Kiriti Roy is a famous Bengali Detective character created by Dr. Nihar Ranjan Gupta. This is the first book of massive seventeen volume collection of Kiriti Omnibus. This volume contains five novels and short stories.

About the author

Dr. Nihar Ranjan Gupta (Bangla: নীহাররঞ্জন গুপ্ত) was an Indian dermatologist and a popular Bengali novelist. He is the creator of the fictional detective character Kiriti Roy.

Gupta came from a prestigious Kabiraj family of Itna village under Lohagara police station, in the district of Jessore, presently in the Narail district of Bangladesh. During the Second World War, Gupta served as an army doctor and was posted in different parts of the world. He was posted in Chittagong, Burma and Egypt. After the war, he completed post-graduation in medicine from the United Kingdom, specializing in dermatology. On his return he joined the Calcutta Medical College. In his career as a physician he was associated with several hospitals in India. After the Partition, his family permanently migrated to Kolkata in 1947.

As a child Gupta always dreamed of becoming a writer. He once went to Shantiniketan to seek the blessings of Rabindranath Tagore and took his autograph. At the age of eighteen he composed his first novel, Rajkumar. During his stay in England he developed a keen interest in detective stories and met Agatha Christie. After coming back to India, he composed his first detective novel, Kalo Bhramar [কালো ভ্রমর] where his launched his detective character Kiriti Roy [কিরীটী রায়].

প্রথম গল্পটি অর্থাৎ 'কিরীটীর আবির্ভাব' গল্পটি কালো ভ্রমর বইয়ের একটি পর্ব, তাই এটা নিয়ে আলোচনায় গেলাম না।

বইয়ের দ্বিতীয় গল্প রহস্যভেদী। এই গল্পেও কিরীটীর গোয়েন্দাগিরির চাইতে ইন্সটিঙ্কটের পরিচয় দেখানো হয়। গল্পের শুরুতে যেহেতু বলে দেয়া হয়েছে সেই সময় কিরীটী পঞ্চম বার্ষিক শ্রেণীর ছাত্র, তাই এ ব্যাপারে খানিক ছাড় দেয়াই যায়।

বইয়ের তৃতীয় গল্প 'চক্রী' পড়তে গিয়ে একটা ধাক্কা খেলাম। হুবহু এমনই একটা গল্প তো এর আগেও আমি পড়েছি। গল্পের পুরো প্লট মাথায় থাকলেও গল্পের আর লেখকের নামটাই মনে নেই। কী মনে করে ফেসবুকে 'থ্রিলার পাঠকদের আসর' গ্রুপে একটা পোস্ট দিলাম। গ্রুপের বেশ কয়েকজন পাঠকের সহযোগীতায় জানতে পারলাম, এই গল্পটি প্রখ্যাত লেখিকা আগাথা ক্রিস্টির 'পেরিল এ্যাট এন্ড হাউজ' গল্পের এ্যাডপশন। তবে আমি এটিকে এ্যাডাপশন বলবো না, গল্পের চরিত্রগুলো আর স্থানের নাম পাল্টে দিলেই তাকে এ্যাডপশন বলা যায় না। তাছাড়া তিনি গল্পের কোথাও আগাথা ক্রিস্টির নাম উল্লেখ করেননি। এই পদ্ধতি আমার কাছে প্লেইন এ্যান্ড সিম্পল চুরি!

চতুর্থ গল্প 'বৌরাণীর বিল।' এখানেও কিরীটীর গোয়েন্দাগিরির কোনো নমুনা দেখতে পাই না। নীহার রঞ্জন গুপ্ত নিছক বাক্যালাপ দিয়ে সাধারণ গল্পকে টেনে অনেক বড় বানিয়েছেন। তারপর শেষে গিয়ে এমনি এক জটিল প্যাঁচের গিঁট ছাড়িয়েছেন, যার বিন্দুমাত্র আভাস পুরো গল্পে পাঠক পায়নি। জনাব কিরীটী তার সকল রহস্যভেদ মনে মনেই সারেন। গল্পের বিবরণে তার কিছুই লেখা থাকে না, পাঠকদেরও বোঝার জন্য কোনো সূত্র দেয়া হয় না। যাই হোক, এ ধরণের গোয়েন্দা গল্প হজম করাটা বেশ কঠিন (যদি সেটাকে আদতেই গোয়েন্দা গল্প বলা যায় আর কী)।

পঞ্চম এবং শেষ গল্প 'হাড়ের পাশা।' কিরীটী রাত জেগে থাকেন (অবশ্য প্রতি গল্পেই তার কাজই এই) এবং রাত্রি জাগরণের ফলে এটা সেটা দেখতে পান। কিরীটীর গোয়েন্দারগিরির একটা বিশাল অংশ জুড়ে রয়েছে অন্যদের অনুসরণ করা আর আড়ি পেতে এর তার কথা শোনা। আর এভাবেই দৈবক্রমে হোটেলে বসে তিনি ট্যাক্সির নাম্বার জানতে পারেন। সেই ট্যাক্সিকে অনুসরণ করেন এবং অপরাধীকে হাতেনাতে ধরে ফেলেন। এই হলো কিরীটীর বাহাদুরী।

** থ্রিলার পাঠকদের আসর থেকে আরও জানতে পারলাম, নীহার রঞ্জন গুপ্ত আগাথা ক্রিস্টির 'দ্য মার্ডার অফ রজার এ্যাক্রয়েড' গল্পটিও কপি মেরেছেন। জানি না, তিনি আরও কোন কোন বিদেশী গল্প থেকে কাহিনী জুড়ে গোয়েন্দাকাহিনী লেখার অপচেষ্টা চালিয়েছেন। তার লেখার ধরণ পড়ে মনে হয়নি, তিনি গোয়েন্দা গল্প লেখার যোগ্য।

