“Well, Mr. Gabriel. What do you know about…demons?”
For most people, that’s a question that never comes up. Medium Seth Gabriel isn’t most people and for him, it’s another normal day in an abnormal life.
It’s bad enough that his love life has seen better days but his personal problems are only the half of it. Seth’s ghost hunting business, SG Cleaning Services hasn’t seen a client in weeks and he’s desperate for a paycheck. Things look up when two potential clients seek him out.
Courtney Reeves hires Seth to investigate a paranormal disturbance in her home. On the surface it’s a run of the mill cleaning job but when you deal with the dead for a living, there’s no such thing as routine. The close of the case is the start of even bigger problems and Seth will find that, while there’s nothing to fear from the dead, the living are another story.
When the nervous and persistent Evan Gallagher enters his life, Seth sees the promise of a big payday. There’s only one catch. The wealthy lawyer thinks his wife is possessed by a demon. Seth doesn’t believe in demons…not anymore, but the money is too good to turn down. Is Evan crazy or is he one hundred percent sane? As Seth digs deeper, he’ll ask the same question of himself.
For a guy who’s coasted through life on not much more than Greek takeout, tequila, and attitude, Seth’s going to have to dig deep to survive what will turn out to be a very bad week.
When an ill-fated joint writing venture went horribly awry, mild mannered engineer Matt Schiariti decided to strike out on his own. The result? Selling his short story 'Hollow' to Padwolf Publishing for inclusion in the recently published anthology, 'Apocalypse 13' in late 2012. Gaining confidence from seeing his first ever published story in print, he plowed on and dove into the self-publishing pool with the dark fiction/horror short story, 'Words With Fiends'.
Matt has always been a voracious reader and reviewer of books and, after 37 years, has decided to make the transition to writer. Better late than never. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, 1.75 children, crazy dog, and overly personable guinea pig. He's written two novels in 2012 which is he currently editing and continues to work on short stories. Look for more from the self-proclaimed "dude who writes" in 2013.
I was given an ARC of this book for review. I wasn't sure about reading it for a bit, because I'm not a big fan of the genre. But, after I read Words With Fiends I realized I really liked his writing and that was enough to get me to start reading.
There were times in the book where I had to put it down because I was laughing so hard. Seth is an absolute hoot! I liked him a lot. The characters were believable and relatable.
Seth Gabriel is a cleaner, of sorts. No, not your typical housemaid that stops by weekly to take out the trash and straightens up the house, not exactly. Instead, he cleans your home of unwanted house guests, particularly, ghosts. He is recently separated from his wife, Rene; money is real tight, and business is slow. Thankfully he receives a call from Courtney Reeves- she hears noises in the night at the home she inherited from her grandfather, and is a little creeped out to say the least. Heck, she didn’t even realize that ghosts can wander through your house during the day! But, something does seem a little off in that basement of hers, which will require an evening visit. Normally Seth doesn’t believe in mixing business with pleasure…. Demons don’t really exist, or do they? That is what Seth always believed, until he received what he thought was a prank call from someone just trying to get him going. He abruptly hangs up, after telling the caller to never dial his number again. But of course that is not the end of it. The said caller, Evan Gallagher, then shows up at his office, with quite the story to share. First Evan claims that his wife’s inoperable brain tumor was cured by using an Ouija board (like that isn’t creepy enough), and then he starts to describe the change in her demeanor. He doesn’t mind the change in her sexual appetite, but her split personality is another story. It’s almost like she is… possessed? Per Evan’s request, Seth makes an evening trip to the house, to meet Amanda Gallagher personally, to see if she gives off any type of vibes. All was going well, besides the fact that she is a complete hottie. He must be hallucinating again like in high school. He didn’t really see what he thought he saw, did he? Evan offered him $50,000 to rid his wife of the demon he is convinced that possesses her, and Seth really could use that money right now. But, is he up for that challenge? And let’s not forget to add Jamie to the mix. She’s just Seth’s frequent paid companion, his favorite one at that. Since he has met her, he hasn’t bothered with any other. Then one drunken evening he returns home from the bar and finds her in his bed, all beat up from some John that wants her to turn tricks for him. Seth isn’t the type to get too close, but she is so innocent, and no woman deserves to be treated like this. He doesn’t have the time for this right now, but how could he turn her away in her time of need? This is an absolutely wonderful book that made me laugh often, and a few instances that threatened tears. “Ghosts of Demons Past” is the first book from this author I have read, but I guarantee it will not be my last. And like the others, I am requesting a sequel!
