"It is true...Kingdoms have falllen because the beauty of a woman became the universe of a man..."
Dilshan writes well. He should, being an English graduate. But I find his writings a little wordy, to the point at times, it takes the attention away from the plot. Perhaps it's just me. Nevertheless he has hit the nail on its head with Omunkashyu, particularly with this quote.
If I can weigh all the novels I have read before from varied authors both local & foreign against Omunkashyu, or even this single quote, the latter would overweigh the former by many folds.
In a world where sex has been overated and sold at a price that it is not worthy of, and young virgin girls are being made "Halal", to be sold in meat markets that no one knows exist; women of sexually active ages are used as sex baits without their knowledge by various unscrupulous men to lure other men and women to support their evil plans, Dilshan captures the essence of relationships between young men and women if not anywhere else, at least in the subcontinent with his this novel.
It is amazing the ability Dilshan has, to take a simple event and write an entire novel around it. He proves this in his other short novel I happen to have read 'The Last Latte' too, out of which, spin off stories are already haunting my head.
Omunkashyu however hits home with me, since it describes a scenario that is similar to one I have personally experienced myself, a life defining one at that, and this quote of course sums it all up.
Within the body of the novel he presents many different side stories to which I am also attracted to, and feel could be developed into stories of their own right, if Boange is interested. Same goes to The Last Latte too.
One such story is woven around exactly the opposite philosophy of this quote from Omunkashyu.
How a would be king or a princess, hold himself from giving into his temptations & vulneraibilities provoked by a young desirable woman, in order to protect the very sovereignty of his kingdom, at the end in winning the long game, by winning both his kingdom and also the woman of his desire.
It's been ages since I've last spoken to Boange, but if he is reading this and is interested, we could talk business, perhaps over a Latte, with a couple of movies in the works too. I mean hollywood blockbusters produced by Marvel and the likes.
Movies, contrary to what Hollywood has been promoting all this time, that aim to inclucate healthy sexual ethos, bedroom etiquette, and promote building healthy and lasting cross gender relationships, regardless of involvement of sex, or sexual orientations, including sexual ethos, relationships and encounters between people of the same sex or in the non-heteronormative community. Such movies I believe are a need of the hour.
In a world where the 'Body Count' is a measure of sexual & overall prowess of a man & manlyhood, it, I believe is up to us, as men coming from allegedly sexually backward cultures, to tell the world, or the western world, that it is in fact a man's capacity to love a woman, that should be at the center of the measurement of his manly prowess.
Similary the perils of hooking up with strangers in a volutile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world, where we are being watched 24/7, and 365 days of the year by men and women whose minds are a little more than twisted, in the guise of protecting and providing security for us.
There was a time, I thought sex was the primary basis of attraction between men and women, like biological anthropologists such as Desmond Moris in his books, The Naked Ape and The Human Zoo, have pointed out, procreation is one of our live's objectives as biological beings. But recent experiences have left me questioning this premise.
I am increasingly beginning to believe what truly attracts a man to a woman and vice versa is something beyond sex, and sex is just an outcome of this attraction. What is this thing beyond sex? Perhaps it is love? Pethaps it is purpose? Perhaps it is different to different people? I would not know.
I don't claim to have figured everything out, but at least I have figured out that there's more to it than sex, and there's more that needs figuring out, as opposed to those who believe it all boils down to the basic structures or anatomy of men and women. Sex as an act made possible by anatomical compatibility, of a hole and a prick, that you could poke in it, leading to sexual practices and ethos of questionable nature. As the philosophy seems to leave out factors like, age, consent, sexual orientations, personal preferences, values, and ethos, in sexual acts, where the more powerful party is entitled to dictate the terms of sexual encounters to other less powerful individuals, at times claiming and justifying it as a "basic need".
A rather detrimental philosophy in my view, as displayed by the recent conduct of such people. A philosophy that requires getting rid of, whatever the cost is, as the future of not only our current civilization but also of the evolutionary trajectory, and even continuity of the entire human species depends on it
Finally, this novella by Boange is such a great read to all young adults that are just beginning to experience and explore sex, sexuality, sexual and romantic relationships and encounters, and particularly a must read book by every Royalist!
Well I was excited to read this book simply because Dilshan is one of my dear friends from school. I think I’m biased with my views, so I firmly believe it’s a great book that explores and captures philosophy in a large spectrum of subjects.
Bravo my friend!
It’s fantastic although I think it should’ve been a larger book hence 4 stars! 😜
