USA Today Bestselling author Nicole Flockton writes sexy contemporary romances, seducing you one kiss at a time as you turn the pages. Nicole likes nothing better than taking characters and creating unique situations where they fight to find their true love.
On her first school report her teacher noted "Nicole likes to tell her own stories". It wasn’t until after the birth of her first child and after having fun on a romance community forum that she finally decided to take the plunge and write a book.
Apart from writing Nicole is busy looking after her very own hero – her wonderfully supportive husband, and two fabulous kids. She also enjoys watching sports and, of course, reading.
Dawn's life can only be described as ghastly. She walks in a twilight world, unable to face the day, a woman who 'man's' the night shift, night after night. As the broken bodies are brought in, there is no balance, no day to balance the night, no health to balance the sickness. The loss of her husband and child has left her a wife without a husband and a mother without a child. A woman without a life. As a nurse, her commitment to the patients injured in emergency is commendable. But does she have an agenda?
Then, paramedic Andrew comes back into her life. The man who left her years before, without a backward glance, leaving her devastated. The man who broke her heart and left her to pick up the pieces of a shattered life. Which she'd successfully got back together until it shattered again.
Can Andrew and Dawn get things right this time around? Can Dawn leave the gruesome night shift life and step out into the sun? Andrew wants to make it happen. But can he?
This is no flirty, frothy romance, but an intense, emotional story which will leave a lump in your throat at times. But if you like intense, emotional reads, get this.
Finding the man of your dreams during your teenager years is very rare, okay not so rare but holding onto that love found is a complete different story.
You are both still young and have hopes and dreams, and if the dreams don't meet up in the middle there really is no chance of the relationship working.
In this read from author Nicole Flockton she tells the story of Dawn, she once met the man of her dreams but then he went off seeking adventure and left her behind. She dealt with the pain and heartache only to find more heartache. So when the man of her dreams Andrew walks back into her life she understandably would rather run away then run back into his arms again.
The character of Dawn was a tragic one, she has suffered loss of loved ones more than once and that has made her the type of person that would rather just focus on work and nothing else, for getting attached to anyone and then loosing them would be more than she can bare, she will not put herself at risk again. I did not so much like the character, as yes I could understand she has been hurt and is scared to take a risk at loving again, but the reasoning behind her guilt trip with regards to not being allowed happiness was just a little to unreal. I honestly wanted to grab this character and just shake some sense into her. I did however love that the author uses her past pain to open the road to a new life, but as I said I did really care too much for the reasoning of the guilt.
The character of Andrew was very pleasant, I understood his reasoning for leaving Dawn behind so long ago, all of us needs adventure and sometimes we have no choice but to let go of ones we love in order to go and seek our happiness. I adored that the author lets him be kind and caring and very patient with Dawn, it showed that the man is definitely strong enough to take whatever Dawn and her pain throws his way.
The backdrop and dialogue was well written and had a nice and cosy feeling to it. What I did not like about this read was that it was slow and almost dragged out, yes healing takes time but at times I found myself wanting to shout out " Just spit it out already!"
I feel the author could have moved the healing between Andrew and Dawn to a quicker pace,I think this would have given the read a bit more excitement, which would have let the book just flow a little more.
A nice message of when you love someone set them free if it's meant to be they will come back to you.
Overall a very nice afternoon read, with heartfelt romance and lots of emotion. I recommend this read for lovers of reading romance where past and future collides to make way for a happy ever after.
4 star review "She helps save lives, but can she save herself?"