Well now, this book was able to hold my attention so well I didn't want to put it down. And I didn't....finished it in one day. The characters, especially Seth were well throughout out and written, the storyline was well paced and all in all, it was enjoyable
I was lucky enough to beta read this book in March. I thought it was so good and funny. The dialogue was so funny. I liked Seth from the beginning. It was reminiscent of an episode of Supernatural. It is really funny and not in a trying too hard obnoxious way, but an honest to goodness laugh out loud funny. "I was just about ready to show him my maturity with a stream of curse words..." The pacing was good. The characters are great. When Seth's back story is revealed I felt really sorry for him. The beginning was good. It is funny and I like the lovable loser, Seth. I was really liking it but when the demon shows up, then it started getting really exciting!
Seth Gabriel is one of those characters you love to love, flawed but awesome anyway. There had better be a sequel to this or I will be downright depressed. I'm thinking series actually.
Ghosts of Demons past is a perfect combination of horror, humor and kick-butt action that propels you to the end almost involuntarily. I wanted to make it last but couldn't stop myself from reading until the very end.
Realistic characters, snappy dialogue and an awesome plot make this book a definite winner.
Loved the book. The character Seth is a p.i. a. & a foul mouth. But, he is hilarious & even when it's smarter to keep his mouth shut... he keeps on jabbing. ..With the what gift or curse he has u can respect his gumption. Books that make you laugh out loud and make ev1 around u look at u funny....are rare. Plus I might have a new catch phrase or two from Seth.
I rarely do reviews but have decided to try.. to atleast say I loved the book.. definitely a horror book.. and I know I couldn't put it down. Mr. Schiariti is amazing.
I think a sequel is definitely needed. I demand other supporters of this book to rally together and demand another Seth Gabriel book. What is not to love about this book? Demons, ghosts, paranormal, psychic medium, sex (and lots of it), hookers, tequila….and the same campy quality of Evil Dead. If this were ever to be adapted into movie form, I would pay double to see Bruce Campbell play Seth.
To know anything about Demons, you must first believe in demons. Seth is a drunk on Hornitos, down on his luck, psychic medium… those are three horrible ingredients to make up a person, fictional or nonfictional. He’s going through a divorce, trying to prove to his 12-year-old son that his business and life are worthwhile, convincing his soon-to-be ex that he is a good father, and then add the ghosts on top of it.
Seth saves his #1 go to hooker, Jamie from trouble she gets in to. His, “She’s a hooker, you’re a client. Don’t get attached” mantra totally fails, as they are both burned out cigarette butts in the gutter of humanity… But you can’t NOT love them. I actually kind of got weepy when Seth pulled Jamie aside and said, “I can tell you feel like you owe me for letting you stay here. Get that thought right out of your head. I don’t expect you to pony up your share of the rent with blow jobs and screwing, dig? After the shit you went through last night, you’re probably not up for it anyway. And that’s cool. Totally cool. I get it. That’s not why I let you stay. I let you stay because…because it was the right thing to do.” …. okay, as effed up as that is… can we give the author a shout out to the author… I don’t think it’s possible for Seth’s personal mantra to exist after this. . .
I love everything about this book, well almost. The only thing I really was unable to wrap my mind around were the high school flashbacks. Either devote enough of the book to go more thoroughly into it, or cut it from the production table. … OR…. add it into a sequel.
