Puntea Pisicilor

Rate this book
With the appearance of The Cats' Bridge in 1890, the critics began to admit there had come into the literary arena a man sufficiently original to erect his own standard. Hermann Sudermann (1857 - 1928) dominated the German stage for nearly a quarter century, and was considered one of the greatest figures in contemporary German literature. He studied philosophy and history at Konigsberg University, and continued to write right up to his death, his last play appearing in 1925 and his last novel in 1928. Sudermann achieved surprising success in passing from novel-writing to dramatic authorship. He had a style of utmost distinction, and was well skilled in technique.

Educated at Koningsberg University and the University of Berlin, Sudermann had to give up his studies because of financial difficulties. He worked for a time as a tutor before becoming a journalist in Bern, Switzerland. He returned to Germany in 1881 and became the editor of the Deutsches Reichsblatt. Thereafter, he devoted himself to writing. In 1886, he published Zweilicht, his first novel, and followed in 1887 with Frau Sorge, which was critically acclaimed. His first drama, Die Ehre, or The Honour appeared in 1889 and was enormously successful. Sudermann also produced a number of short stories. His other works include Geschwister (1888), Der Katzensteg (1890), Sodoms Ende (1891), Die Heimat (1893), Morituri (1896), Es Lebe das Leben! (1902), Es War (1904) and Stein unter Steinen (1905).

I remember I simply loved this book when I read it, it was extremely emotionally - powerful and the ending was so heartbreaking...
It is a marvellous love story and it could also be considerated historical fiction. It is worth reading this wonderful, well-written and touching book.

"Puntea pisicilor" este un roman de dragoste și ficțiune istorică, a cărui acțiune se desfășoară într-un teritoriu dezbinat de lupta pentru putere și trădare.

Totuși, chiar și într-un spațiu atât de tensionat, dragostea își face cumva loc și îl atinge pe protagonist atunci când se aștepta mai puțin.

E o lectură ușoară, relaxantă, așa cum merităm fiecare dintre noi din când în când.

It is easily one of the best books i have ever read. An easy read, yet so emotional and captivating, The cat’s bridge tells the story of a young soldier who falls in love with a girl he cannot have, while struggling to defend his honor for his father’s sins.

Relaxanta, de vara, de citit in vacanta. Nimic iesit din comun la ea, o poveste cam siropoasa, dar simpatica. Daca vreti sa cititi ceva mai complex, nu e alegerea potrivita.

A novel about love, every kind of love: filial and romantic love, friendship, infatuation and patriotism. Unsurprisingly, it can bring out the best and worst in people.

Some Prussian baron helped Napoleon's troops, treason, right? Not so fast, he loved the "chimera of Polish nationality" on Prussian, read German, soil. Still treason? Unfortunately, this is only lightly touched upon.

Fathers do not fare well in this horrifying tale of betrayal and redemption; Boleslav's; Regina's; Felix's; Helene's, sins of the fathers indeed! Boleslav accepts without condoning, Felix and Helene are tools and too much their father's offspring to realize it. Regina, daughter, slave and servant, is the best person in the village. Does as she's told by father, tyrant and master (in those days how could she not?) but still keeps her humanity and dignity, despite being ostracised by all. Regina stays true to herself despite unfair mores and unwritten rules, while still being molded by them. Quite the accomplishment for the daughter of the village drunk.

Boleslav slowly, painfully slowly, realises how awesome she really is but there is much in the way of both uniting. Social norms, village brutes, idiotic thinking, misplaced blame and first loves keep them apart.

Will he come to his senses before it's too late?
