Death is a dream that chases us all our lives. Each slice cuts us a little deeper, and every drop of blood is a tear shed in silence. Some of us find poetry at the edge of a blade. For some of us, every breath leaves a scar.
C.D. Bennett is an author, poet, and screenwriter with a passion for horror and Gothic literature. His work has been called "heart-wrenching," "haunting," and "poetry in hellish motion."
This was one of my finds on Amazon and I've got to say that I was REALLY impressed with it. It is creepy, crazy and the ending ... you have GOT to read it. Great little story.
A great psychological thriller from C.D. Bennett. You won't find any fluff in his writing, this is straight forward engagement. While it doesn't lack for descriptive prose, putting the reader right in the moment, it drives like a sweaty mule skinner towards the ending without extraneous words or narrative of the emotional and environmental descriptions. Bennett writes like a finely tuned German engineer, carefully choosing his words and scene transitions. The primary character is revealed off-handedly in a macro view, and then the storyline peels back her motivation, fleshing out her personality until the final moments in the book.
If you want a well written psych horror/thriller to send shivers up your back and raise the hair on your head, this is the one.
A fascinating, well-written glimpse into the mind of someone who has clearly had enough. "Slice" is a gore-laden character study of a young man obsessed by and longing for his own death. It's unfortunate, however, that he was never taught one valuable lesson in life: be careful what you ask for...you just might get it...
In his debut short story, C.D. Bennett takes us into the heart of a tortured soul at the end of his rope, feeling the sting of every slice as if it were our own through graphic and disturbing imagery that will haunt the reader for the rest of their days.
I find myself at a loss for words when a review comes in for one of my short stories that hopes for a more elaborate or lengthier version, which happens more than not. I feel like the authors who have the capability to bleed a character’s emotions onto the page in the shortest frame of time possible, have a unique gift with words. This feat is the appeal of the fantastically told short story. That’s the whole point. If said beautifully told story was a full length novel, it would just be another book. With all the time in the world, humans can achieve anything. But it takes a special brand of person – a special brand of artist – to use only the resources, and time, at his fingertips, to create something beautiful. Bennett did not have a pen. He did not have paper. He had his own blood and the walls that boxed him in, and he painted them red.
I must find myself, now, a hypocrite. I must admit, that yes, I wanted to read more of Slice. I wanted to feel more of the pain that our protagonist forces upon us. But, again. The short story has appeal, when written properly, and Slice is the product of an author who writes with passion and holds nothing back.
A piece that not only makes you feel something, but makes you feel everything, Slice is a darkly beautiful work of art that I would highly recommend to every fan of the written word.
A short story that will stick with you for days. Be careful how you live and what you wish for. You may just get it. The words in this story not only jump out at you but the narrative beats you senseless in a way and you will feel right down to your soul. Try to imagine your worst nightmare times 10. An amazing quick story by an amazing writer to watch out for. This is the epitome of what a good horror story should be. Great job!