I ABSOLUTELY EFFIN love Homer’s A Real American Gyro. Homer is … is just that perfect neighbor/boss/friend that makes books worth reading. I even love his old, gnarly, landlady. Hell, even they need love too.
Overall Thoughts: READ THIS DELIGHTFUL, GRITTY, DIRTY, SEXUAL paranormal/psychic medium book. It’s funny, it’s campy, it has moved to the top of my 2013 favorites list.
If you have an Amazon Prime account, it’s free for download…right now!
Seth Gabriel is one messed up dude. He is divorced, a drunk, pays women for sex, hides from his landlord and is a shitty father. And, that's all in a day's work! But, things seem to be looking up after he meets Evan Gallagher and gives him a proposition that Seth cannot refuse. But, will it ultimately destroy Seth and push him over the edge?
I like books about ghosts, demons, witches, vampires, werewolves, fairies, etc. It makes me feel like a kid again to read about these characters, almost like I'm reading fairy tales when I was a kid. I really liked GoDP because Seth can see ghosts and talk to them but he doesn't believe in demons. Seriously!! Anyway, because Seth can communicate with the dead, it makes his life super complicated and ultimately ruins everything in his life. He has shitty relationship with his 12 year old son, he's getting a divorce, lives in a rundown trailer and drinks like a fish. He doesn't sustain any real relationships with people because he can't talk about what he does for a living for fear of what people will think. After meeting Evan Gallagher, a rich lawyer, he thinks that maybe he can turn his shitty life around and make something of himself. But what he doesn't realize is that he might just go nucking futs and never come back.
I cannot say enough about this book. I really and truly think that this is one of the best books of the year. I would really like to see this book soar to the top of the charts because I believe it is that good. There are so many aspects to this story that are heart-wrenching and have the reader hanging on every word. There are so many scenes where you can feel the character's pain, passion and loss. I really connected with these characters and found myself thinking about the dynamics of each one even when I wasn't reading. This isn't a feel good, make-me-feel-all-warm-and-fuzzy-inside story that you will be smiling about all day about. It's a dark, twisted, fucked up tale about some dark, twisted, fucked up characters. But, they are real. They have real problems; real stories and real heartbreak. They feel like real people, not characters in a story. If you read this book (and I highly recommend that you do), I really think that you will come to the same conclusions that I have. Matt has promised that this isn't the end of Seth and I really hope it's true.
To start with, I love that the “hero” of the book REALLY doesn’t fit the normal idea of a hero. Seth is a recently divorced alcoholic (although not really convinced that his drinking is a problem), with a young son, and a cleaning service that isn’t hugely successful. Oh yeah…and because it’s not a normal cleaning service, like the sign says. It’s a word-of-mouth cleaning of ghosts service. Seth sees ghosts. He speaks to ghosts. Although, he doesn’t want to sound TOO crazy, so even his clients don’t know he can speak to them and see them, they only know that he’s good at helping them leave the premises.
Seth sees himself as a disappointment to his son, and generally a waste of person, until his favorite hooker and a very well to do attorney, Evan Gallagher, who is convinced his wife is possessed by a demon, begin to show him just why he’s not a waste of a person. In fact much more valuable than he could imagine. Quite a combination, you say? That’s just the beginning!
I loved sweet, messed up Seth, and each of the relationships he has in this story. Even with his nasty land lady, the hilarious man he gets his favorite lunch from every day, and one of his few true friends that happens to be a detective.
There are so many events that happen so quickly to this man, that it was terribly difficult to put this book down. It was never ending action, and most often faced with a (sometimes perverted) sense of humor. The fact that the hero and his “side kicks” were so far from perfect totally made this book perfect for me. I loved it. I’m a little sad that it doesn’t appear to be a series, because I would like to see what happened in the future, but it still ended perfectly. Definitely worth 5 stars! This Review is copyrighted. The “ghost whisperer” concept gets a major facelift in the first full-length novel by author Matt Schiariti.
