'Understanding For Kids & Grown Ups' is a book about Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), from the perspective of a little boy called Ethan. Ethan shares his personal experiences with PDA, and how it affects his ability to handle certain demands and expectations. The book offers valuable insight and helpful tips for those who want to support individuals with PDA. It is hoped that readers will gain a deeper understanding of PDA, and encourage the world around these individuals to better support them.
The book does a good job of explaining about PDA with examples of how it can play out. I'm in the US where PDA isn't an official diagnosis, but it sounds so much like my 8yo. She read it and I think it helped her to understand and feel less alone. I can see this being especially beneficial in helping explain
Touching and real - a great read for friends and families of PDAers.
Thank you for writing this book. If you are a grandparent, friend, aunt/uncle of a PDAer, and you’re looking to learn and understand, this short story will help. The real life example of what going to the park with a well meaning family member can actually feel like is clear and real. For friends or family of a PDA family, this short story can help you understand and be part of the support PDA families (the kids, the moms, the dads, the sibs) need and deserve. It is a wonderful book!
Fantastic book for absolutely anyone to read, especially children with PDA, to see that they are not alone and that they are understood by some. Their feelings and actions are valued and recognised, and no, they are not naughty or badly behaved kids. Thank you for writing this - a must for school libraries and for anyone with PDA or suspecting they may have it.
This is a very helpful book that gives a basic understanding of what PDA is. It is especially necessary in the US, where it is not really recognized or commonly diagnosed. I also like that it helps kids to feel better about their diagnosis and explains their feelings, which they often cannot understand and control.
This was the book I didn’t know I needed. I knew my son had a PDA profile but I couldn’t get my husband to see it. I read the book and saw my little boy on every page. I asked my husband to read it, expecting him not to, just like all the other books he hasn’t read, but he did. I hope it’s sunk in.
Written for children, parents and carers of those with PDA. Brilliant illustrations and explanations throughout that explain PDA in a straightforward way.
This was a great read. Concise and clear. I appreciate the additional information in the back for adults. I already knew a fair bit about PDA but still learnt things from this book.
I loved how accurate this depiction of PDA is. I highly recommend it not only for the kiddos, but also adult family members who are still struggling to understand PDA.
