Eager to read a political thriller series that once more has parallels to the present US situation, I turned to the final novel in this collection by Mikael Carlson. After the latest presidential election appears to put Senator Alicia Standish in the Oval Office, journalist Tierra Campos and FBI Special Agent Victoria Larsen know they have to stop it. Not because Standish is a horrible candidate, but due to the fact that a cabal has been pulling stings to ensure the senator is elected and will become the puppet to powerful outside sources. Primaries have been skewed, votes realigned, and people have had their reputations ruined. There is a core group and no one is the wiser as things shift in the blink of an eye. The last-ditch effort hopes to stop this by the time the Electoral College casts its formal votes to cement the results of the election. As Tierra works to use her journalistic contacts to subtly bring down the cabal, Special Agent Larsen works off the grid, as she is still seen as one who is implicated in all the nefarious acts. This is surely a game of chess, where every move has consequences and there is no room for error. The world is, as yet, unaware of the battle ensuing and it will take a master to ensure checkmate falls in the right camp. Mikael Carlson delivers a stunning conclusion to the series that had me hooked from the outset.

Mikael Carlson is an author whose political thrillers I have read before. He presents yet another foundation in this fifth and final novel in the series that engages the reader. The story presents that fallout of the climactic fourth novel that explored election night and the truths that came to pass. With this solid foundation, Mikael Carlson builds on it and takes a fork in the road to ponder how the situation might remedy itself. Pushing ideas that have built through the past books, the reader is led through many exciting happenings with no time to spare and perhaps some of Carlson’s musing about the actual American political situation. Short chapters propel the story forward in an effective way and there is no doubt the reader ought to keep reading for answers. Multiple perspectives through narrative eyes give the reader a full view of events from all sides, which adds to the reading enjoyment. Carlson has a way of pulling the reader in and refuses to let go, with such captivating storytelling. This series has proven this once more.

Characters are impactful as they set about creating their own backstories and development. Readers will know the likes of Tierra Campos and Victoria Larsen, but will likely enjoy seeing the protagonists tackle all the obstacles laid out before them. There are some supporting characters who return from past novels, playing their own roles to add depth to the series and the interactions on the page. Mikael Carlson does well to keep the reader involved with everyone, ensuring no wallflowers. Helping to guide the reader, these characters add a layer of intrigue for the series fan.

Surprises and political development are core in a thriller of this nature. This series has not fallen short on any account. Mikael Carlson has developed surprises and twists throughout the series, all of which come rushing out in this final novel. There are things that arise swiftly, as well as events that have been three books in the making, though Carlson gives both the same attention to detail. Political thrillers usually need something to keep things from being predictable and Carlson offers numerous crumbs to sate the reader into accepting the unexpected. There was so much that needed resolving and the surprises keep the reader guessing what awaits them with each turn of the page, something Carlson addressed blatantly and subtly throughout this piece. I am eager to read more of his work and have enjoyed other series. What’s next for my Mikael Carlson adventure, I am not yet sure!

Kudos, Mr. Carlson, for a great finale and a stellar series!

Hard to put down

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel about Tierra and Victoria taking on a subversive group planning to control the presidency. Their help comes from many unexpected places. Another thing that I loved about this book is that not only it action packed, but also gave a lot of the history of places where the people met in secret and in the open.