Seth Gabriel is a man carrying many crosses: he’s separated from his wife, he throws himself into booze and sex to escape, and he can speak to ghosts, whether he wants to or not. His status as a spiritual medium has long been an unwanted gift… even after he learned to turn it into a career. But when the desperate (and wealthy) attorney Evan Gallagher comes to him for help in dealing with a demon, Seth is forced to finally confront a long-buried secret from his past, and come to terms with his unusual abilities.
Beneath the cover lies an engrossing story populated by multi-faceted characters, realistic settings, complex plotting and supernatural suspense. The tale is told entirely from Seth’s perspective from beginning to end, providing a less omniscient, but also a pleasantly familiar viewpoint; the everyman faced with an extraordinary problem. Matt Schiariti effectively balances the eerier aspects with a welcoming, down-to-earth humor that makes for an enjoyable, and often laugh-out-loud, read that’s difficult to put down once opened to the first page. Every one of his disparate major characters is well-established, defined by some tragic event, and by the end of the story they’ve all grown up considerably, united by common experience.
The conclusion moves things toward an interesting new direction, but teasingly leaves several questions unanswered. I, for one, would love to see Seth and company return in additional installments that build on what was established here, as there is the making of a great series with these characters. Very fine work.
Holy Deity!!! It is only June and I think I have found my favorite book of the year, fore I don't think anything can come close to the enjoyment I experienced with this book. There are so many thing about this book that put it on the top of my favorite list that it is hard to list them all. It has a wonderful humor aspect, pulling in pop culture references that can lead to a reader laughing out loud for minutes at a time, as well as having an adventurous thrill that makes it so hard to put down. The characters are another high point of this book. Seth Gabriel has be one of the spunkiest smacked asses I have ever read and I absolutely LOVE him! He is funny, sarcastic, and an all around ladies man, however, when it comes to his "Cleaning Service" he is a Grade A business man with a need for money. The relationships that he creates with his clients as well as the people in his life are extremely entertaining, making him a magnet for not only the dysfunctional (but then again any one that can see ghost is not going to attract the most normal people), but for trouble as well. In reading this book the reader will be hooked on the depth of the character relations and their tie into the plot. Each character's background ties in to the events going on, leaving the reader with such a intimate bond with the characters that for a second or two reality will fade in to this wonderful world providing the escape that every reader needs.
I hope one day Matt Schiariti will grace us with a series based on Seth Gabriel's adventures with the world of the paranormal, as well as, with the true fights of a human being. I look forward to reading and reviewing many more of his works that he may have up his sleeve.
My favorite genre’ to read is Murder Mysteries, then next would be Paranormal. Ghosts of Demons Past covers both of those and more!
Right from the very first page this books sucks you in and doesn't let you go. Seth is seventeen when he has a substitute teacher in one of his classes and discovers she is the ugliest, scariest demon he’s ever seen. He’s so scared he runs right out of the school. Of course nobody believes him and it sets the stage for pretty much the rest of his life. All of the characters that you meet along the way in this book are very well-defined and their personalities are so that I could see them in my mind’s eye. I think my favorite character; next to Seth would be Homer. What a great guy, nothing bothers him and he loves everybody! This is a must read book if you like a good mystery, murder, ghosts and demons! You really need to read it for yourself to find out what Seth does, where he goes and of course who he meets throughout his life. I don’t want to spoil it for you but there is a very good twist at the end. I hope Mr. Schiariti plans on doing a second novel involving Seth, but whatever he does I’ll be following him and reading everything he writes!

So words to describe this book are Fantastic, funny and totally gripping. I was totally gripped from the start of this book. Seth Gabriel is a ghost hunter. No one knows he can talk to ghosts but he has made a business out of it by getting rid of ghosts. Business is going well and because of the things he can see, he has an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. He gets hired by Courtney Reeves to get rid of a ghost in her house and Evan Gallagher hires him because he believes his wife is possessed by a demon but the problem that Seth doesn't believe in demons but Evan is offering a lot of money to help him which Seth can't refuse. You do find out a lot about Seth and his life and you go along. At first I didn't think much of Seth but as the story processes, you understand more about Seth and the things he's sees. I was really hooked on this book and I had to make myself put it down at times. There were a few funny moments. One I laughed out loud at for ages. Just an all round great book. I was so pleased I got to read and it a a bit gutted I finished it so quick. Highly recommend this book. It is so worth reading, you will not be disappointed. Loved it!