In Rescuing Dawn by Nicole Flockton Andrew Holmes left Nicole after dating her for two years. He told her he was going to follow his dreams of sailing around the world and he didn’t know when he would be back. After a near death experience at sea he returns home to become a Paramedic and comes face to face with the woman he never forgot. Dawn Granger never truly got over the young man who walked away from her. He had been her entire life. And when Andrew left so did a big piece of her heart. After a number of years met and married Tom, even though the love was more one sided, she had moved on to a certain extent. Then tragedy struck when a car accident took the life of her husband and son. She now finds herself working long hours as an emergency room nurse on the graveyard shift, only to go home eat and go to bed so she can get up and do it all over again. This is how she copes, with the unbearable lost of her husband and young infant son. Dawn is still suffering grief two years later. Dawn has mixed feelings about starting a relationship again with Andrew or any man for that matter. And part of me as a reader totally understood that. I think I would have felt the same feelings to a certain extent, would he walk away again would be at the back of my mind too. I did feel this was great attraction between these two, and that they were meant to be together. I believe Andrew was just very young and selfish in the decisions he made. I had mixed feelings with this story for a couple of reasons. In the story line Dawn is very indecisive weather she wants to be in a relationship with Andrew again or not, and I don’t mean just a few times. The author at one point writes the following. “I want to believe you, but you tell me you’re ready to move forward and then you take three steps back.” That is how I felt this book was for a while. One to two steps forward then a few steps back. And why had Andrew not gone to the trouble to find Dawn when he returned to Perth? But then the Author writes one of the most moving scenes when Dawn and Andrew go away for a few days. And Dawn is having a little bit of a quiet time reflecting, that just brought me to tears. Bottom line is this a good read? Yes at times it is good, but at other times frustrating with Dawn’s Character going back and forth so much.
Rescuing Dawn, a 2013 June Crimson Reads release, took me on the heartfelt journey of Dawn, a nurse who has lost everything in the world that was precious to her. A very good looking blast from her past rolls in thru the emergency doors and like all good paramedics do, Andrew decides he will put 100% effort into a rescue, the rescue of Dawn.
I wouldn’t want to be in Dawn’s shoes and think that the author did a great job of describing how one may feel being in such a situation. I liked Andrew’s character and think that his characteristics suited Dawn and that any other alpha hero wouldn’t have worked in this story. I liked the emergency ward setting and thought it was a fantastic idea by the author to put Dawn in such a setting to enable her character to grieve by sleeping the day away… it was a small detail that helped form Dawn in my mind and understand a little of what she must be going thru.
I found this to be as different from Nicole’s previous books as night is to day. This isn’t a bad thing, I think it’s great when Authors try different things.
Overall a very carefully written tale which covers a range of sensitive issues with respect and sensitivity.
Rescuing Dawn would be a winner with fans of Medical Romances and Sweet lines and for fans of Novella length stories.
Once in a while, I read a book that takes me on a journey I’m not expecting. It’s my own fault. I often don’t read back cover blurbs and simply dive in. From the cover of Rescuing Dawn by Nicole Flockton, I knew this was a romance set in the medical arena, but it was also so much more.
Dawn Granger is an ER nurse, who works the lonely night shift. She’s been working nights for several years, using the isolation of the odd hours to cut herself off from the world. She suffered a heartbreaking tragedy in her life and is trying to cope as best she can. Flockton does a fabulous job of making Dawn’s pain real and developing her as a multi-dimensional character. I felt horrible for Dawn, but I didn’t pity her. I respected her for coming through such a devastating experience. There’s often a fine line between writing a character that annoys readers and a character readers feel for. Flockton does a fabulous job here.
Andrew Holmes also has enormous respect for Dawn and all she’s been through. He’s a paramedic who first met Dawn when they were in high school. He left her to sail around the world and the way he unexpectedly called off their romance makes Dawn reluctant to trust Andrew again. But Andrew doesn’t give up on Dawn. He’s the kind of hero who knows what he wants and goes after it. I love heroes like that, especially when they’re selfless and sexy and romantic. Andrew is definitely sigh-worthy.
If you’ve read Masquerade, you’ll be pleased to see brief appearances from Sophie and Alex in this book. It was fun to see their lives continuing, but Flockton also uses them to further the story and, in particular, Dawn’s internal conflict.
