This is my first book of the series, but most definitely not my last. Jess is formidable, even if she doesn't know it or understand it yet. Most people, by the time that they turn 45 years old, feel as if they're stuck in their life. They can't do anything new, won't gain any new skills but Jess gets thrown into this new life because of newly awakened powers. She has only recently learned that she is a witch.
She's stubbornly passionate, which I relate to because I am the same way, and she doesn't let anything, or anyone hinder her once she makes up her mind about something. For her own good, she has been told many things to keep herself and her family safe. Finally, something happens in which there is no choice but that the truth must come out.
Instead of letting it hold her down or back, she uses it as motivation to do what she needs to do to keep her family safe from the clutches of a hypocritical and jealous inquisitor that has hated her family for years. How can she do what she needs to do when she just recently learned that she has powers, let alone learn how to use them?
I love her family. They might be a bit of a bag of mixed-up tricks, but I would take them in a heartbeat. They're loving and kind and supportive, if a little bit odd. Odd I can deal with. No family is perfect as well Jess knows but then she realizes that it doesn't matter about blood. Family is who loves you and you love in return. And I love that about this book. I had a great time reading. I will be reading the previous books in this series. I have enjoyed it immensely and I recommend them.
