Trevor has started his first job at Ashton's Fresh Marketplace, where someone has been tampering with the food. Cayenne has been sprinkled on cookies, garlic put in coffee, and plastic insects hidden in fruit displays to terrify customers. Trevor and his friends Nick and Robyn decide to find out who is out to destroy the store's reputation. Is it Mattie, the disgruntled ex-employee? Or perhaps the competition? Or is it Alex, their schoolmate who doesn't know when a joke has gone too far? Their snooping makes the kids themselves seem suspicious, and soon they realize they have to solve the mystery before Trevor gets fired for a crime he didn't commit.

After reading the book "Tampered" by Michele Martin Bossley a golden line that stood out to me was the following quote, "thats no accident Robyn said. I'll bet anything someone switched these labels on purpose. That's not really tampering, is it?"(page 114) This quote stood out to me a golden line because its what made for a more mysterious feeling while also interesting me to read more and want to get to the bottom of the problem.

I haven’t read an Orca hi/lo book in a while and thought I would give this one a try. It’s interesting enough though the vocabulary is just so off at times. It just doesn’t feel like natural, genuine dialogue between teens. But it is short and an opportunity for a student struggling to find a book they can finish.

Grades 6 and up.

This is a compelling, easy-to-read story that should have reluctant readers eagerly turning pages to find out the resolution to the mystery.