Seth Gabriel is a Medium. With the ability to talk to the dead Seth earns a living helping ghosts move on. In order to not seem crazier then what his clients already think, Seth acts how his clients expect….burning sage, lighting candles and using theatrics. However, the reality is, he simply talks to the ghosts, lets them know what’s going on and helps them to move on. Business is slow, but in the span of a couple days he is approached by two different clients. What Seth doesn’t know is that everything is connected and these connections will cause a huge bump in Seth’s already bumpy existence. I really enjoyed this book. It was different. Suspenseful with a lot of humor it was a fun read. I really enjoyed the “Sethisms” as I started calling Seth’s random terminology and sarcastic and witty remarks. Seth has no luck, whatever can go wrong does. You can’t help but totally love the guy, with his over indulgence in tequila and hookers you totally root for him to find his happiness. Ghosts of Demons Past was a book that you just don’t want to put down cause you really want to see what Seth has to say next, and what will happen as the story gets Seth into much deeper problems. This story was so well done and set at a perfect pace.
I decided to read this book because I became Facebook friends with the author and the description sounded intriguing. Who doesn't like a good ghost story?
From the very beginning I was captivated. Realizing that I was thoroughly enjoying the read, when I got to 48% on my Kindle I found myself hoping that the second half of the book didn't fall flat. It didn't!!
From beginning to end this was a great read, very enjoyable. The main character really carries the story and he has just enough snark to make the pace go by quickly but not be too over the top.
There's also a good deal of heart in the book as he struggles with his demons, both past and present. I rooted for him all the way through.
The other characters are equally vivid and brought to life by the author's hand, making each well-rounded, three dimensional.
I know other reviewers are clamoring for more of Seth, the ghost hunter, and that would be nice, but I'll be happy with whatever the author chooses to write next. I'm a fan.
I read a LOT of urban fantasy books, and very few of them get five stars from me. However, Ghosts of Demons Past is so well-written and so much fun to read that it easily makes my Top-10 List for the year. I really want to read about Seth Gabriel's continuing adventures and I hope this will become a series!
If you don't fall in love with the characters in this book, there's something wrong with you. Seriously, see a doctor. Seth is a little rough around the edges- OK, a LOT rough- but he's the kind of character you can't help but root for. And possibly take home to give him a cup of coffee and a bath. The secondary characters are every bit as much fun, and the ending definitely leaves some potential to explore them further (I'm trying so hard not to give anything away).
Matt Shiariti joins Naomi Clark on my list as one of the best urban fantasy authors out there. I can't recommend this book enough.
The paranormal genre isn't my first choice of reading material, but it runs a close second to mystery/police procedurals. With that in mind, the title, cover art and book description caught my interest. At the start, the abundance of adult language and situations made me wonder if I'd enjoy the story. The answer: a resounding 'yes'. In light of who Seth Gabriel is, as well as his background and lifestyle, the inappropriateness is totally appropriate. In fact, it lent credibility to his firsthand narrative of this story. He is who he is, and that's just how it comes across. There's a genuine likability factor about this protagonist. He's sad but funny--a delicate balancing act Matt Schiariti handled extremely well.
There are some errors missed in the proofreading--not many, but just enough to cause an occasional hitch in the reading. Overall, it's a very well-written story, entertaining from beginning to end. I highly recommend it!
I really enjoyed this book! Seth is definitely not what you would expect of a hero- he's a drunk, a mediocre father, and kind of a pervert- but at least he's honest, and he tries to do the right thing when it counts. I'm always up for some supernatural shenanigans, and this book definitely delivered. I thought the story was unique and I liked that the main character is a middle - aged guy because that's a bit out of the norm these days. I am very excited to see where this series is going. He did a great job with the ending because there's not really a cliff hanger, but there are some really exciting things alluded to that I definitely want to find out about!
