs the ghost is gone and Nicolas is standing at his door. He says he hasn’t seen anyone. She warns him about the ghost but he says she might have just imagined it. In the parlor not much later, Halloween expresses her concerns to Liam and offers the suspicious that Jacobson put a spell on him. Liam says it’s possible. She finds out Liam is a vampire also after questioning the reason he’s lived just as long as Nicolas. He warns her to be careful about the ghost. The next morning, Halloween is awakened by thumps and finds the ghost in the white dress in the library. She says her name is Gina Rochester and she needs Halloween to reanimate her. It’s Nicholas’s mother. She says she’s come back to help Nicolas. Gina is fading. Halloween goes to get the book. By the time she comes back Gina is gone.
Halloween preforms a spell from The Book of Mystics to bring Gina back, but instead she brings back a lady named Catherine Butterfield. She says she’s there to help, She says she’s her great great great aunt. She says the house use to be hers. Haloween shows her to a room all the while vowing to get rid of her later with a spell. Later when Halloween goes to check out if there’s really a grave for Catherine out back, she blacks out. Anabelle finds her outside and after going to give Catherine some clothes she comes back to find Jacobson has snuck in and grabbed Anabelle by the throat. He and Liam fight. After Halloween threatens to have him removed from the Council he leaves. (He was there for Nicolas). After this, Nicolas offers to leave. Halloween says there’s no need. But he says he comes back he will.
Anabelle tells Halloween she has a good feeling about Catherine and to let her stay after she voices her suspicions. When Halloween goes upstairs, she finds a note from Nicolas that he has to right his wrongs. She shows Liam and they both suspect he’s gone to New Orleans. Anabelle and Catherine say they’ll come with. On the way out a woman named Jenny Love calls and tells Halloween she has information for her and asks her to meet. So, they go to the bar The French Quarter (a vampire bar). Jenny appears to be nervous. She says Nicolas was there last night. She says he turned someone else that morning. He bit one of the waitresses. Halloween wants to go see her. We find out her name is Marissa Hadley. Halloween asks her what happened and she basically says the same thing. She was attacked unprovoked. She wants to know if he’ll be taken care of and Halloween tells her she will.
Halloween realizes that someone must have done a glamor spell and impersonated Nicolas. Ginny tells them that after he left, the man and woman at the table said they had to get rid of him and her (Halloween). Halloween realizes Nicolas would never meet with Jacobson and Sabrina. She says she thinks they were witches. On the way out, another waitress tells them the woman’s name is Janet Brock and she’s a witch and she lives across town, by herself, in an old house. She offered to sell her some witch blood but then backed out. She gave off a bad vibe.
The house is abandoned but they find Nicolas’s wallet. When they go back to the bar, Ginny says no one there fits that description. She recognizes the house as where some witches she heard about praticed black magic. So, the lady they spoke with had to have also done a glamour. When they check out the planation, (the house at the beginning of the book), they find two glasses with lipstick on the rims and more of the markings that were at the abandoned house. Halloween speaks to Nicolas briefly who says he’s in New Orleans. She warns him not to do anything rash with Jacobson before the call cuts off. Then she finds a rose on the counter. Halloween does a spell to vanquish Catherine but ends up calling yet another paranormal. This ones name is Claude and Halloween shows him to a room.
Misty, Halloween’s mother, she and Liam head to The Bubbling Cauldron to find out why Misty saw Jacobson there with a woman. When they arrive, they notice the “waitress” who sent them to the house, but she gets lost in the crowd. They finally see Jacobson and he’s vague about the markings. Saying only, it’s a kind of witchcraft they practice. Sabrina is there and she and he do something to the air that makes Halloween lose her breath. They then see Nicolas who says he’s working *with* Sabrina and Jacobson now. Halloween runs to try to get to Nicolas before he leaves but when she grabs his arm she touches .. nothing. The leader of the Baton Rouge clan Gilford Harris shows up at the manor He’s there because there are rouge vampires and he needs help finding the leader of the New Orleans clan. Claud and Catherine return larer. She says she just stepped out. They both look guity of something.
(When Gilford was there, he spoke of a demon being unleashed). Halloween tries another spell for clarity. After she does, she fills her entergy drained. She gets an idea to talk to a medium so they can contanct Nichola’s mother. Tomorrow she’ll go to New Orleans. One minute she’s in the kitchen nodding off but when she wakes up she’s outside again and Anabelle and John (the other bodyguard that was sent) are looking over her. Hallie visits an old friend (Sierra) that suggests a séance. Before the Séance, they visit the Plantation again. Halloween blacks out again and John says he’s seen this before. Witches are trying to drain her energy. Before they leave, Halloween takes some pictures of the markings to see if she can match them up with anything in the book. Then she sees a gold necklace on the floor with the same markings.
