Although a truly gifted hairstylist, Kiri Koshiba has no interest in using her talent to pursue fame and fortune, unlike the three popular boys in the ""Scissors Project" at school. Determined to become the best makeover team in Japan, they give showy makeovers to handpicked girls. As much as Kiri tries to shy away from the Scissors Project spotlight, she finds herself responding to beauty's call...
The entire gang travels to Karuizawa to hone their skills. There, they meet Chihiro Osawa, a famous but nasty hairstylist who breaks Kiri's scissors on purpose! Even more distressing to Narumi is a dream he has about Kiri.
So. Very. Good! Probably one of the best volumes yet! I loved seeing Kiri shine in this volume and seeing her get angry. It was different. I don’t think I’ve considered her uncaring, but it was nice to see her be really emotionally moved. I’m curious to see how things go for a possible romance? I felt one part was sort of thrown at the reader, but not badly. Just...different?
The furthest I got up to reading ~10 years ago (wtf is time) was volume 5, so for the second half of the series this isn't a reread, but my first time with the volumes! It definitely feels weird to be reading a series I'm so nostalgic for, but not having that familiarity with what's happening with the characters now. It's also cool to see how the manga holds up without having the nostalgia-goggles on for the plot development. And I loved this one! Beauty Pop is so camp, and I appreciate where it plays with gender norms despite being a pretty heteronormative 2000s manga. It's so underrated, and I wish it'd go back in print 😭 though that would also piss me off because I've already spent more than 100 euros trying to get physical copies of the books.
In Beauty Pop, Volume 6 - The Scissor Project meets yet another beautician on their journey to be the best. This book is adventurous and well written as I never lost interest in this book. The pictures are eye catching and balance out the dialogue of the characters. The crazier the dialogue, the crazier the illustration. The character's personalities are interesting and make a crazy, drama-filled book. Over all this book is well done and makes me wish the series was longer.
I had some issues with this volume. First - did not like that the little sister is still around. She is highly annoying and I wish her story line would go away. Second - the Osawa-san character who thinks he's all that and then some and purposely sabotages others is just too over the top for me. Third - the dual Harumi character - what?!?! This didn't even make sense. Actually the whole book didn't make sense. It kept jumping from story line to story line. I kept flipping back a page and making sure that I hadn't skipped a page in between because it just didn't flow from one to another. I hope that this is just an anomaly in the series and the rest of it gets back to what the first five volumes were like.
As I said in reviewing the earlier volumes, between 2-3 stars for me, so rounded up, but barely right now. It has its funny moments, and the art is enjoyable, but mostly I'm enjoying it now as a nostalgic reread from high school.
I still enjoy the art, but I'm remember this point in the series from the first time I read it - waiting for more depth to the plot, more depth to the characters. There's only so much chaotic shoujo schtick you can stretch into multiple volumes (even the kids at Ouran grew up through the series). Still, with only two volumes left...
As Kiri's star rises (with and without the help of the SP), I feel Arai's still getting the ball rolling for what's to come with her character. Osawa proved to be another character who wasn't who he was supposed to be (not a bummer). Niida might actually have a heart of gold under his tough persona of now wanting to lose. And who's this mystery man posing as Narumi? There's enough here to be entertained by, even if it can feel silly. At least I can see gears turning for the potential main romance.
As someone who was just hungering for some good nostalgia, this did not disappoint. I read the first six volumes in one day, and I'm just amazed by how much more I can appreciate the story and the characters behind it.
Obviously there are some things a little laughable (like how a group of guys would essentially start a salon club), but embracing the craziness really does lead to a pleasant reading experience.
Ah, the plot thickens! And Kiri loses her cool! This was a pretty high stakes volume. It was fast paced compared to the other books and I loved it. This series is great!
It's interesting how the Japanese can turn everything into a battle!

This one seems to be the best volume I've read so far...
I like the challenge between Kiri and the other guy, the mean one. I love the way Kiri cares about people: she doesn't want to show it off but she cares and she always wants to make people happy. It's a sort of naive attitude but... yeah, sometimes you need something like that.
I really love the color palette of the cover.
Japanese girls sure worry about little details about their appearance...
And now volume 7... Every old series has a volume that's hard to come by. Beauty Pop's number 7. I may have been able to get a French edition, so that I'll be able to continue the series.
In which the S.P. guys head to get in some practice and see one of the top beauticians in Japan at work. Too bad he's a total jerk! It's him against Kiri in yet another makeover battle, and he's not exactly playing fair. But obviously Kiri kicks his ass anyway, helping two sisters with different problems at the same time.
Beauty Pop from the start was a great read, i enjoyed immensely the action between Kiri and Narumi, how she doesn't care in the world and how he breaks out in hives whenever a girl touches him. Kiri changed his life from a young age, which he finds out later on, so he sees her as a rival and eventually as a girl he loves.
Series Review: Beauty Pop is exactly like its name very cute and funny. It has a unique premise of makeovers and the plot can be unexpectedly dramatic at times. The characters are what had me hooked as I loved them all too much to get bored. I feel the ending was rushed but over all it fit the story well. I recommend this manga to those who like very light and cutie stories.
Beauty Pop, Volume 6 was such a good read with a great storyline and good humour to match. I would definitely recommend this book to those who love reading manga, as well as those who are looking for a quirky, yet dominant female lead role. The only unfortunate thing I found with this book is that they no longer make hardcopies and that you can only read them as ebooks now.
I enjoyed this much more than the previous volumes - Iori was in it less and although there were more hair competitions, it was a very different setting. The story about the imposter was really fun, and it's interesting to see the beginning's of Narumi's feelings for Kiri manifest...
Slightly more interesting, but still meh with plots and stuff. I think I'll finish this just to tie up loose ends. Yes, the noblest of reasons to finish something.
This series was soooo good although I've read other mangas with a similar concept, my eyes were glued to the pages of every single volume from this series! good author!
The lookalike Naru storyline seems a bit old, but otherwise it's still a fun series and worth reading. And this is one of my favorite covers thus far. Yay for Kanako!
