Mary Ella Waller (March 1, 1855 – June 14, 1938) was an American writer and educator from New England whose work encompassed children's stories, translations of German verse and more than twenty novels.
This is the second time I’ve read this book. The single best book I have ever read. No joke. The crazy part is I found it at an antique store. 95 year old book. 49 cents. The title grabbed my attention.
The first chapter is odd and I almost gave up. It quickly gets better. Half way through a bomb is dropped and I cried very hard (happy tears). Another bomb toward the end. Mary E Waller pulled it all together.
Knowing the spoiler made me want to read it again for hints. I cried so much the second time because I knew what was going to happen. Again, happy tears. Mimi bought six copies of this book. Five are the originals and 1 the newer reprint. It changed my purpose on this earth.
Holding a nearly 100 year old book while reading the subtle differences in language and social interaction is also a nice treat.
Note that my scale is 3 stars for a very good book. 4 stars if I will read again. 5 stars only for “changed my life”.
