What poetry always should be.

I'm always excited to read local authors. Mona Fertig is from Salt Spring Island, a place I've always wanted to visit but haven't yet made the ferry trip. This book has greatly increased my desire to go.

This isn't just a book of poetry, it's art. Fertig was a professional publisher and it shows. I would have loved to see her work on the Van Isle Poetry Collective issues as I think those would have been more enjoyable with proper cohesion. I don't usually like pictures in poetry but Fertig's fit beautifully and complement the entire collection. I would love to see them in full colour!

There's a lot packed into this book. I was happy to see that most of the poems utilize all the page, not that it matters, but I did notice and appreciate it. She perfectly captures the island life, the nature, the beaches, the community. I loved it. I keep thinking about "Cougar Mornings" and my own encounters with cougars and bears. I liked how she formatted her poems. I liked her style and tone.

I wish this was the poetry we read in school, I would have found it more enjoyable and loved my island more.

The visual appeal in this book is huge. There's no tactile appeal, the paper isn't textured or rough, but I rarely get a poetry book with fancy paper. Make yourself a hot drink and read this outside or by a window. Better yet, bring it with you and read it on the Salt Spring ferry and enjoy everything she captures about island life.

Published by a Salt Spring publisher! Purchase this book, gift this book, or check your local library. It's worth it.

I'm not normally a poetry fan, but I am a Mona Fertig poetry fan. Happened upon this new gem in our local library, and it called out to me.
Perhaps it speaks so loudly to me because I've lived a life parallel to hers on this island in the Pacific, and I can easily envision all the places her words evoke. She perfectly captures the life of an islander; her words brushstrokes across each page, painting images of my daily life and all that surrounds me in this unique place.
