Somewhere along the Welsh border, the folk in the insular village of Seeton continue to go about their daily business, unaware that the world around them is falling prey to the reanimated dead. Their routine lives are abruptly turned on their heads when a lone scientist arrives in their village, with the virus close behind.
Dean Kasnovski had arrived home, his mind laden with the guilt of leaving his fellow researchers to perish in the secret laboratory hidden deep under the streets of London.
Dean is positive that he can found a cure but time is running out, he isn’t the only one to arrive in the village. As the villagers’ departed ones return to feast on their warm bodies, Seeton’s surviving population direct their hate towards the strangers in the village.
Ian Woodhead is just past the age of forty. He lives in the north of England and is married to a wonderful woman. He has forgotten how many children he has. He had been writing for nearly twenty years but has only just gained the confidence to start showing his work. Ian finds it a little creepy writing about himself in the third person.
London calling.....A science experiment gone wrong...London is in chaos. What i like most about this one is the local characters portrayed in the London suburbs...How do they handle Armageddon?....i also noted a creative nod to Alfred Hitchcock....a quick, fun read full of some of London's Zombie best!
I fully confess that I am not generally a zombie story fan these days. That is not to say that I don’t like them, that I don’t ever read them or watch them anymore. I just generally don’t and I won’t go out of my way for one anymore. They are zombie stories. There is a virus/infection/plague/curse/what-have-you that makes zombies and people fight them and fight each other and fight to survive. All very well, but I have become too critical of them to enjoy them.
But sometimes I have occasion to partake of one.
Ian offered this book free when you sign up for his mailing list. Since I am a fan of many of his other works, it was only polite to read the gift.
I am glad I did.
This is not just another zombie story.
This is a story about a researcher full of guilt, cowardice, and personal flaws who desperately wants to set things right. It is a story about a runaway who fell afoul of life and drug lords, fleeing back home to set her life right. It is a story about thugs with a twisted sense duty and loyalty and the horrors that define their sense of what is right. It is a story about the people of a small village and how ensuing events shape their lives. It is a story about all of these things crashing together with zombies in the mix.
The constant tension, suspense, and gruesome goings on in this page-turner will do horrid things to your blood pressure.
Then, there is the ending. The unexpected ending leaves you with a juvenile feeling of “uh uh!!!” Which you will likely say out loud.
Whether or not you are a fan of zombie tales, this book is not to be missed.
This is the story of Dean, a scientist working in a secret underground lab in London. Something has gone wrong and all his coworkers are turning into the undead. He returns home to the sleepy village of Seeton to try and work on a cure, unaware the horror is following him and that the villagers are highly suspicious and mistrustful of strangers. Together with another returnee, Alison, they work together to try and solve the problem.
This is another belter by Ian. He is fast becoming the master of the zombie genre, I have yet to read one of his that I haven't liked. Once again the characters are believable and tangible. The village of Seeton was lifelike and just sleepy enough to be realistic. The story flowed nicely, and I found myself rooting for Dean and Alison to get through the horror intact. There were the obligatory odious characters you just have to love to hate and Ian does seem to make them particularly obnoxious! The ending was satisfying and I wasn't disappointed.
I recommend this as a must read for fans of Ian's and also to newcomers as it is not your usual run of the mill zombie slash fest.
Disclaimer....this is my review for ZombieDead as this is the same story re-edited and with a new cover and title.
( I was given a copy for an honest review. ) This is a wonderful take on the zombie genre. There are characters you will hate, some you like and some you just wish to go..........HUH? Which is ok. You will find out that the ones you hate do have redeeming qualities. I began hating a character but as the end neared I actually rather liked him. There is one character I just hollered YES when they met a bad? justified ? ending. I can't say a whole lot about the story as it would have many spoilers and I would never do that to a review. Better for the reader to find out the story on their own. This is a quick read and he has so many more books that you will wish to grab all his other works. Try this out and stay safe out there.
Welcome to Seeton a small nondescript local town for local people, and also the place where Dean Kavnoski was born, the man partly responsible for the potential downfall of mankind.
We follow Dean and Alison, who's on the run from Birminham trying to escape a local gangster, as they fight their way through the village from both the increasing amount of undead and enraged locals who are blaming Dean for all their troubles.
This is an early short from Ian Woodhead that he has had re-edited and re-released and I'm glad he has as this is a really good story. Also I've read some strange character deaths before, but death by sparrow is a completely new one for me.
I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an HONEST opinion.
Once again, Mr. Woodhead shows us what his warped crazy mind is capable of! I loved this book, from beginning to end. The characters are likable, and the plot is VERY believable(shudder) so it is no surprise that others thought the same, that this is Ian Woodhead at his best! I have read other works by him, and he continues to deliver in this genre, making it fresh and new each time! Zombie lovers will not be disappointed!
A good stand alone zombie story which started off slowly, but picked up pace once the contagion started to take a serious hold.
It's a fairly short book but a good introduction to the way the author likes to write. Check out the Unwashed Dead series which currently stands at 6 books, with more on the way, and you'll see what I mean.
The story moves well and it was easy to relate to the various characters, and don't forget the walking dead. A virus escapes from a secret lab and begins to spread quickly. A scientist escapes and heads home to hopefully find an antidote before its too late. There are sub plots and plenty of action. A good zombie read; although it ends with a typical B-movie ending.
First I've read of Ian Woodhead. Enjoyed it but couldn't help thinking of Shaun of the Dead the whole way through it. Need to read more to he a fair judge.
This review was written before I started to take my reviewing seriously. I would need to re-read the book to give it a serious, detailed and fair review so the above review was what I posted at the time.
La verdad a la mitad de la historia ya estaba aburrido. El final es lo peor, como sacado de la manga. Nada fuera de lo común. No es una novela que recordarás por mucho tiempo.