Have you ever vehemently read a 608-page long book so that you can criticize the book with your heart’s content? I read Kiriti Somogro 1 with that sole purpose. Erase the memories of all detectives you have encountered so far, and then maybe you can go through this book.
Kiriti’s Method:
• Kiriti doesn’t sleep at night and even if he does, he wakes up to the seemingly inaudible sound. Then he follows the trail of that noise and finds clues.
• Lead or clue just fumble upon him, People start to give him their stories without him asking anything.
• Kiriti gives extremely long speeches and conducts open interrogations. The perpetrator seems to go along with that just fine.
• Kiriti’s opponents don’t carry guns or knives in most cases. They are nice enough to get beaten up by Jiu-Jitsu in a tiny compartment. All of his moves are named as, “কঠিন জুজুৎসুর প্যাচঁ”.
• People around him are imbeciles. They have zero common sense, intuition, and analytical ability. Whatever Kirity does, they are always dumbstruck

Niharranjan and his flaws:
• He has a “young widow getting pregnant by temptation and giving birth” fetish. Three out of eight stories had this trope.
• Getting influenced by writers is equivalent to copying to him.
o According to Goodreads reviews by Ahsanul Shovon, 'চক্রী' is the dupe of “Peril at end house” by Agatha Christie. His Wikipedia page cleared it up as well- “During his stay in England he developed a keen interest in detective stories and Agatha Christie”.
o “হাড়ের পাশা” has the similar premise of a Bomkesh story. As Sharadindu started writing before him, there is a slight chance of replication in this story too.

• Nihar ranjan includes long philosophical mumbo jumbo that has little to no effect on the story.
• His writing gave such significance that, I wouldn’t be upset if Kiriti gets taken out of the story.

বই পড়তে পড়তে মাকে প্রশ্ন করলাম,"মা গল্পের ভিলেন কেন কালোই হয় সবসময়?কেন যাদের নাক থেব্রা তারাই খুনি অপরাধী হয়?"মা বললেন সব বই "বই"না।এমন কোনো ভুল আর একরোখা কিছু থাকলে বইটা ছুড়ে ফেল!মায়ের কথায় অবাক হয়ে গিয়েছিলাম!পৃষ্ঠা উল্টে আবার এক নারী বিদ্বেষী উক্তি দেখে মেজাজ টা চড়েই গেল।তো 300 টাকার বইটা নিতান্তই একটা শো পিস হিসেবে থাকলো বুক সেলফ এ।

অত্যন্ত কুপাঠ্য এই বই পড়া সময় নষ্ট করারই সামিল। দুর্বল গল্পের গাঁথুনি, অগুনিত প্লটহোল, বিভ্রান্তিকর ক্যারেক্টার বিল্ডআপ কি নেই? বিরক্ত হবার সব রকম উপাদানে পরিপূর্ণ করে রেখেছেন লেখক। লেখকের ব্যক্তিগত নারী বিদ্বেষ আর হাই ক্লাস অবসেশন গল্পেও প্রতিফলিত হয়েছে।

বহুদিন আগে শুরু করে ফেলে রাখা বইটি অবশেষে শেষ করতে পারলাম। কিরীটীর ৫ টি গল্প আর উপন্যাস নিয়ে এই খন্ড, এর মধ্যে শেষ দুটি বিশেষ করে বৌরানীর বিল খুবই ভালো, বাকিগুলো গড়পড়তা বা তার চেয়েও কম। কালো ভ্রমর চরিত্রটির কথা অনেক জায়গায় পড়লেও কাল ভ্রমরকে নিয়ে লেখা বড় গল্প কিরীটীর আবির্ভাব বড় হতাশ করেছে। বোধহয় ব্যোমকেশের সমসাময়িক সেকালের জনপ্রিয় চরিত্র কিরীটী লম্বায় সাড়ে ছয় ফুট, গৌরবর্ণ, বেজায় সাহেবি তার চালচলন, টাকাপয়সারও অভাব নেই, গোয়েন্দাগিরি তার পেশা নয় বরং নেশা। অন্য মূল চরিত্রগুলোও হয় জমিদার নয় বড় ব্যবসায়ী বা উচ্চবিত্ত পরিবারের এবং প্রায় সবাই সাহেবি চালচলনে অভ্যস্ত, গড়পড়তা বাঙালি নয় মোটেও। কিরীটী রায় তেমনি ব্যোমকেস বক্সী বা ফেলুদার মতো পাশের বাড়ির মানুষ বা আপন নয় কেমন যেন‌ কষ্টকল্পিত, অবাস্তব। অনেক ক্ষেত্রে গল্পের প্লট দূর্বল, আবার কখনো প্লট ভালো কিন্তু লেখার স্টাইলের সাবলীলতার অভাব সেভাবে মনকে ছুঁয়ে যেতে পারে নি। যদিও এটি প্রথম খন্ড মাত্র, পরের গুলোতে লেখা আরও ভালো হতে পারে, আশা করি সেগুলো পড়ার সুযোগ হলে কিরীটী রায়ের রহস্যভেদ হয়তো আরও ভালো লাগবে।

Nothing much to say because I felt nothing but disappointment.
Kiritir Arbibhab and Rahosho Bhedi were good. But others were not so good because Harer Pasha and Bouranir Bil had a disgusting trope "young girl getting pregnant by temptation" wtf is that actually. " Bouranir Bil" was the most fucked one. I kinda skimmed the story 'chokri' because I didn't like the pacing of the story and it was boring.