Rescuing Dawn is a well-written novel populated with richly developed characters and believable conflicts. The unique setting—Perth, Australia—is a treat. I loved learning more about the city of Perth. If you’re looking for a great read by an author to watch, check out Rescuing Dawn.
Rescuing Dawn is a fabulous second book in Nicole Flockton’s medical romance series. Nicole once again takes you inside the ER, where senior evening nurse Dawn Granger, runs into new paramedic Andrew Holmes who just happens to be the love of her life. Unfortunately for Dawn, he left her years ago when they were younger to pursue a passion. While he was sailing around the globe, Dawn had moved on, gotten married and had a child. However, a tragic turn of events led to her losing both.
This heart wrenching story addresses the overwhelming grief of losing loved ones under tragic, uncontrollable circumstances. Dawn’s grief is raw and real. As a nurse, she’s taken the grave yard shift as a coping mechanism. This is where she feels most comfortable and in control. During the day, she can shut out the world. Since the accident, she has just been going through the motions.
It’s only when Andrew returns that she begins to see she’s missing out on life. She also realizes her feelings for her first love are still as strong as they were when they were together. It’s Andrew who is able to show Dawn it’s time for her to be happy.
The rekindled romance between Dawn and Andrew is sweet and romantic. Nicole has really captured the feelings of loss - the enormous guilt and vulnerability; the desire to be happy again; and the guilt that those feelings can cause.
I highly recommend this book. As a fun bonus, in it there are small cameos from Masquerade’s loveable characters Sophie, Alex and Phoebe (the first book in the series).
The second in this series of semi-medical romances, Rescuing Dawn is a follow up to Masquerade, Sophie and Alex's story.
Dawn is on eternal night duty which makes everyone grateful but she is really doing it to avoid life. Two years ago she lost her husband and infant son and she's chosen to cut herself off from family and friends. Focussing on her career at night and sleeping through the days is easier than picking up the threads after her terrible loss.
Until the night her first love, Andrew walks into the E.R. as a new Paramedic. That's 'Ambo' for ambulance officer in Australia. Years ago he walked away from Dawn, leaving her to pick up the pieces. Perhaps that is part of the reason she finds it so hard to do it again.
But Andrew is persistent. He knows he lost something important when he walked away back when they were both young and foolish and in love.
This is a really sweet reunion romance with a touch of redemption and a lot of healing. The story plays out in a logical and realistic manner. My only quibble is that I felt with such tragic history, it seemed a little lightweight in places. But a lovely hero and heroine and a very satisfying ending.
I truly enjoyed this book. It is the story of a beautiful young woman, Dawn, who looses her family in a tragic accident. Not being able to climb out of her grief, she buries herself in her job as an Emergency Room nurse. One night a very handsome paramedic comes back into her life, Andrew, who was the true love of her life. Sadly Andrew left her many years ago to follow his dream. Can Dawn and Andrew find their way back together again? You will have to read this beautifully written, sweet, love story to find out. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!
Ok so I like but didn't like a lot of this book. The characters had chemistry cause they had a past together but Dawn aggravated my soul, and at times Andrew didn't seem real. Dawn's whining on and on made me stop reading several times. The book had moments of a good read but not enough.
Normally this isn’t the type of book I’d read. However it is Book 2 of the series. Rarely do I start Book 2 of a series as well. Going from Book 1 to Book 2 it flowed so well. Almost as if the first book continued. I couldn’t stop reading. Book 2 is about a character from Book 1 that is spoke about. Book 2 does reference the main characters from Book 1 so you know where those characters are now in their lives. While I couldn’t relate to what the main character in this story has gone through, I’m sure many could relate. I loved seeing the development of the main character. The main character went from being in such a dark place to a much better place. Everyone copes with what he or she goes through in their own way. Everything happens for a reason. I’m so glad that the main character able to find hope and the reason to continue on with life again. Even though this may not be the book you may relate to I encourage you to continue on with book 2. Highly recommend. Such a great book!