They go back to the abandoned house and try a spell to see if they can see events of the past but it doesn’t work. So Halloween also takes pictures of the markings. Nicola’s mother says he’s in danger and he’s with people that are blocking Halloween’s spells. She tells her the answers are in the book. She gives her some advice. She has to have faith in the spells she cast. She says she needs to find the pendant. It’s in the house. (Gina is speaking through Anabelle. Then the connection fades). Anabelle didn’t realize. In the car, there’s a single rose on the seat. Halloween says she’s made a decision to step down from being over the New Orlean’s Coven. Back at the Manor, after kissing Liam, Halloween blacks out again. When she wakes up she’s on the sofa and the rose is beside her on the table. She blacks out again. Catherine doesn’t seem to approve of Liam sticking around.
The next day Liam and Hallie agree that Catherine is acting strange so they search her room and find a gold pendant on the floor with the same markings as the necklace they found at the Plantation. Hallie preforms a locator spell and it leads them to the attic. Hallie finds a postcard with the same markings from Catherine. The date she sent the card doesn’t match up to the date she said she died. They also find a wooden stake. Anabelle finds the necklace but the symbols are a little different than the others. With the help of the necklace (and a spell) Hallie can now translate the book. Halloween calls an emergency meeting. Nicolas is there. She strips Jacobson of his position and has him escorted out. Nicolas won’t even look at her and walks out. Before they leave, some of the witches perform a spell meant to harm Hallie.
When Halloween sees Catherine and Claude, she confronts her about the necklaces and the postcard. Catherine takes both necklaces and a magical pull leaves Hallie locked out of the Manor. They decide to take the shortcut through the woods to find a phone, and see Nicholas, but he disappears into thin air. They pay the next door neighbor Estelle a visit and ask to use the phone. She gives them a box of Aunt Mattie’s things with contains another bound stake and a journal. The symbols are from a demonic cult they find out from the journal. Nicolas and his mother staked the vampires that turned them. They were from a demonic cult. Liam wasn’t there to help them. The cult was lead by a vampire and he vowed revenge if anything happened to them. So they’ve come back for Nicholas. Claude and Catherine are part of the cult. They need to find out what happened to the real Nicolas. Sabrina was turned by the same vampire that turned Nicolas.
Anabelle is missing when Halloween calls together all the witches. Its reveled that Catherine and Claude are really Sabrina and Jacobson. They wanted to find Ncholas and give his soul (and Halloweens) to the demon. Then one of them would take over the Underworld. Sabrina wants it to be her. Jacobson wants it to be him, Hallie freezes Sabrina and her brothers powers. It turns out Sabrina lied. She was turned YEARS ago. Hallie and the rest then head off to find Nicolas (who the demon has) and Anabelle. When they finally get inside the house (I take it the abandoned one) inside a room they find Anabelle, John, and Nicholas. Then another Nicholas. One of the Nicola’s is the lady that sent them to the house (instructed by Jacobson). She was the one who turned the waitress. After the demon is banished, Halloween asks Liam to be over the New Orleans Coven. A man shows up and says it wasn’t her place to give the position away because he was next in line.
Rating: 6 I liked this one better than the last one. It was more about the mystery of what was going on with Nicolas and less about Halloween lusting over Nicolas and Liam. It was kept to a minimum and therefore didn’t bother me as much. As far as the mystery everything was explained neatly at the end. Halloween didn’t strike me as the strongest leader but I think to be thrown into a position with no guide whatsoever and with the first issue being a his word against her word situation she did a not so bad job. I felt like she might not have started off that strong but in the end it took courage to fire Jacobson (keep forgetting his name). But I’m still waiting to see her get stronger with the spells and her magic. Hopefully now that she’s unlocked the book of Mystics she’ll improve. I feel like she has potential but we just haven’t seen it yet.

Rose Presseys' creativity shines again is this wonderful story of Halloween LaVaeu and her wild adventures. Halloween now leader of the Underworld after finding the book of mystics in Forever charmed is now assigned the task of decided Nicolas Marcos fate when he is accused of turning a witch against her will. Hallie, Nicolas and Liam set out to New Orleans to get to the bottom of the charges. They soon discover things are not what the seem and embark on a fact finding mission after Nicolas is mysteriously acting strange then vanishes. They talk with the NO Coven, met with a physic talk to other witch and are joined at the manor by two more supposed ghosts. This fun quirky adventure is wonderfully written, with a great story flow and characters that will steal your heart. Cannot wait for the third book in this series.
