Rate this book
Long before Shadow was born, the Heartwood was a land of warring clans of elves. When human lord Sharl comes to build a great city near the forest and abducts Chyrie and her mate, Valann, to gain safe conduct through the forest, the elves learn that an even greater enemy is approaching -- an army of barbarians sweeping down from the north. Now the elves must make peace, not only with each other but with the hated humans, to unite against a threat that may destroy the city and the forest together.

I always loved this book and all the author's other stories. I wish she had written more books. Her characters are approachable and yet also wonderfully foreign. The land is just obscure enough to not be ours but also familiar enough to make it believable. I love her humor and her characterization.

Little paperback that was surprisingly full of good words. The oldietime sort of cheesy fantasy cover belies the quick-moving, well-written story within. In short I liked this story about elves.

As with the follow-up books in this series (after original 3 Shadow books), there are slight inconsistencies but still very enjoyable and definitely worth rereading again.

I was so excited to find out there we a book all about Chyrie. I loved this deeply beautiful prequel to one of my all time favorite books!

I read this on it's own in the 90s (unaware that it was part of a series, my mom had it lying around) and recalled it recently to re-read. After discovering the rest of the books I'm glad I did!

All of them are good (though some have lack luster endings) but this one is definitely my favorite, and I wish there was more about Chyrie and Valann because I loved their characters and just the atmosphere of the Heartwood in general - though I know now as it's a prequel that it was means to an end.
