Learn magic? Lina Lorix would rather die. Her only lawful choices are to attend one of Delaria’s magic schools and serve the Amethyst Crown, or take the Rite of Annulment. The Rite will strip her of her power and her obligations, but it also might kill her. When the Rite backfires, Lina’s wild magic lashes out and kills the mages around her. Guilt-ridden and terrified, she seeks temporary refuge with the only person who might be able to help her—a dwarf named Oskar Stonefist. Lina plans to leave the city, but Stonefist convinces her to stay and offers her a chance at to track down the leader of a slaving ring that preys on beggars and street children and bring him to justice. At the Abbey, a religious school that trains magic through prayer and spellwork, Lina’s twin sister Moriah faces bullying because of her exceptional abilities. When Lina is taken by the slavers, Moriah’s efforts to save her sister will push her magic to new heights, but the other students’ jealousy will have dire consequences. Neither the Lorix sisters nor the city of Ebonstone will ever be the same again.
This was a fantastic read! The world is rich and engaging, from vivid settings to vivacious background characters. The Lorix sisters are charming and real. I'm excited for more from this author and in this series!