Okay, I wanted to read a couple more books to see if it was just the one, but, so far all 3 books in series have errors. They must not be proof read. In one sentence one person is driving the car and in the next, someone else is. In one part a character shares something about himself with the protagonist and chapters later, the protagonist suddenly has never heard this before and is irritated she wasn't told sooner. There are numerous errors like this. Not to mention the protagonist could never be close to a real person as no one is that stupid and doesn't learn from past mistakes. It gets a little cumbersome to have to repeatedly read the earth, wind, fire and water spells over and over...yes, we get it! With all that said, they are a quick, entertaining read and you do get a real picture of what the characters look like. If you can over look the poor editing and repetitious spells, I think you will enjoy the series.
This is an entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series. A fun cast of character and an entertaining storyline. Halloween Lavoe is a witch and she has inherited the mantle of being queen of the underworld. She didn’t necessarily want it but she’s got it and now she must rule over The paranormal world and all of its deeds. Another faction is trying to unseat her so Halloween and her friends must figure out what’s going on who’s doing it and see if they can stop them. An entertaining and fun adventure. Check it out
This author never disappoints. Once you've binge read one of her books, you are already looking forward to the next installment. This unlucky witch is now Leader of the Underground and everyone wants the job, she feels inadequate at. Either, by sheer fluke or genuine witchiness, you laugh at her mishaps, and cheer when she succeeds. Also the added confusion of fancying half brothers, one her bodyguard, witch, other a romantic witch/vampire.
This was just a great paranormal cozy mystery for the spooky season. It was so consuming and addictive. I read this in one sitting. It had been awhile since I read the first one, but I immediately picked it up and went into this world with Hallie, Liam, and Nicholas. So much happened in this one with plenty twists and turns as Hallie was trying to prove the innocence of Nicholas. It was full of adrenaline and suspense. It was very fast paced. It was just a good time.

Reposting my review for 1, as it applies to this book too: First off, there is no mystery in this book. It's all supernatural stuff. And the main female character is stupid, and keeps doing the same stupid things over and over. I even read book 2, and it doesn't get any better. I found that book 3 was available for free after I finished 1 and 2, but I was so tired of the characters and the repetitive ongoing storyline that I didn't bother with reading it.
Awesome! The worst witch and now the leader of the paranormal world. How could this happen to her? All she wanted to do was run a business but now she's been tasked with finding out if one of the men in her life is guilty of the crime that he has been charged with. Is she up to the task? Great lighthearted read.
The character is just too annoying - she thinks "maybe I should consult the book" and then just runs out and says she doesn't have the time? If you don't know what you are doing, looking at the instructions will actually save you time and in this instance probably save your life! Good thing this book was free - I'll give the next book a chance and then I'm done.
I loved it! Halloween or Hallie as she prefers to be called is quirky and a bit snarky and just fabulous! She soon finds out that being the Leader of the Underworld is not all its cracked up to be! With the help of her best friend and two hunky brothers she gets down to business and bless anyone who gets in the way! Great read!
I chose four stars since I am not into the demons. I did enjoy the story line about Halloween becoming the underworld leader. The developing story between half brothers Nicholas and Liam has also been interesting. It has me going back for lol three in the series.
Call me young at heart or whatever, but I love reading these kind of books. Just enough mystery to keep a person interested & wondering what will happen next & paranormal too. I love these books! 😊
I have enjoyed this series so far. I love romance and this is a little more mystery but has some light romance mixed in. Its a cute paranormal series that is fun to read. Once in done with one book I start right up with the next because I can't wait to see how Hallies life is going to pan out.
I am in love with the main character, Halloween! This series is quickly becoming my favorite. There's mystery, magic, sarcasm, romance, and paranormal beings. Reason it's not 5 stars is the typos. There isn't a lot, but it's noticeable.
Seems trouble follows Halloween everywhere she goes. But she did not expect things to turn thus crazy when she agreed to be the leader of the underworld
How Halloween a witch who can make a simple spell go wrong became leader of the Underworld she doesn't know but she is going to take it serious, what could possibly go wrong
This book was an interesting read. However it is not cohesive. Too many tings are stopped and are never recovered. Characters are good but need to be stronger.
I enjoyed this book more gah I did the first in the series but still not to my taste. The plot seemed repetitious and quite frankly boring but I persevered and finished it!
