The first book in Maytee Aspuro y Gonzalez's trilogy, Hesed tackles one our most controversial modern-day issues. Hesed is the story of two very different women, Reverend Elizabeth (Beth) Kelly, an Episcopalian priest and Nicole Thera, a respected business woman and the owner of a popular local nightclub catering to the gay/lesbian community. Despite tempestuous beginnings and at times against their better judgment, the women establish an unorthodox friendship that will eventually challenge the young priest to rethink all she's ever believed about her religion and about herself.

Like the only other reviewer mentioned, this book is really religion focused (it's very church-y), and the religious talk can get really over-whelming when reading. I think I just kept on reading because it's well-written and also just to see how they would get together at the end, but it's definitely not for everyone.

The upside is that after reading this, I discovered the author has actually written a conqueror story (yes!). It's the "My Lord" series, and it is a great read - angsty, lovely, nuanced and very well-written, showing that love is not a easy journey at all. Definitely up there among my fav conqueror stories. So if you liked conqueror stories, check the My Lord series out.

This book doesn't deserve my 4stars because it was as lesfic fulfilling as the many worthwhile books on this subject... The fact is, it wasn't.
This book deserves my multiple star rating because it kind of speaks to me. Religion is an undulating state in most of the people I know (mine inclusive) and this book came close to voicing some of the undulating thoughts. So yes it is full of religious gabs but I'll have to say they were well used and simply thought provoking.

I am not a friend of clichés and this book is full of them. Shame as the story is good but lacks the unexpected turns that contributes to a good story.
