Myths of American Slavery is not a defense of slavery but instead a sincere attempt to defeat the spread of misinterpretations and misrepresentations that continue to bedevil race relations and contaminate Americas political landscape.
This is a really good book for expanding your understanding of the history of slavery in America. Hearing from actual historic sources helps develop a better understanding of the people and thought of the time. I didn't know about the South's history of abolitionism till seeing this book. The South, when you read this and other books, isn't the cartoon villain you hear about at school or in the media.
There are many myths that have been promulgated throughout the years about American slavery, not only its nature, but its participants, and the war that subsequently brought it to an end. Many people who study this issue get a bit uncomfortable when they realize that the War Between the States and slavery itself was a lot more complicated then folks tend to believe...and why wouldn't these issues be complicated, history itself is complex. I recommend!
Simple, sensible and concise. Easy to understand. Even those with minimal understanding of history should be able to grasp the principle points of the author.
A good read for lovers of the South and of U.S. history. The book has many interesting facts and figures to help show there's two sides to every story. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants straight information on such a sensitive subject.