In this second story of the series, we get to really follow Dawn and delve into her past. We meet a new paramedic named Andrew. When he shows up in the ER one night, what happens? What do we learn? How is Dawn rescued in this story? What does Dawn realize? What does Andrew learn about himself? What incredibly stupid thing does Andrew do that almost ruins everything after a picnic he has had with Dawn? Read and see what happens!
RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin' With M. Brennan.
Imagine you're a widowed nurse, working the dreaded night shift in the ER. You're nursing guilt and heartbreak when suddenly, in come the paramedics with an emergency. Only, you can't concentrate on the patient, because you're staring into the eyes of your first love, who left you 10 years ago. He's now a paramedic. And you'll be working with him. A lot.
So goes the story of Dawn, the nurse we first met in Masquerade. This is a great second chance romance between two really good people who deserve happiness after the unspeakable tragedies they've both gone through.
Said it in the last review: I love ALL the characters in this series and could happily read 20 books involving all of them.
Nicole Flockton is another author I’ve been reading in the lead up to the Romance Writers of Australia conference. I’m glad I found Nicole’s work, as Rescuing Dawn is the second in a series (that can be read entirely successfully as a standalone) that is set in my home town of Perth. Another bonus is that it has a medical theme (love these types of books) and that’s pretty realistic. (I say not 100% realistic because as part of my research for this review, I strolled past an ambulance bay and nobody looked as hot as the hero, Andrew)!
Rescuing Dawn is a romance set in the Emergency Department of a major tertiary hospital in Perth (no name is specified, but I’ve got my suspicions!). Dawn is a nurse on permanent night shift – she’s locked herself into her grief after the death of her husband and son. One night she meets a new paramedic delivering a patient – her first love, Andrew. Andrew (or ‘Drew’) left Dawn broken-hearted after deciding to travel the world. Now he’s back and he really wants to rekindle his friendship (and hopefully more) with Dawn. Drawing her out of her shell is one step forward and two steps back at times, but Andrew is nursing his own misery. Will they ever get it together?
The focus of the book is the relationship between Dawn and Andrew. There’s not a great deal of focus on the medicine (good if you’re squeamish) but there was enough to make me happy. Australian readers might notice that some terms are more American (e.g. Emergency Room vs. Emergency Department vs. A&E) – I presume that’s to reach a wider audience. Flockton also does an excellent job of selling Perth to the reader (especially the café near the hospital – I want to know its name!) and the Margaret River region. I loved the instant familiarity of this book – so much so I know I’ll be looking for Andrew as I walk past ambulance bays for some time…
Emotions run high in this book – Dawn’s grief is dealt with in a careful, sensitive way as is the building of her relationship with Andrew. Andrew’s demons are a little more in the background, but the way he deals with things is in a completely different way to Dawn. It was interesting to compare the two.
Andrew is a great hero – he’s funny, sensitive with just a hint of sadness about him. I loved his determination to get to know Dawn again and his sensitivity – almost intuition – as to what Dawn was feeling. Dawn, due to the way she had walled herself off from life, is a little more difficult to get to know. Once you know her reasons for being the way she is, it’s a lot easier to understand her fear (although sometimes the way she would withdraw was frustrating!).
A sweet romance with a fantastic hero. Perhaps one day I’ll spy my Andrew washing down his ambulance…
Author Nicole Flockton has written another tender and sweet love story in her newest release, Rescuing Dawn, that captured my attention right from the beginning. I could not wait to read Dawn's journey as she tries to overcome the tragic loss of her husband and child to find love again with her high school sweetheart, Andrew. Their breakup was not good as Andrew walked away for the thrill of adventure, but now he's back as a paramedic and encounters Dawn as she works the Emergency Room. You can feel their connection as they slowly work their way back to each other. I liked how sweet and tender he treated her and did not rush Dawn into something she was not ready for. I enjoyed their playfulness as well as their honesty with one another. I love reunion stories and this one was beautifully written with poignant scenes that had me in tears as Dawn must say "good bye" to her child and husband so she can move forward with living again. I also loved seeing Alex and Sophie again and getting glimpses of their life together. This book made me happy and sad (in a good way) all at the same time thanks to the author and her beautifully written words and scenes. I would recommend this book to romance readers.