Let me just say right now I LOVE MATT SCHIARITI. You sir have turned me on to reading the horror genre. Once again he has written a story that I just didn't want to put down. I had to force myself to stop reading this book so I could get some sleep. I felt every emotion that the characters felt. I laughed, I cried and I trembled in fear. I loved the way the story flowed and sucked me in. Once again I felt like I was actually part of the story. I look forward to reading more of Matt's books. I'm giving this book 5 stars and highly recommend everyone to get a copy.
This book was one I saw recommended on a blog. Up front, I'll say I dislike reading books in which the 'hero' resorts to alcohol to 'resolve' personal issues, but I am glad I overlooked my personal bias to read the book anyway. Absolutely great plot. Yes, Seth is a heavy drinker, and I cringed at all the times he was in the bar lining up shots, but it was a valid side-effect of the events that shaped his life- so, in this case, appropriate. I loved the book (cringing aside) and found it fast-paced and engaging. Well worth taking time to read. I will look for more books by this author!
I enjoyed this book very much. Seth, you gotta love him. He is rough around the edges, a bit of a bum but relatable and lovable. Seth is a cleaner of ghosts and things that go bump in the night. Business is slow. He is going through a divorce. He has a 12 year old son and his parenting sills are questionable. Good story line, great characters. Funny at times. Overall a good read. I hope there will be a sequel.
this book wasn't what I thought but I found myself unable to stop reading. this is one amazing book that takes you to places you didn't even think you were going. this is a definite read it will suck you in and hold on. I look forward to more books from Matt schiariti
As a fan of the supernatural I found this book very good. And the growing relationship between Seth and Jamie was icing on the cake. Looking forward to more Seth and Jamie ghostwhispering adventures please.
Loved it! This book had it all, and then some! Ghosts, demons, a little horror & suspense, humor and even some romance. All of the characters were very well written and the story moved along perfectly. I'm hoping to read about more of Seth's "cleaning" adventures in the future!!
I loved reading this book. I received the book through a giveaway from the author. After talking with the author I definitely see where the characters humor comes from. I would love to read more books from this author.
Seth Gabriel is not exactly your average family man: more like an all-time mess-up. His job of helping ghosts depart to the beyond is not exactly average either. After living a life in which he routinely sees ghosts, you would think he is basically unflappable, but that isn't true. Destiny has some real shocks waiting for Seth, and so the adventure begins.
This novel has adventure, action, romance, humor, mysticism, and is a full on read. The plot zooms along with short chapters, and plenty of cliffhanger chapter endings. The book really was a pleasure to read.
Schiariti has created characters that I cared about. I really wanted things to work out for Seth and others in the story too. I was interested to see how these characters developed and the life lessons they learned.
As I said, this book really was fun to read. I am happy to award it 5 stars.
Seth is going through a divorce and his son is having trouble in school. He also has an unorthodox job: he’s a “cleaner” (he cleans out ghosts from places.) He’s your average, everyday ghost hunter. He’s crass, bitter, snarky, and tells it like it is. He brings paranormal equipment just for show, to appease his clients. The truth is: he sees dead people. Been that way since he was a kid, often being made fun of for talking to his “imaginary friends.”
So he’s an “expert” on ghosts. Could demon possession also be up his alley?
This had a nice concept, but it was slow and a bit daunting. Not quite as scintillating, but okay.
An amazing story by Matt Schiariti. Seth Gabriel sees and talks to ghosts. As a child growing up, he had a hard time keeping it to himself as nobody believes him anyway not he his mother. As an adult, it’s even harder. Evan Gallagher approach’s him convinced his wife Amanda is possessed by a demon. Ends up it’s the same Demon from his high school past days. So much ups and downs, and trouble followed Seth everywhere and he’s trying to keep everyone around him safe. A great story to read.