Rescuing Dawn provided me with a real life trauma situation. Dawn is an ER nurse who works the night shift. She works nights for a purpose, but for that purpose comes a tragic story. One that includes a drunk driver killing her Husband Tom and her 8 month old son Brody in a car accident. In a time before marriage there was Andrew. Her College Sweetheart. Andrew was a thrill seeker and after school for him he hit the open seas instead of starting a life with his , Dawn. Now fast forward 10 years later and we have a new situation. Dawn is the ER nurse on duty when the paramedics bring in a man. It wasn't the injured mam that stole Dawn's breath. It was the man on top of the man trying to do CPR to keep the injured man alive. Welcome home Andrew. Will Andrew wiggle his way back into Dawn's life just to shatter it once more with his adrenaline fixation? I highly recommend reading Rescuing Dawn as it made me realize that I too hide myself from life at times!
Dawn lost her husband and her son in an auto accident and she suffered the survivor's guilt that everyone experiences. After their death, Dawn contemplates suicidal. Then Andrew comes into her life, a high school sweetheart. Dawn experiences guilt that loving Andrew is not being loyal to her husband's and her son's memory. I could relate to this book. A decade ago, my husband died of liver cancer. I contemplated suicide after his death, not because I wanted to die, I wanted the constant pain to stop. I had to make a decision whether I wanted to live or die. When I met my current husband, I felt that I wasn't being loyal to my late husband. I thought this book dealt with surviving the death of a loved one honesty. I would recommend this book to everyone.
Nicole Flockton delivers again! Rescuing Dawn is beautiful as a stand-alone story, but even richer if you also read Masquerade. It was so fun revisiting Sophie and Alex and getting a hint of what's in store for Phoebe. Enough about Masquerade, though, Ms. Flockton's new release is a sexy but emotional reunion romance, but it's so much more than that. In Rescuing Dawn, we delve deeper into the events that led Dawn to submit herself to endless night shifts where she's an emergency room nurse. We find out why she closed herself off to love...and then we meet the one man who can draw her back out. Sweet, sexy, and persistent, Andrew is a blast from her past, back for good and ready to prove that he's the man for her. Rescuing Dawn combines a rich inner story, compelling and conflicted past, and the powerful love that can heal a heart.
In Rescuing Dawn by Nicole Flockton, Dawn Granger has been living a monotonous life for the past two years since her husband and baby’s death. She has kept away from all her family and friends saying that she is okay, but all she does is work, eat andsleep. She has no personal life beyond that, her life as a nurse defines her.
Andrew Holmes used to love to sail, to the point that he left his one true love in order to sail around the world competing. But after an accident where his best friend and another member of the crew died and while he was rescued has made him change his priorities now he is a paramedic and he lives to help save the lives of others. I wasn't that impressed with this book. Dawn kept living in the past so much that it kept hampering her from moving forward with Andrew. Andrew never pushed her on it either, instead choosing to keep secrets of his own. This was not a trusting relationship by any means, and yet they're exchanging "I love you"s that seem to be based on lust alone. It didn't ring true for me. I was mostly entertained throughout the story, and it wasn't all bad, but I felt it could be a lot more, especially if they had gone for a more emotional tack.
Another beautiful romance from Nicole Flockton. This sweet story of renewed love after tragedy is heartwarming and lovely. The relationship between the main characters is one of learning to trust again. The story was nicely written with a slow steady build up and a touch of steam. Just the way I like them.
This one had a little more to it than Masquerade, the first in the series. It was a quick and easy read. Nothing spectacular, but nothing really annoying.
